Thank you. I must stop scoffing at others on HN when they don't get what I consider to be obvious jokes, as it seems I too am capable of missing obvious humor.
matt-attack··on Harvesting electricity from high-voltage transmission lines using fences
Copying files is absolutely not stealing since it doesn’t remove something from the owner. Stealing is conventional bad not because the thief acquires something, but because the original owner is deprived of something. I’d be pissed if someone stole cash from me even if they burn it. It’s not that they now have my property, it’s that I * no longer have* my property that’s the issue.

In the case of piracy, the original owner still has their property. So I’m sorry but “theft” is simply the wrong word. The original owner is not deprived of their data.

In the case of the fence however, the original owner is indeed deprived of some modicum of energy. The energy is indeed *taken*, or removed from the original owner. Thus I do consider this “theft”. It’s also true that it’s a trivial amount.

matt-attack··on One-Pedal Driving Explained
The concept of one pedal driving should be entirely divorced from the concept of regen. It’s purely a UI choice.

One could just as easily (ok it’d be slightly harder) design a system that behaves just like a traditional ICE vehicle while still regenerating the exact same amount of energy.

Any argument for one pedal driving should be centered solely in the UI benefits (less foot movement, etc.) rather than even mentioning regen.

Might have been so obvious it need not have even been mentioned. Just like today, you wouldn’t say “I’m really looking for a healthy woman with an unmutilated face”.

My uncle used to tell stories about death when he was growing up (30s or 40s). A line he would use always sticks either me, “back then, when you got sick, you died.”

He would go on to say just how common it was to know a child or adult that died. It was just a normal part of existence.

Who’s weak and who’s strong in this scenario: a bloody body is presented following a tragic car accident. The body is maimed, broken, but ultimately salvageable.

One person sees the body and shrieks in horror and goes into a fit of panic.

Another (an ER doctor) is cool as a cucumber from years of desensitization, calmly treats and saves the body.

I’d have a hard time describing the ER doctor as “weaker”. They’re unquestionable more capable and useful. And I propose stronger not weaker.

matt-attack··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
My biggest beef with EV buyers is their obsession with range, and their complete and utter disregard for efficiency. Why do we obsess over fuel economy for our ICE cars but have zero awareness of what the equivalent figures are for the various EVs.

Imagine 2 seemingly environmentally conscious buyers debating between a Corolla and a Hummer:

"How far can the Corolla go on a tank? 325mi. OK, well how far can the Hummer go? Well it's got the extended safari tank, so it can go 500mi. Got it, so obviously I'm going to get the Hummer."

No ICE buyers who have any concern for the environment would ever compare two ICE cars using only the total range figure, and completely disregard the MPG. In fact it's the complete opposite. Most would consider the Hummer absurd solely due to its atrocious fuel economy.

Similarly, these same people will say things like:

"Be sure to turn off the lights when you leave a room"

"I changed out my LEDs because they're so much more efficient than those old incandescents"

So why are they so obsessed with saving electricity in that context, but never even begin to think about the equivalent value for, say, a Tesla Y vs. a Rivian? In fact a Rivian has the same "green cred" to most buyers as does a Model 3. Yet the same person would chastise someone for running incandescent bulbs or for leaving the lights on when you leave the house.

I'm certain that the difference in electrical energy usage between a month of driving a Rivian vs say a Model 3 overshadows a year of using LEDs bulbs in your house vs incandescents. Yet no one even thinks about it.

People are incredibly illogical when it comes to EVs.

matt-attack··on Veritasium: The SAT Question Everyone Got Wrong [video]
The way I think of it, is if the outer circle is just sliding with friction such that the same point of the little circle is in contact with the big circle, it would undergo a single full rotation. Or is you slid a box along the surface of the drum, it would naturally undergo a single rotation. So then when add in the "rolling", you get the 3.
matt-attack··on Instant Noodles Took over the World
Right. I never understood this. Do people drink all the broth? I would always just eat the noodles and dump the broth. Figured I’m only getting a fraction of the seasoning that way.
matt-attack··on Particle Life
A general question by those that support ideas like Intelligent Design seem to focus on the notion of order from randomness. Specifically the natural intuition is that the vast amount of order associated with life could never arise on its own from just randomness. It's encouraging to be able to so quickly demonstrate that in fact order can emerge from chaos. Even if the organelles or molecules or whatever you might consider them in these simulations don't map specifically to organelles or molecules or cells in our world, the general concept is important to understand.

But isn’t that precisely the distinction between rotation and revolution already provides? When I first read it I thought, well they used the word revolution so clearly the answer is 1. If they had stated “rotations” then the answer is obviously 4.

It’s pretty ridiculous they couldn’t use the right word when the distinction was taught back it elementary school during the discussion of the motion of the earth.

matt-attack··on Volkswagen, Porsche, and Audi say they will use Tesla's EV charging plug
EVs could potentially handle that scenario even better than how it works with ICE cars. With ICE there’s always the error associated with how much gas was in the car to start as well as how much should you fill up when returning it. (Yes I know it’s customary to always just return a friend’s car filled to 100% regardless of the original tank state).

Nonetheless with an EV you could just hit a button saying “friend has taken possession” or “loaner mode” similar to valet mode. Upon returning the car and disabling that mode the car could present you with an accurate dollar amount of exactly what to pay your friend.

It’s funny that no one dares examine the true root cause. In my opinion it will never go away until we face the hard facts and recognize what was going on in this man’s head. It’s very convenient and easy to dismiss him as pure evil, or a psychopath, or the like. And attempt to try to see him as anything other than that is met with shock and horror and is generally just unacceptable as it gives the impression of sympathizing with him.

Do we honestly think he’s pure evil and relishes in seeing his victim’s pain and suffering? Does he completely lack any form of empathy or caring and is he totally numb to the effects of his crimes? Is he a sociopath? A psychopath?

I highly doubt it.

matt-attack··on Raiders of the Lost Ark Story Conference (1978)
If you listen to the whole thing, I think it becomes pretty obvious why they record it. They're just constantly riffing ideas, constantly. Then this will happen, no then this, yeah and then this, etc etc.

I would never trust a normal assistant to "keep notes" that are usable for something like this. A recording would seem to be mandatory in order to revisit ideas.

Writers make fiction. Anyone who tried to read anything into the actual writer is completely missing the point.

Imagine accusing the author of Silence of the Lambs of “secretly being a cannibal”. It’s truly idiotic.
