matteodepalo··on JavaScript Disabled: Should I Care?
To be fair here's the opposite view: http://tomdale.net/2013/09/progressive-enhancement-is-dead/
matteodepalo··on No more `grunt watch` – faster builds with the Broccoli asset pipeline
I'm happy to see this reach beta version, it's a great step in the right direction. Grunt is too generic as a tool and we've all seen Gruntfiles reach enormous lengths, to a point when it's really hard to figure out what is processing what.

One thing that has room for improvement though is the syntax, which in my opinion doesn't reveal the intention behind some methods and is a bit too coupled with the implementation. What does `makeTree('lib')` mean? If it's taking a folder and its files then why not rename it to something like `broccoli.requireFolder('lib')`? Also another thing that might improve usability would be chaining compilers instead of calling them directly with the tree as parameter.

These are just minor things anyway, I'm sure the library will improve over time. Congrats joliss, great fan of your work!

matteodepalo··on Ghost Launches to The Public
Wow I didn't know that, thank you!
matteodepalo··on Ghost Launches to The Public
I really like the idea of having images for popular hosting providers like Digital Ocean and Rackspace; this should lower the entry level difficulty tremendously. I wish Discourse would do something similar, as I believe it would spread the adoption very quickly.
matteodepalo··on Yahoo's new killer app
I feel like this privacy issue only compels a small group of individuals to find alternatives to email. A project like this would be never adopted by the masses, simply because the cost of switching is too high and the immediate return is too low.
matteodepalo··on Enough with the JavaScript already
Just because it's badly abused doesn't mean it's bad per se. Let's say you build your SOA: JSON API + Mobile App. At this point, if you plan to build a web app to browse your content, it's very hard to render pages server side without code duplication/collision with the API. If you go with the full js MVC approach you can reuse your api and just worry about the templating and event binding. Maybe this approach doesn't yet scale to the size of Twitter, but I hope the web moves towards fat clients optimization.
matteodepalo··on Nginx for Developers: An Introduction
Awesome! If you like to go a bit further I suggest learning Chef in order to automate this kind of tasks. I wrote a tutorial about it: http://matteodepalo.github.io/blog/2013/03/07/how-i-migrated...
matteodepalo··on People with nothing to hide
One thing is leaking the fact that there is a program, another to leak all the data.
matteodepalo··on People with nothing to hide
> Imagine some crazy, hard-line politicians get elected and make a law that retroactively throws to jail women who get abortions. Or homosexuals. Or maybe it's a party that decides the 1% is due for some rich-shaming, who knows.

There are 2 possibilities here: 1) Democracy failed hard allowing MANY crazy people to get power without people allowing it. 2) The majority of people actually want those things and they vote for a candidate that will do them. If that's not ok for you (it isn't for me too) then you are questioning democracy itself.

Both are things that are not going to happen. If they will, I'll just leave my country of residence.

> Not to mention bullshit non-crimes like smoking pot, drug consumption, or possession of child pornography.

Dura lex sed lex. There is nothing you can do here, except for voting for candidates that promise to remove these laws. Until their election, if you think you're above a single law, then you entitle yourself to be above ANY law. If this argument was to be applied by everyone our society would descend into chaos.

matteodepalo··on People with nothing to hide
I don't have nothing to hide from the government. This doesn't mean everyone I know should know everything about me. I am just a number for people collecting information about me, whereas for YOU or anyone in my social circle, certain kind of information can change my reputation and the way I'm seen by my peers forever. Stop equating "the government is doing statistics about people and keeping that information confidential" with "everyone should know everything about anyone". If you think the problem is that the government could leak that information, anyone that is currently handling your data (e.g. Google) could.
matteodepalo··on Stellar Wind (code name)
"I've got nothing to hide" isn't the only argument that is used to counter privacy advocates, and I agree that this argument is wrong to some extent. A more valid argument might be that when I think of government agencies looking at data from Google I know I'm just a number, unless they want to investigate, in which case they may look at my personal info. But I have to guess the number of investigated people is pretty low and there must be valid reasons to start an investigation, just like they need a warrant to get inside a house. It would simply be impossible to investigate every one of us in detail.
matteodepalo··on Pure: a set of small, responsive CSS modules
Very good job, I love the minimal flat design.

Unfortunately, since it doesn't use any css preprocessor, it is impossible to create a semantic stylesheet. Now-days I would not consider any css framework that doesn't let me separate the presentation layer from the markup.

