mathnode··on PostgreSQL 10 Released
MariaDB is a great choice over mysql, any day.

MariaDB compared to postgres is a difficult choice, both have a multitude of features. MariaDB 10 was a game changer for the mysql landscape.

To make postgres 10 as easy to scale as mariadb 10, and for query semantics in mariadb 10 to allow for the complexity that postgres 10 allows; both require tradeoffs in management tooling, development practices and understanding.

Neither of them are a silver bullet. They both require effort, like any RDBMS. But both are great choices.

People don't seem to undetstand this.

DirectX, PSGL, NVNAPI, and Metal are already available where Vulkan will probably never be.

Oh! I see DrRacket is open in that screen recording.

Is there any public information on using Racket with oculus yet?

mathnode··on Sublime Text 3.0
I moved from Vim to ST around 2012, I missed the textmate hype, and never looked back.

Since then it has been my main editor, cross platform for php, then python, then ruby, to java (...yup), and now clojure and racket. And of course all the SQL, shell scripts, and config file munging in between.

Maybe one day I will learn emacs, but for the meantime I am happy and productive.

mathnode··on Why favor PostgreSQL over MariaDB/MySQL?
In MariaDB 10.2 and MySQL 5.7 and above, this wouldn't happen. It's FUD. The sql_mode, and mysql/mariadb version is not specified.

This seems purposefully contrived; just another developer who throws their toys out of the pram, because they don't read the documentation and just expect software to work for them.

If anything the author has done nothing more than demonstrate ignorance, malice, or both.

When choosing a database, of any kind, you are choosing where to store precious data! Read the fine manual! MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and even the likes of MongoDB offer so many diverse options and storage formats and retrieval options.

mathnode··on Ask HN: What language-agnostic programming books should I read?
- The Pragmatic Programmer

- The Practice of Programming

- The Mythical Man Month

- The Cathedral and the Bazaar

- The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

- Introduction to Algorithms

- Hackers and Painters

Some of these do contain mixed language code examples, but they are expressed in a way to be agnostic. A problem is a problem; in any language.

diff doesn't need a landing page, unnecessary text, images, and logos to be loaded.

The interface has too much friction for the user. Even WITH all the extra gumpf, scrolling and clicking I still have no idea what this is for.

mathnode··on Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API
I agree it's not free. But will you make return on the effort/time/money invested?

EDIT: Do you think debugging vulan/opengl is free? Software houses like valve have had to make their own tooling to debug and optimise for vulkan and opengl.

mathnode··on Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API
It's a bet you would win. And not just for Graphic api's but asset API's.

Some engines like idtech4 (mb/ma, lwo) and anvil (max) directly use the asset formats which are created by an artsists desired application, not collada or fbx.

mathnode··on Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API
API's are not lock-ins. They are API's.
mathnode··on Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API
The reality is, in house tooling and engines do use multiple graphics api's, and that's perfectly fine. They are not slapdash implementations; professional graphics rendering programmers know and use these API's (See the GPU Pro book series, and Real Time Rendering), it's their profession.

A commercially successful multi-platform game like skyrim, use at least 4 API's (DirectX, NVN, PSGL, and DirectX), but no OpenGL or Vulkan to be seen at all.

Anvil and Frostbite have no existing opengl driven software titles. And that's perfectly fine.

mathnode··on Vulkan and OpenCL will merge into a single API
Metal has been out and working for two years. And working well.

Apple have a graphics API. Microsoft have a graphics API. Sony have a graphics API. Nvidia have their own libraries and compilers and so do AMD.

Exactly this. When ever anything comes to tender, out of the usual three on the table, the cheapest will always be chosen.

And because departments are left to their own devices, they solve all their problems with shared drives and excel sheets.

mathnode··on European Investment Bank announces €25M funding for MariaDB
Lots of RBDMS's have their issues or drawbacks, none like Oracle DB. The only RDBMS where you actually have to throw cash at it to solve a problem like scale or backups.

The Oracle RDBMS is absolutely terrible. You'd have to be absolutely mad to use it, even if it was free. In all my years I have never met anyone ever that chose it for it's technical merit, especially from people whom have knowledge of more than one RDBMS. Whatever it's got, another RDBMS's do it properly, and (usually) for a lot less money.

Pick a feature, any feature they advertise and will most likely be from a product they acquired, or half-arsed themselves.

I am not at all convinced any oracle engineer knows about fsync().

EDIT: PL/SQL is not a feature. It's a punishment.

mathnode··on European Investment Bank announces €25M funding for MariaDB
Good for mariadb and a good eye opener for any EU government system that is stuck on oracle.

Mariadb 10.3 is going to be a haven (or rehab) for oracle veterans.

mathnode··on PyCharm Edu: Python IDE to Learn Programming Quickly and Efficiently
From the FAQ:

Q: "How does PyCharm Edu differ from PyCharm Professional Edition or PyCharm Community Edition?"

A: "PyCharm Edu is based on the Community Edition and comprises all of its functionality. Additionally, it installs and detects Python during installation. It has a simpler UI (adjustable in settings) and adds a new "Educational" project type.

PyCharm Professional Edition additionally supports different web development technologies, has remote development capabilities and additional languages, and supports working with databases."

mathnode··on Why I left Mac for Windows: Apple has given up
The UI is a mess of old and new in Windows 10. Generally "advanced" options means switching to and old menu style (win 7 and older).

mathnode··on Razer targets perfect Linux support
I am one of many disgruntled Razer Blade Stealth and razer core owners, currently awaiting a refund. Some customers are on as many as their 4th or 5th replacement unit. They have no English support in the UK, just a couple of german phone numbers which nobody seems to answer. The forum is terrible and they can't translate emails correctly. It's insulting.

The typical issues are usually related to firmware, which myself and other users would be willing to wait for to be fixed, but Razer's default, almost auto-response, solution is to just send you another unit, with the same issues.

In general though, the razer blade stealth is not even in the same league as an x1, mbp, or xps, and it's not supposed to be. It's just priced the same.

Razer. Apple prices, gateway support.
