mathnmusic··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Is there a single economy that demonstrates this working effectively without taxes?
mathnmusic··on Crypto: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
What incentive does the developer of the second game have to support a portable account? We've seen how it played out with social networks. And if both game 1 and game 2 are by the same developer, then all that's needed for portability is a common account management service owned by the said developer.
mathnmusic··on My Evaluation of SvelteKit for Full-Stack Web App Development
How do you run background jobs (either schedule-based or one-off like sending emails)?

How do you hold a websocket channel with the client to push real-time updates?

IMHO, "Full stack" means a lot more than "can talk to the database".

mathnmusic··on Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
> How do we get rid of crypto entirely then? Stop everyone using it, shut it down and ban all of it?

Govts around the world could start treating tokens and NFTs as just another kind of security. Bitcoin and Ethereum would also qualify. Free speech never allowed anybody to issue ownership in projects for future gains without satisfying the regulations.

mathnmusic··on immudb – world’s fastest immutable database, built on a zero trust model
Users just need to insert signed data into the database for tamper-proofing.
mathnmusic··on immudb – world’s fastest immutable database, built on a zero trust model
Or a traditional database with read-only credentials and a function that adds "ORDER BY version DESC LIMIT 1".
mathnmusic··on Control as Liability
This is relying on something akin to a free market for laws: immigrate to a place which has better designed laws. I find it way too simplistic for real life. Network effects and other cost of switching can sustain bad regimes for quite a while. This applies as much to people immigrating across national boundaries, to religions imposing death penalty for apostasy to musicians being forced to be present on Spotify despite its terrible economics.

Should constitutional amendments be outlawed - just because people are "free" to immigrate if they don't like it?

mathnmusic··on Entire website in a single HTML file
loading="lazy" is for images that are NOT embedded in the same file. So we either have entire site in a single HTML file or we have scalability for large stes. There's no solution that gives us both.
mathnmusic··on Entire website in a single HTML file
I like how the site being discussed implements footnotes with a hidden checkbox followed by <small> tag: https://john-doe.neocities.org/
mathnmusic··on Entire website in a single HTML file
I have never understood why footnotes are added to the bottom when we have an interactive medium available at hand? Why not leverage <details> and <summary> to show them in-place without breaking the flow and without listing them all at bottom?

See your comment as an example. Why list all links at the bottom rather than in-place?

mathnmusic··on Web3 is going just great
So we agree that Bitcoin is more like a stock than a currency. Nobody calls Apple stock "most democratic type of currency/money/property in the world". There's a reason why SEC heavily regulates issues of security which promise future upside - regulations that Bitcoin circumvented.
mathnmusic··on Julia Computing's co-founder involved in government mass surveillance project
A unique ID can act as a common "foreign key" in multiple databases. All IDs earlier to this were purpose-specific (Driving License, PAN etc). But with UID, state governments as well as central governments are building 360 degree views of each citizen - without being subjected to any laws or regulations. Look up how SRDH were build using something called "non-organic seeding" and have continued despite Supreme court coming down on them heavily.
mathnmusic··on Web3 is going just great
> most democratic type of currency/money/property in the world, how can you argue against that?

Accepting any currency that's not a stablecoin, gives power (not just purchasing power) over you to those who bought it really cheap without doing as much labour or as much spending as much capital as the late ones. Bitcoin has been more of a security - like a startup's shares - benefiting early investors at the expense of late ones. It's the opposite of "democratic".

mathnmusic··on Apple CEO Tim Cook 'secretly' signed $275B deal with China in 2016
Ownership disputes exist in many places across the world. But making an island appear larger than it is, is a unique demand that reminds me of Indiana trying to pass a law that declared the value of pi to be equal to 3.
mathnmusic··on Django 4.0
You can experience all of this while staying in a single language ecosystem. Just recently, I had to build something in Javascript and got to know Express is no longer recommended. Fastify, Remix are the latest hotness. :)
mathnmusic··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
> If we're going to start legislating how we're all allowed to use energy that civilization has made available, who gets to decide what's allowed?

