master_crab··on If materialism is true, the United States is probably conscious
SCOTUS seems to believe so.
master_crab··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
They aren’t; the parent comment is incorrect. It’s safer to say Nvidia is encouraging the money that already exists to be deployed on AI buildouts.

But everyone is now chasing the same opportunity (AI and its dependencies like hardware and power) that will drive prices higher in those sectors until supply responds (or demand disappears).

master_crab··on Nvidia is the central bank of AI
“as long as it’s cash flow continues” is doing a lot of optimistic heavy lifting. The whole premise of the circular financing worry is that Nvidia sits in the middle of all the guarantees made to companies like OpenAI. If any of those companies become insolvent, Nvidia is on the hook for it.

Also Nvidia isn’t really creating money. The 500B number is third party capital that already exists (BX, Apollo, etc).

master_crab··on How to buy a good car for $1000
No such thing as wrong year nor wrong model, or even wrong brand as long as it works!

Or even make! Many manufacturers use the same supplier for various parts. The lock actuator on my 2010 dodge pickup is also used in Fords.

master_crab··on RTK reports token savings, but our cost benchmarks disagree
This is the way. Take it with a grain of salt (as the author mentions) but we have gotten much better results and less token usage after we hooked up our codebase to an indexing service’s MCP (in our case sourcegraph). But any indexing service will do.
master_crab··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
DO NOT DO THIS. It is 2026, just buy a 6 or 7 A/micro/mini adapters and just keep a handful of usb-c cables. It takes up less space and is easier to organize. And your cables are now mostly up-to-date and useful PD carriers.
master_crab··on Silicon Valley is transforming the military-industrial complex? (2024)
Economic embargoes are the least of Putin’s worries if he nukes a country.

More than likely Russia is ostracized to the point that other countries will treat it with active hostility.

And the most likely possibility is Putin is assassinated and the government overthrown due to internal opposition.

The same thing that would happen to America if Trump acts on his musings about tactically nuking Iran.

master_crab··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
Using a large database of (deidentified) medical records, the researchers compared the outcomes of people taking a GLP-1 for their type 2 diabetes to people taking other common diabetes drugs between 2017 and 2025. GLP-1 users were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with TB for up to a five-year span, they found.

Both of these studies are observational and retrospective, meaning they can only show a correlation between GLP-1 use and reduced (or at least less severe) infections, not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. At the same time, these are the only latest pieces of evidence pointing to a genuine germ-busting benefit from GLP-1 drugs.

I wonder if the likelihood that people taking a GLP-1 are probably better off financially, have a health care provider willing to spend on the drugs (and therefore probably a better medical system) or a combination of these and other traits are the real reason there are fewer infections.

master_crab··on Virginia Community Voids a $100B Data Center Project
I work in tech (like most of us on this website). But I’m originally from Northern VA. If you travel down Route 7, Route 50 or any of the numerous Parkways in the area you will see mile after mile of double height buildings just blighting what was otherwise a fairly bucolic area of the Appalachian foothills.
master_crab··on Apple Introduces New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
I had the same view recently. For the past year I’ve been using my iPad to remote into both my MacBook Pro M1 Max and my racked Linux workstation at home using Jump and moonlight/sunshine, respectively. Never looked back
master_crab··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
I’m even more confused by the economics of the frontier model businesses. Even if they got preferential prices, they are still paying an inordinate amount for their infrastructure.

If it wasn’t economically feasible without VC/Nvidia money 3 years ago, how is it possibly economically feasible now at 10x prices for things like memory?

master_crab··on Jane Street suffers $15B hit after meltdown at Situational Awareness
That’s the correct usage. Revenue includes gains and losses. Profit will take that number and subtract out the operational costs (salaries, market data subs, etc).
master_crab··on Jane Street suffers $15B hit after meltdown at Situational Awareness
No net revenue is still the top line number (just minus some things like allowances or some other artifact or exception). Profit is the bottom line.
master_crab··on GLM-5.3: Frontier coding with emergent cyber capabilities
That merely pushes the valuation onto the hardware makers, not the companies that have the temporary preferential access to their hardware.
master_crab··on AI companies are shredding rare books
It can be the case that everyone in “a fight” is wrong.
master_crab··on Judge halts Paramount's $111B purchase of Warner Bros. in win for US states
That’s not good either. It’s the same with poultry, many types of fruit, etc. This just makes the case further.
master_crab··on Judge halts Paramount's $111B purchase of Warner Bros. in win for US states
They don't have a monopoly on any meaningful product category.

By that reasoning I could have a monopoly on peanuts and it’s alright because consumers can choose from hundreds of other foods.

master_crab··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
I wonder what happens to that gas price once the SPR can no longer be drawn from?

master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Apologies. Not trying to come across as a prick.

But at least we both agree private dns =/= split brain. :)

master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Bless your sweet heart if you think private DNS servers are split horizon. :)
master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Because I was responding to this comment you had made:

So what's your solution when you have a wholly private service that will never have a public v4 address, nor a publicly routable v6? How do clients get the address for a nice domain name without the addresses in public DNS?

Which, if you claim you use private DNS, you know you can indeed solve by only having the private records sit on your private DNS service that can only be hit by clients on the internal network. Without the architectural bad practice of implementing split horizon.

master_crab··on Apple's rumored M7 Ultra targets 1.5TB and Blackwell-class AI performance
The M-series are ARM chips based on the A series from the iPhones. Therefore Apple had ten years of chip design (plus the prior decades of ARM history) to rely on. The GPUs and modems were a much more recent effort.

(My take. happy to be corrected by someone with chip design experience who can comment.)

master_crab··on Apple Silicon Exec Explains Mac Mini AI Demand and On-Device Future
100%. Orchestrating multiple sub agents is a key requirement for many workflows. If only because it minimizes context sprawl (amongst multiple other reasons).

There is probably a middle ground though. Something like a main thread agent (say a local model for Hermes) orchestrating cloud based sub agents.

master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
You don’t. You avoid split horizon because of the silent (usually failure) mechanics it introduces.
master_crab··on GPT-5.6, Grok 4.5, Claude, and Muse Spark build the same 4 apps
A lot of these are visual-heavy tests that often require first person sight to confirm results. Considering GLM isn’t multimodal, that might explain why it did better on the calculator question and not much else.
master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Wait…what? You have a fully internal service and you dont have an internal DNS server? I guess those exist in theory, but not in practice. :)

If you have a heavy enough tech stack to run fully internal services, than you can also run an internal DNS service (even pihole is enough) and load internal only entries there.

Or add everything to your hosts file if you have a central config service.

master_crab··on TLS certificates for internal services done right
Split brain =/= done right.

This introduces all sorts of aberrant behavior. Most notably that clients will get different responses depending on their query and route that you now have to test for. It also is a “silent” deviation for audiences that may not be aware of.

I’m not sure what problem that is trying to be solved here? That the OP wanted internal users seeing a different site than external users? Or using a different route in? In both those cases the correct user behavior is to use a different DNS record.

Containers is often the reason. You start a container and you are immediately pulling in a quarter to half a gig or more (often the latter).
