massivecali··on Streaming video has surpassed cable subscriptions worldwide
I wonder what those numbers would be if everyone had broadband. Everyone I know who has satellite or mobile hotspot internet can't use streaming media. For them it's impractical or too expensive.

Didn't see anything regarding what they consider a subscription. Are hotels, hospitals, bars, nursing homes etc. lumped in with the figures?

massivecali··on Fish oil supplements linked to prostate cancer (2013)
I think the part about pollutant free shouldn't be overlooked. Some labels claim they have removed harmful things like mercury from their fishoil supplements. Eating fish and shellfish in large quantities eould certainly increase your exposure to that and other contaminants.
massivecali··on Homeless, living in a tent and employed: The changing face of homelessness
It's up, but behind one of those garbage begwalls.
massivecali··on Nation's only Civil War pensioner collects $73 a month from VA (2017)
I see this as a reminder of why you shouldn't remove an option from a form just because you find it unlikely or improbable.
massivecali··on So you want your app/website to work in China
Offtopic, but HN has always been a reliable check for me as to whether or not I have data service or it's just extremely slow as it always loads.
massivecali··on Cambridge spin-out starts producing graphene at commercial scale
As a former Slashdotter, I've seen this joke on every single article about "nanotubes".
massivecali··on Update on New Zealand
Responsible people did report it to the proper authorities, which is not Facebook. Reporting it to Facebook so they can take it down and prevent people from knowing what is happening is not responsible.
massivecali··on Facebook’s algorithm change has spurred an angry, Fox News-dominated News Feed
People believe that paying higher costs for something mean it is of higher value than that which is free. "You get what you pay for." But if you disagree with the content of a site, why would you pay for it in the first place?
massivecali··on A solar-powered, self-hosted version of Low-Tech Magazine
The thread is about a solar powered site and energy use.

A great graphic design tip for simple websites is stop using additional files. If you can't do it with a single HTML file, you're adding unnecessary complexity.
massivecali··on EPA Looks to Move Forward with Blending More Ethanol in Summer Gasoline
The gumminess comes from degrading rubber hoses and seals, neither of which are found in a plastic bottle.
massivecali··on Ask HN: How can I learn how to paint?
The problem with aesthetic guidance is it invariably leads to creation of 'product' over 'art'. Just because you can make a pretty painting doesn't make it art.
massivecali··on Bribes to Get into Yale and Stanford? What Else Is New?
The first is for the benefit of all the other students in the form of reduced tuition grants, a new library, lab equipment etc. The other is for the benefit of the bribe taker. There are lots of situations that elevate X over accomplishment, but this seems like one with actual benefit on a large scale. That said, I hope they all get punished for it.
massivecali··on Graying Out
Trillian used to be my goto for combining everyone's communication preferences. Worked great for the time. Sad none of those things work like they used to.
massivecali··on How Bluetooth got its name – an interview with Jim Kardach
Or for anyone who has already seen Kingsmen:

The King of Sweden : Bluetooth technology.

Eggsy : Which, of course, got its name from the legendary Danish king Harald Blatand, whose name translates to 'Bluetooth' in English.

[back in England, Roxy is relaying all the information through Eggsy's glasses]

Roxy : And the Bluetooth logo is his initials in Norse runic symbols.

Eggsy : And, as I'm sure you know, the Bluetooth logo is his initials...

Princess Tilde : Yup.

Eggsy : ...in Norse runic symbols.

I see the house dj speaker aspect, but why does anyone need the first 2 when their phones accommodate those functions?
massivecali··on Show HN: The Jankest Autonomous Drone Built and Programmed from Scratch
Great! Thanks!
massivecali··on Show HN: The Jankest Autonomous Drone Built and Programmed from Scratch
I've only seen the word written as jank, janky or jankiest. First for jankest. Where can I view photos of the various physical build attempts?
massivecali··on I’d rather be dead than linger on in an old folks’ home
It was a mixed bag as far as reactions. Some family is religious, some incapable of expressing emotion, some work in healthcare and have seen death enough to accept it. Living in pain with no personal hope is a big gap. Having others force their idea on you about what you should accept as 'things to live for' seems more depressing than anything to me. It's always harder on the living because we are selfish in wanting a person to stick around who does not want to.
massivecali··on Deadlines and sprints are bad for you
No true scotsman. If everyone is working efficiently, why would the team need another layer of overhead to do the job they are already doing?
massivecali··on Deadlines and sprints are bad for you
I know how long it takes me to accomplish a task given spherical cows. Since nothing is stable (test environment, content, other fires), the story points are irrelevant.
massivecali··on I’d rather be dead than linger on in an old folks’ home
My grandmother was fairly irate that she recovered from pneumonia and grandfather did not. She kept asking when she was going to die and was very straightforward about the entire ordeal. She said something along the lines of 'all my friends are dead and I've lived long enough.'
massivecali··on Deadlines and sprints are bad for you
There's nothing about the scrum process that helps me, as an engineer, to work more efficiently. I work at the same pace regardless of what fictional story points are assigned to a task. The entire charade is only for middle managers to communicate up the chain what is happening. Velocity can be massaged so easily that it is a useless metric.
massivecali··on US citizens will need a visa to visit Europe starting in 2021
It's not unlike renting a car in San Diego and not being allowed to take it into Mexico. The risk of theft is higher than the wish to deal with and the reality of successful prosecution/recovery is incredibly low. Rent a car in Germany and you are specifically told what countries you can't visit without higher rates or lower class of car.
massivecali··on Updates from YC
How would moving more businesses there lower the crime rate?

Poverty is always touted as the source of crime in communities, but businesses moving from SF to Oakland wouldn't be employing Joe/Jolene poor person. If anything, doing so would just rehash the standard complaint about gentrification and alienation of current residents.

massivecali··on Updates from YC
Oakland is dangerous and gross compared to SF, and that's saying something as I found heroin needles next to a bench eating lunch in a beautiful office courtyard. I was accosted outside of the Oakland station in broad daylight and local police couldn't have cared less. "The violent crime rate in Oakland, California, is 1,421 per 100,000 residents. Forty-nine people were murdered in the city in 2016." https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-dangerous-cities-i...

Please let's make smarter choices about where to move businesses to, given numerous options. Oakland definitely should not be one of them.

massivecali··on Everyone should read support emails
I've worked on several projects where the actual needs would get distorted between the customers and the developers in a perverse game of telephone. Each producer or manager feeling the need to reinterpret as they saw fit.

massivecali··on Square Inc. Co-Founder Tristan O’Tierney Dies at 35
I have chronic painful peripheral neuropathy from alcohol abuse. I wouldnt describe it as being on fire; however, more like random jabs from needles on top of a constant numbness associated with your feet being asleep that no amount of movement or rubbing can satisfy. The doctor prescribed neurontin which I took for a year while unemployed. It made me incredibly drowsy while only marginally helping with the pain. When I started working I chose to discontinue taking it and just live with the pain as I found myself unable to stay awake while coding. It's funny at times to be sitting in a meeting trying to listen to someone while not expressing outwardly that an invisible dagger is being driven into my thigh. :)
massivecali··on Entire staffs at 3 Sonic locations quit after wages cut to '$4/hour plus tips'
To be fair, this was published 20 minutes ago on a Friday after work for US. Not hard to get some magic promotion in that fashion.