I realize this is meant to be a very lightweight framework, but in order to be usable it has to have the possibility to be extended easily without spawning classes everywhere.

matteodepalo··on Jony Ive’s new look for iOS 7: black, white, and flat all over
Am I the only one kind of loving that retro look?
matteodepalo··on Flat design, yada yada. Here's what I need from iOS 7 as a developer
The problem with push notifications is that they drain a lot of battery. I enabled push notifications only for the applications that I really care about, like Mailbox or Facebook Messages. I just don't want other trivial applications to drain my battery.
matteodepalo··on GeoGuessr: Guess the location from Google street view
This game is addicting! http://www.geoguessr.com?v=eyJ0b3RhbFBvaW50cyI6MTUxMzMsInZlc... (15133 points)

I have to admit I found "Antibes" written on one of the posters and got 6k points just for one guess.

matteodepalo··on On Being A Designer And A Developer: Not Quite Unicorn Rare
I believe the biggest issue we developers face is that we cannot wrap our heads around what makes good design good. We look at a web page and think "wow this is beautiful and clean", but when we have to create our own, our mind blanks out. What we fail to see is that design is made out of patterns, just like programming. The problem is we cannot name those patterns.

I strongly recommend the reading of The Non Designer's Design Book[1]. It does a good job of explaining the basic principles of design (Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity) and constitutes a good start for those like me who have no prior formal education in design and want to learn how dissect a web page in its parts.

matteodepalo··on Ask HN: Why you do open source?
To build a common strong knowledge. The thought that people are solving a problem I've already solved disturbs me. It's also true vice versa.
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
There is a limited amount of workers you can run with 512mb of memory (max 3 for my application) and the random routing can overload one dyno while the others are doing nothing. Basically you have to scale and pay more when with Digital Ocean I can buy a 2gb machine and run 10 workers spending 20$ per month.
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
On Heroku I was using thin that forced me to scale horizontally to handle more than one request at the same time. With this setup I can set a number of unicorn workers bigger than 1 and I'm done. I can scale vertically until I can and then set up more machines with the same methodology and use a load balancer like HAProxy to manage requests.
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
Author here, I updated the article; now a user called "deployer" runs the app. Turns out it was easier now than when I started with the migration.
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
Thanks, I'll try it as soon as I can :-)
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
I've tried their service a few weeks ago, but they had a problem related to my particular Gemfile so I abandoned it for the moment. Their product is great and I'm sure they will iron out these small bugs, but for now it's not a valid option for me.
matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
First of all I didn't know whether to provision my machine with root or not. Scraping through sysadmin resources I found people installing Ruby with the "deployer" user and people using root for that task. When I tried installing Ruby with deployer I got many permission errors, but I realize that was caused in large part by my lack of experience with sysadministration.

Also, running processes with runit as non-root requires extra [care][1] and I just wanted to get everything up and improve my scripts AFTER I knew that my setup was viable.

Edit

One more thing: I couldn't install ruby-shadow, which is needed to handle passwords with chef, due to some errors with the version of ruby I had.

matteodepalo··on How I migrated from Heroku to Digital Ocean with Chef and Capistrano
I totally agree and it's next in the list of improvements I want to do. I just wanted to share this asap until it's fresh in my mind.

Edit

Done! :-)

matteodepalo··on Zurb Launches Foundation 4
My experience with Foundation has been great. The only thing I really didn't like was the markup full of classes a la bootstrap, and now they've fixed it! There has never been a better time for the semantic web.
matteodepalo··on Ask HN: How do you consider the current social web trend among startups?
Sharing something beautiful you did will always be a need. I am talking about serial, massive sharing. Every share is the same. All the food pictures on Instagram, all the places at the beach on Foursquare are shared mostly to brag.

When there were no smartphones, people went to concerts and enjoyed them, now everyone is pointing up their phones taking videos or pictures. How much time will it take before people realize it's better to enjoy the concert instead of streaming their lives constantly?

matteodepalo··on Ask HN: How do you consider the current social web trend among startups?
I agree it may be in its infancy but so many of the startups I see (among the ones that fail too) are all about sharing and nothing else. A joke that turned into viable idea[1] is emblematic. Foursquare started like you say, but I'd say it's not used by the majority of people to meet with friends. Instagram pivoted to follow themselves this trend. It doesn't answer to a need of the founder so it is not an organic startup if you consider pg's definition "those [startups ideas] that grow organically out of your own life"

I am not arguing that sharing is not popular. I am saying that it's and ephemeral trend.

matteodepalo··on Play framework 2.10 released
This is awesome news. With this release Play has reached a level of maturity and elegance that will definitely make me consider it for my future projects.
matteodepalo··on The Useless Web
Awesome, but it misses the epic http://nooooooooooooooo.com/
matteodepalo··on How to Get Startup Ideas
I tend to feel this way as well about clones, however your example IMHO doesn't really catch the problem. If the Italian restaurant is very good and aimed at a selective audience it can win against a big brand that aims at everyone. Of course they can only win if they don't try to clone an Olive Garden. The problem here is not making something small to beat a giant competitor, it's to build something exactly like a service you know to be very very good for the purpose of having it now. Indiegogo is a good example for this; they are like Kickstarter and offer a very good service to Europe. Considering Kickstarted wont be here for a long time I think they caught a good opportunity.
