masterof0··on Show HN: Retire 35
I always liked the idea of FIRE, but I don't want to deprive my family of a decent lifestyle, so we can "retire" a bit sooner. All my friends that reached FIRE (fat FIRE), cashed out on either AirBnB or Uber IPO, definitely not something everyone can replicate. Like everything, you find people you take everything to the extreme, and tell you that counting pennies will take you to a comfortable retirement life, this type of people usually have something to sell you. In the other hand, I don't think reaching FIRE doesn't make your life miserable, or boring, etc... You can always work on something you really like, or do more volunteer work, etc. But the main idea of FIRE: saving money, and investing is not bad advice. In my case, If I were to hit the jackpot, I would just retire in South Asia, and work full-time in Open Source projects.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
Isn't that illegal? Checking on candidates current salary?
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
You are right, my friend, the guy that is replying your comments is taking the lower bound of the L4 and comparing with the upper bound of L5. Lol. How it works , at least at Google (and is worst at Amazon), is when you get promoted from Ln to Ln+1 , your salary increases just it surpasses the lower bound of the level you were promoted to. I know for a fact of people at Google, L4 that negotiated better TC than what my L5 has. So, but if my L5 jumps ship to Facebook, then he will be easily get a 30% increase, at least.

Capitalism.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
Not true either, Directors at FAANG have wayyyy more pressure than people who have bootstrapped their own business. Obviously depends on your business, but on average, running your own business gives you more flexibily than working for someone else. Once your at the Director level, the company owns your time, the pressure to deliver is way higher, because you can always spin another SaaS, but is very hard to get another Director position at another company once you get fired from one. Also, your kids/family can inherit your business, but not your job.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
I , in the other hand, prefer a company that understand that they run a business, they pay me, I work, and that's the end of it. I don't need to be inspired by any egomaniac in some sort of culty "we are a family" company , or work my ass of to make someone else's dream true. Spending time with family, friends, nature, ... etc. is way more important than slaving away for some ramdo.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
That almost never happens, at least at Google, unless you are running a very important project and you also bring offers from another FAANG. Otherwise, good luck.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
I'm on the fence on this one. Maybe running a freelancer business? Dunno. The thing is boosttraping a decent SaaS is pretty hard tho.
masterof0··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
>3. They think that promos (like this article), are at most only %10, while promos are more like a x1.5 to x2 of your income.

This is false on average, even at FAANG, getting promoted to the next level doesn't boost your TC that much, the company assumes that the promotion on itself is good enough prize. You usually get a better deal applying to the next level at another FAANG.

> 1. They tend to work double jobs at frankly lo..... This is also false, plenty of people that work for small companies, even being a 10X , "rockstar" , ... developer, would never get "promoted" to the next level, because , there is no next level, and the C-level positions are reserved for friends and family, and in some occasion to outside experienced executives.

30 years ago, climbing the corporate ladder was "the way" to get ahead, nowadays, people with small mildly successful SAAS businesses, consultant companies, podcasters, indie hackers etc... make way more than any Director at FAANG.

This is a very "boomer" take in general, and is also pretty cringe.

Oh no, you are right, I was just pointing out that jeezuz is not my lord nor my savior.
masterof0··on Beware of a New Amazon Token Crypto Scam
^^ this, I'm not a crypto maxi, but for what I have seen so far, the main point of all of those coins, is to get earlier, and hope that someone *cough* Elon *cough* pump it , so we can finally escape the rat race.

masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
Oh no , I like p*rn, definitely not defending any ban, I wish all countries legalize it.
masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
Indeed, maybe my phrasing was wrong, but I feel nationalism only creates feeds xenophobia, because is never "X government", is always "the chinese", "the russians" , "insert_the_current_buggy_man_here"... I also understand that there is no chance this will ever change.
masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
> True. It used to be 50k limit per year. Now because many bureaucratic procedures by banks, it might as well as be zero since you have go to the bank 10+ times. You're talking from a view of a foreigner. I'm talking from a view of native citizen.

Not true, I (and my wife) use our personal accounts to send money back and forth almost every week, so the thousands of chinese students, workers, etc...

masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
My wife has a BoC account (personal), no problem transferring money back and forth whatsoever, dunno other banks. You obviously need to get the iban or the shift code right. Your local bank should be able to help you.
masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
This is an US site, most people here believe that they hear from the media, and is understandable, the same way most Chinese people believe that they see in CCTV. I get people in China asking if I'm safe, or if my house was assaulted by antifa. I think people if they are really interested of what is happening in either country should do their research, instead of parroting what they hear in Youtube. But yeah, you will get downvoted , so will I. ;)
masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
I literally transfer money back and forth almost every week. So, not true. Regular international wire transfer work just fine, and most major banks allow it. Even foreigners can open such accounts. I have one.
masterof0··on Buying Influence: How China manipulates Facebook and Twitter
> You cannot transfer money out of country legally, pretty soon can't invest in other countries's stocks. Not true.

> You should not get rich (1/3 of billionaires have died or disappeared) Also not true. FuErDais are praise on TV, movies, etc... Crazy Rich Asians , the movie , was a huge hit in China for example, etc... Money and superficiality have always being huge in China (even to get married, you need to buy a house , a car, and give the girl's family money (CaiLi)). > You have to work 9-9-6. Which is why many citizens are lying flat Highly depends on where you work. But is not standarized, and there have been recently a huge push back from the goverment about this. > You cannot go beyond China's intranet Literally that's what VPNs are for, many chinese companies offer VPN services to mainland users, etc.

All other points are more or less right. Also, p*rn is illegal in most places. I wouldn't live there, but posting lies here wont help anyone.

masterof0··on Tor in 2022
Thank you.
masterof0··on Sublime Text 4 (Build 4126)
Any plan to add support for Remote Development, similar to what VS Code and Jetbrains Gateway offer?
masterof0··on Tor Snowflake Proxy
How is that a shitty take? Tor is compromised, so are most VPNs, but there are some VPN providers that dont store logs (allegedly) like Mulvad. I would take a maybe-is-compromised think over a known-to-be-compromised , every day. Also Correlation based attacks are not the only Tor flaw.
masterof0··on Tor in 2022
Honest question: What would be the use case for Tor, as is compromised[1] and painfully slow (judging from my personal experience, using it in the US and Asia, across the years). Is there any occasion where it will be better to use Tor than your self-hosted VPN?

They can just get a passport with a different name, and none of this would apply.
masterof0··on Google Sues Glupteba botnet [pdf]
Florida? Putting Florida and Hawaii in the same sentence, is funny at best. There are plenty of countries these guys can travel to, if they have enough money, they can get a passport with a different name, etc. People don't care about the US as much as Americans think. Maybe OPs is from some 3rd world country where going to America is the dream of a lifetime.
