mathnmusic··on Rails 8.0 Released
There is a lot to like here. It can be a nice stack when combined with async/falcon and viewcomponents, at least where you don't need a lot of client-side state and browser API usage (canvas/usermedia etc) where javascript-first is a better approach, or a lot of number crunching, for which Python is better.

AFAIK, Apple took away those slots when Mac minis transitioned to Apple silicon. Attempts to replace SSD with re-soldering have not been successful.

It does not have access to the Excel app. You may be able to generate the .xlsx file using python libraries but you would need to run the python code on your own. ChatGPT can run generated code, which is probably why it works there.

Strict hierarchies are indeed too rigid. What about using a tag-based file manager like TagSpaces (which is free and open-source)?

Try dropping him in one of these math discord groups (for eg: Summer of Math Exposition)? Teens care a lot about social approval and seeing so many people having fun with math might help.

Corporations did that, not humans.

No, "silver medal" is defined as a range of points to be earned in the allotted time (4.5 hours for both papers of 3 problems each).

mathnmusic··on Local First, Forever
One improvement of the first "super-naive" approach is to break down the state into a whole hierarchy of files, rather than a single file. This helps reduce (but not eliminate) conflicts when multiple clients are making changes to different parts of the state.

Thanks for building this as open-source!

How is it different from CSVFiddle (which is also based on DuckDB-wasm, I think)? Ability to have multiple tables loaded and running join queries against them would be crucial.

mathnmusic··on Support open source that you use by paying the maintainers to talk to your team
At polyglot.network, we have been taking a much more direct approach: Hire us, and we work like a typical agency on open issues that you care about. It's in our best interest to work with upstream maintainers, but if for whatever reason, that's not practical, we work with either remote freelancers or in-house developers to get the job done. In the end, we solve the actual problems you have, in a sustainable way.

mathnmusic··on CyberChef – The Cyber Swiss Army Knife
I recently started building an offline, desktop app in Flutter as a collection of dev utilities: https://github.com/nileshtrivedi/devtoolbox

Flutter was a promising choice as it'd give me Windows, Mac OS and Linux build from a single codebase - and even the possibility of orgs running this internally as a self-hosted webapp. But one of the ideas I had was to bundle CyberChef with my app and open in a webview. Turns out, Flutter doesn't support webviews on desktop platforms at all. https://github.com/nileshtrivedi/devtoolbox/issues/4

mathnmusic··on Show HN: DevToolbox - Developer utilities as an offline desktop app in Flutter
Hi HN, dev here.

There are existing projects like CyberChef and DevUtils, but I wanted an offline app that was at least eventually open-source. This also gave me an opportunity to explore Flutter for cross-platform desktop apps. Flutter gives the ability to build native GUI apps for Windows, Linux, MacOS _and_ Web (in case organizations want to self-host it internally for their entire team). The value proposition is unresistable, because the only real alternative seems to be Electron.

Mac and Windows builds have been tested. The UI style is standard from the macos_ui package.

So far, Flutter has been a pleasant experience but the desktop platform seems not quite ready for prime time. For example, webviews are only supported on Android and iOS.

Mobilecoin is a quasi-security and not a stablecoin. The price went 5X in the days before Signal announced that they have built MobileCoin integration (in secret).

In a way, crypto has given non-profits a way to take profits out to personal accounts.

mathnmusic··on YC’s $500k Standard Deal
On keeping the captable "clean", this is what Michael Siebel had to say:

> Can we kill the myth that your company is screwed if there are too many investors on your angel/seed round cap table? Having too many angel/seed investors on a cap table has never killed a single YC startup. For founders who are raising: if you can get the money you need and reduce dilution as much as possible - I don’t care if you collect 1 check or 20.

mathnmusic··on My First Impressions of Web3
"Cheaper" for a use-case like hosting static assets for your website/webapp. Torrents have high overhead which only becomes justifiable for big files and high latency being acceptable.
mathnmusic··on Re: Moxie on Web3
WhatsApp does the counting of message forward completely on the client side. Their server does not know how many times a message has been forwarded.

THe article author's point was not that metadata is being sent in the clear, but that the real goal of encryption is to be unable to manipulate social behaviour. And because WhatsApp controls the client, they are able to do this without breaking E2EE or leaking metadata.

mathnmusic··on Stories Are Coming to Signal
> the centralized platform aspect and the use of phone number

Don't forget how Signal built MobileCoin integration completely in secret for a whole year. Public was kept in dark just so $MOB insiders could benefit handsomely.

mathnmusic··on My First Impressions of Web3
Sure, S3 is also cheaper than torrents. And HTTP/Telnet is cheaper than HTTPS/SSH. But some people do see value in math-based guarantees over those given by governments and courts. And others don't. We need both approaches to keep each other in check.
mathnmusic··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The quality problems often come from the poor proxy. Money being fungible means that the rich get higher weight in determining what's considered valuable. In this marketized system, who will value journalism - especially the kind that people in power need to hear, not what they want to hear. If the rich want to suppress a fact, they can buy fake news - and because price = value, the fake news becomes the new truth.

Quality of content is not quite "subjective" in general. Perhaps in entertainment.

mathnmusic··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
I didn't say "income tax" or "federal tax". I asked for examples of economies that don't collect taxes but have been effective. Survival is one important aspect of "being effective". So, an example that has survived to the present day would be more relevant.

The reason why charities underfund public goods is because of the well-known free-rider problem. It's the same reason why cryptocurrencies need to collect transaction fees and reward miners and cannot rely on charitable miners. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-rider_problem
