matsur··on Making Postgres Bloom
Semi-related in the land of Postgres and probabilistic data structures -- Redshift supports APPROXIMATE COUNT. Much, much faster than a raw COUNT, and their stated error is +-2%

http://docs.aws.amazon.com/redshift/latest/dg/r_COUNT.html

matsur··on SQLite Release 3.8.11.1
Building and linking your own sqlite.c is completely feasible. (We do it).
matsur··on Introducing Raspberry Pi B+
I don't believe there is an ADC on the board -- adding an input would have added a bit of cost.
matsur··on Mac keyboard shortcuts
Command-Shift-G in the save dialog or in a Finder window brings up a "Go to folder" prompt that allows text input of a path _with tab completion_.

As an aside, these posts remind me of macosxhints.com of years past.

matsur··on How to Swap Out a Time Warner Modem With Your Own Faster One
I was able to reactivate with the same device.
matsur··on How to Swap Out a Time Warner Modem With Your Own Faster One
Comcast fleeces you on the rental fee. However, if you cancel your modem rental but refuse to return their device, they charge you just $53 for it. Easily the lowest friction way into rolling from renting into owning your own modem.
matsur··on The Hacker Who Cracked the Code in Iron Man and The Social Network
The Social Network paid particular attention to this, to the point that they tracked down[0] the actual slides[1] Zuckerberg would have seen in his Harvard OS class for the scene in the classroom.

matsur··on Colorado Stores Throw Open Their Doors to Pot Buyers
http://uptontea.com is somewhere in between and has not disappointed the few times I've ordered from them.
matsur··on OpenSkyscraper – an open-source clone (in progress) of SimTower
Not if he doesn't supply the exe...
matsur··on NASA Chooses Musk’s SpaceX to Negotiate Launch Pad Lease
Calling Musk a founder of Tesla is stretching the word a bit... "Tesla Motors was incorporated in July, 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who financed the company until the Series A round of funding. Elon Musk led the Series A round of investment in February, 2004, joining Tesla's Board of Directors as its Chairman."[0]

matsur··on Schoolchildren ordered indoors as air pollution cloaks Shanghai
Beijing sits in a geographic bowl (trapping pollution) and is inland from the coast compared to Shanghai. It also gets hit with dust storms from the desert to its west, all of which lead to it being "crazy bad"[0] in relation to Shanghai.

re: "crazy bad" being tweeted by the US Embassy in Beijing -- a cautionary tale on string sanitization. "The "crazy bad" terminology – which was at odds with the normally sober and scientific language of the Twitter account – appeared to have been a joke embedded in the embassy's monitoring program and triggered by a reading that was off the normal scale."

matsur··on Presto: Interacting with petabytes of data at Facebook
Would also be curious to see how the execution model and language relates to/differs from Microsoft Dryad[0]/SCOPE[1].

matsur··on Show HN: Mortality Rates in the US Visualized
Suspicious in relation to what? Deaths per 100,000 is a relative measure and wouldn't be higher just because CA's population is large.
matsur··on RSA warns developers not to use RSA products
It's a backdoor. The original paper describing the hole is (hopefully) entitled "On the Possibility of a Back Door in the NIST SP800-90 Dual Ec Prng"[0]. It's no longer a "possibility".

matsur··on Worries That Microsoft Is Too Tricky to Manage
Nope. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/
matsur··on PhpMyAdmin Turns 15
SSH tunneling from your desktop to your MySQL host and connecting you admin client through that should alleviate the concerns around exposing 3306 to the world.
matsur··on Worries That Microsoft Is Too Tricky to Manage
Exchange is in the Office division.
matsur··on Boarding Pass Redesign
The labels are not parallel [0].

Something like ("Your flight" and "Your name") OR ("Flight number" and "Passenger Name") would be more grammatically consistent.

matsur··on Poll: Full-time software engineers in the Bay Area, what's your annual salary?
Just looking at Microsoft/Amazon/Google salaries in Puget Sound, they are in the same ballpark as the results of this poll.

Another difference: WA state has no state income tax.

matsur··on What Happens to Stolen Bicycles?
This has been implemented in Madison, WI and is supposedly effective.

matsur··on Introducing Outlook.com - Modern Email for the Next Billion Mailboxes
Outlook 2013 supports EAS.
matsur··on Thanks HN
You _can_ just walk into the library at the University of Wisconsin. There is only one library on the Madison campus (Memorial Library) that requires an ID to enter. That leaves 49 other libraries on campus open to anyone.
matsur··on Unix v6 Ported to ANSI C
Another set of excellent free OS lecture notes here: http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/Classes/537/Fall2011/

The lectures themselves are not xv6 specific, although the projects are xv6 based.

matsur··on Mac OS X Lion accepts any password when authenticating via LDAP
Your use of the word "only" here is misplaced. This is a very serious security issue that affects clients connecting to OpenLDAP.
matsur··on Introducing Prompt. Nice SSH for iOS.
Terminal (at least as of 10.6) allows you to select-to-copy/middle click paste within the same Terminal window. Not full blown support, but at least it's something.
matsur··on Full Text RSS Feed: Get the whole feed and nothing but the feed
This may be common knowledge, but all gawker blogs are available in full feed, ad free form at <gawker entity>.com/vip.xml

i.e. http://lifehacker.com/vip.xml

matsur··on Why does Adobe Reader need so many updates?
I actually view Chrome's PDF plugin as a complete abomination (at least on the Mac), and go out of my way to nuke it. It's slow, and there is _no_ easy way to open the PDF displayed in a PDF handling app (i.e. Preview) without resorting to copy and pasting the URL into wget.
matsur··on Brutal New York - 1965/95
While fiscal issues and a good dose of gov't ineptitude are obvious, I see nothing pointing to a fall back into the abyss NYC was in ~20 yrs ago. What do you think has changed in the past 3 years that leads you to this conclusion? The gentrification of Brooklyn?
