"If we're going to meet at noon, the sun should be straight over head, damnit." Absolutely.

Pleorma is easier to install and less resource-hungry, so the bar for setting up an instance is lower.
mattbk1··on Lemmy Release v0.14.0: Federation with Mastodon and Pleroma
An instance of Lemmy is free to federate (or not) with other instances on the Fediverse. Each instance can have its own code of conduct. Seems good for everyone.

Please don't joke about suicide.
mattbk1··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
I understand your pain. Even simple things like moving posts from one channel to another aren't possible for an admin to do in Slack, although this has been basic forum functionality since...ever?

What do you see as the "huge tech cost and barrier of entry of mastodon"?
mattbk1··on Companies should probably pay $2k per person for open source (2017)
When Gratipay existed, they didn't take a cut (financial transaction fees were covered by donor or recipient). They survived on dogfooding[1]. Liberapay operates the same way.

Glad to see you're still around!

It also includes the ability to sponsor through Liberapay, the remaining Gratipay fork.
mattbk1··on Companies should probably pay $2k per person for open source (2017)
There was a lot of pivoting going on near the end, unfortunately. The "companies pay" version of the site wasn't around for very long.

StreetComplete is a great Android app to help update OSM data by asking you questions while you're out walking around. So rather than drawing new features, you're just saying "yes, this is a house/no, there is no wheelchair ramp here/the building number here is 1234" etc.
mattbk1··on Apps Getting Worse
In a perfect world, all of those would work in an RSS reader.

I would add that Joplin is great because it's plain text. People keep trying to shove OneNote at us at work and all I want is one text box per note, that doesn't move around when I try to edit it.
mattbk1··on Scientist says cleaning indoor air could make us healthier and smarter
This is the big thing hidden behind all projects (renewables, capture, efficiency upgrades) that claim "this is the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road." Think of the savings for health and the environment if we just spent the money trying to get an actual 60,000 cars off the road in the first place.

I think the word "option" probably needs to be emphasized more here. My workplace is moving toward hybrid, which allows this option. > That won't be for everyone. But there might be a sizeable enough cohort that performs better in the office that it'll be a good option for some companies.
mattbk1··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
This source suggests that geological methane emissions are about 40% of total emissions: https://phys.org/news/2021-03-natural-geological-methane-emi...

Oil and gas seeps notwithstanding, the vast majority of reservoirs are stable and likely to remain so over human timescales unless we stick wells into them and start piping fluids around on the surface.

mattbk1··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
"Anyway" from what reference point? The gas stayed in the ground for millions of years before we poked a bunch of wells into the reservoir. If the wells are shut in correctly, they shouldn't leak appreciably. As the comment above notes, the more pipes you have, the more gas is going to leak.

Unfortunately, in many places you can't produce oil without producing gas, and with so much gas right now, there's not a lot of financial incentive to capture it all. If we reduce the need for oil, we'll reduce gas leak emissions as well.

I was pushed into it because they needed a supervisor in that position. I might be a decent leader from a technical standpoint, but not a good manager after a year into it.
mattbk1··on Bats and the Origin of Outbreaks
Bats eat mosquitos, which can carry other diseases. Whether yo u see any value in the species doesn't really have a bearing on protecting biodiversity.