We already legislate different pricing for different applications. Household electricity has a different price than industrial usage. A 1000x price of electricity for certain applications is just a small extension of what we currently have.

mathnmusic··on India seeks to block most cryptocurrencies in new bill, government says
A door-and-lock is a single-agent system and therefore isn't a good analogy. Money always needs social consensus. In a blockchain, you're relying on others agreeing on a certain history. That society can decide to disagree with you and consider a different history as truth. It has happened multiple times on Ethereum and Bitcoin both.
mathnmusic··on India seeks to block most cryptocurrencies in new bill, government says
Banks can block accounts of centralized exchanges (and have done so in the past when govt asked them to). And once conversion from and to fiat money is disabled, there's very little value left in cryptocurrency.

mathnmusic··on Ask HN: I feel so shallow and dumb when I see what other smart people are doing
> I stopped giving a shit about "changing the world" when my kids came into my life.

Does that mean we oldies should be okay with tech employers showing a preference for young workforce?

mathnmusic··on Power Fx: open-source now available
Open source != Open governance. Consider Signal as an example. It's open-source but there's no developer "community".
mathnmusic··on XMPP, a comeback story
Arathorn, thanks for responding to comments here. Public discourse comes in all flavors and I appreciate you taking time to respond to the queries and comments. :)

AFAIK, there are 6 server implementations of Matrix protocol: Synapse (Python), Dendrite (Go), Conduit (Rust), Construct/Charybdis (C++), Plasma (Elixir), Jeon (Java). Are there any more that I have missed? Which ones other than Synapse are most mature? An unbiased comparison post (that remains updated) would be really useful.

A second question is: are the APIs between a homeserver and the frontend defined and standardized? I've noticed this in the ActivityPub ecosystem where it is usually very easy to use one frontend with another backend. Are matrix servers also written in the same way?

mathnmusic··on How imaginary numbers were invented [video]
Gauss complained about the name too. He suggested using "Direct, inverse and lateral numbers" instead of "positive, negative and imaginary numbers".

Imaginary numbers are not pairs. Complex numbers are. Continuing Gauss, I'd rename "complex numbers" as "planar numbers".

mathnmusic··on Memory leaks are crippling my M1 MacBook Pro
The battery that they made not replaceable. Interesting how it all fits together.
mathnmusic··on Metabook
The question is simple: Are they building it with end-to-end encryption? If not, it deserves all the criticism. Security/privacy has to be part of the design and cannot be bolted on post-facto.
mathnmusic··on Show HN: Motor Admin – No-code admin panel
This simply downloads a 65MB binary executable "motor-admin-Linux-x86_64" from GitHub and does not build from the code given in the repo. There's no visibility into what the binary actually contains or how to build it on my own.
mathnmusic··on Show HN: Motor Admin – No-code admin panel
What I meant to ask is: Why is the Dockerfile that generates https://hub.docker.com/r/motoradmin/motoradmin not available in the repo? It makes it hard to verify exactly what went into the image or to dockerize on my own. I don't see any instructions for building the binary executable either.
mathnmusic··on Show HN: Motor Admin – No-code admin panel
Thanks for building this! It seems to cover most features I'd want.

The Dockerfile is simply downloading a release from GitHub. Docker Compose file is referring to an existing image on DockerHub. How can I build a Docker image for myself starting from the code?

It would be nice to see Motor Admin listed in CapRover's (open-source PaaS for self-hosting) "One Click Apps" catalog: https://github.com/caprover/one-click-apps/

Even better would be to present all old comment threads on the latest link.
mathnmusic··on Mastodon: AGPLv3 FOSS social network server
I run my own instance in a convoluted way - I added ActivityPub source and sink support to my own webapp. But every user deserves account portability, not just those who know how to deploy and maintain a Mastodon instance.
