massivecali··on Pepsi Plans to Project a Giant Ad in the Night Sky Using Cubesats
It's like they didn't even read the recent article on all the lost cubesats in orbit. :) https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/2/18277344/space-situational...
massivecali··on Lyft vs. Uber: A Tale of Two S-1’s
Crediting my account isn't a refund. I never requested a credit. So I stand by my assertion that it is fraud. The same goes for having to meticulously scour my trip logs for where the driver didn't end the ride when I exited the vehicle, or other such shenanigans.
massivecali··on Lyft vs. Uber: A Tale of Two S-1’s
Do those figures include refund fraud?

I've reported several fraudulent trips; trips where the driver accepts my fare and pretend he's actually picked me up and then ends the trip after some time. When I requested a refund, Uber happily credits my account, not my credit card that they billed.

Seems like some fancy accounting tricks that bump up numbers are being ignored too.

massivecali··on How does it feel to be watched at work all the time?
That would mean they have to resort to manually adjusting the velocity indicator on a spreadsheet.
massivecali··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
I was waiting to finish my taxes for state and federal before replying to this.

Turbotax was 100% free for both with automatic imports of my forms. As long as you avoid upgrading to unnecessary services beyond their basic service, you can file for free and save PDFs of both returns when you're finished.

massivecali··on Please Don't Say Just Hello In Chat (2013)
As others here have said, ignoring the 'hello' is the best bet. For those on the asking end, my advice is to ask your question and if it goes beyond a simple answer, follow up with 'do you have time to talk about this now?' Most people assume I have time or desire to answer a flood of questions because I responded to the first simple one, which isn't usually the case.
massivecali··on The National Inquirer Is Up for Sale
The title of the publication is National Enquirer according to the actual article title. "National Enquirer Is Put Up for Sale After Bezos, Trump Scandals"
massivecali··on Search all Craigslist cities for a remote job
I thought Padmapper got their start that way, by essentially providing a better apartment hunt interface than CL had at the time.
massivecali··on Camera Above the Classroom
Whatever you want to call them, the basics/classics/fundamentals are all just primers to get your mind firing on all cylinders. Having access to all the knowledge in the world is useless if you don't know what questions to ask or what direction to take. And since everyone doesn't learn in the same manner, exposure to a wide variety of subject matter eventually works well enough for most people.
massivecali··on Polish general who fought with Washington may have been female
I think in this context, the question is about the soldier. Female family members ARE buried at Arlington, as you point out, but with their male veteran spouse/parent. Female soldiers seems to be a recent thing, as they traditionally were confined to noncombat roles.

This article describes an apparent long running dispute on the issue: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/female-wwii-pilots-barred-from-...

massivecali··on 2.7M Americans Still Get Netflix DVDs in the Mail
I can't recall going to Blockbuster to rent something I had already seen. Usually more time was spent when they introduced the walls of empty boxes. Sometimes you found a case which served as representing a physical copy behind the counter, while most of the time was waiting for employees to check their return slot to see if what you wanted was there without being scanned back into inventory yet.
massivecali··on Dehumanization of cyclists predicts self-reported aggressive behaviour to them
Slow trucks are obligated to pull to the side of the road when traffic backs up behind them. Bicycles ignore that.
massivecali··on Why Do Buses Bunch?
This is great in theory, but not in practice. A bus in back sees the bus in front stop so it passes. However the bus in front might be full and only drops off one pasenger while more than one pasenger is waiting to board and are thus denied. Again, simple dismissal of the problem is ignorant of reality.
massivecali··on Why Do Buses Bunch?
Which, as a patron who doesn't want to sit for an hour in the sun, is really not acceptable. The bus is not supposed to be in a race, they are supposed to make predictable stops along a predetermined route.

Most bus stops I have used in the US dont have covered shelters or enough space for passengers to wait outside of the elements. Usually this means sitting under the overhang of a nearby business. If the bus doesn't want to stop for whatever reason and blows by, it sucks.

Maybe a better future would be a public bus app or button at the stop that I can press to say I am waiting, but until that day, they should stop.

massivecali··on Dehumanization of cyclists predicts self-reported aggressive behaviour to them
It's also astonishingly easy for cyclists to flaunt road rules against the rest of us who sre aghast at accidentally killing another human being, regardless of their violations of the rules of the road.
massivecali··on Boston Dynamics’ new robot stacks boxes [video]
Many retired people return to work after retirement out of boredom. Humans need tasks, be it for money or purpose. If we arent trying to attain food or shelter due to automation, what's the point? Not everyone takes well to hobbies. It might be great several generations in the future, but it's going to be a culture shock for those raised on working.
massivecali··on How developers and tech founders can turn their ideas into UI design
"Look at what other apps are doing and copy it!" Agree that most of the time this is horrible direction, but I've also experienced the opposite: "We need something like X, but do Y." Where Y is reinventing the wheel for what should be a standard interface element (ie it's the best implementation on the market and ours would only be worse/confusing if we didn't try to do the same).
massivecali··on F-35's Towed Decoys
And WW1 biplanes would travel too slow for the modern jet to engage with no heat signature for a2a missiles. I feel I saw this in a movie.
massivecali··on The Death of External Storage: Where's Google?
Is there such thing as robot.txt for folders that could be implemented by programs/apps? There are plenty of things that create folders of thumbnails, ui/ux sprites, etc.
massivecali··on Nasa proves its space helicopter can fly on Mars
By having alternate crafts that can move quickly, we might be able to better guesstimate if it's worth the time of the slow rover to change course and investigate a blip on the map. Alternatively, fast craft could fly around and drop beacons on areas of interest to be investigated at a later time. Beacons that could be sensor probes returning data of interest.

massivecali··on Garfield phones beach mystery finally solved
Suprised there was no mention of the Lego spill: "Nearly 4.8 million Lego toy parts fell overboard from the Tokio Express container ship in a storm off Land's End on 13 February 1997." https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-28582621
massivecali··on FTC Seeks to Examine the Privacy Practices of U.S. Broadband Providers
Tell that to my DirecTV satellite tv.
massivecali··on McDonald's Acquires Machine-Learning Startup Dynamic Yield for $300M
What quality improvement do you think McDonald's needs? They have already gone to excessive lengths to appeal to parents and advocacy groups by adding healthy meal options (apple slices, milk, salads) and reducing portion sizes (which helps them more in the profit department, than it helps the overweight consumers) and clearly showing the breakdown of each item on a large prominent poster near the register. They're a fast food restaurant who has already gone above and beyond all of their closest competitors IMO.
massivecali··on FTC Seeks to Examine the Privacy Practices of U.S. Broadband Providers
You wouldn't notice when your GPS goes out off and on while in inclement weather. It's a service that can degrade gracefully. Some systems revert to other sensors when you lose GPS signal (tunnels, underground, etc). However, you would certainly notice when your packets drop and your video/audio streaming cuts out.
massivecali··on Life on the wrong side of China’s social credit system
That was my point. As someone who walks a lot, there are also large parts of the US that are wholly inaccessible by foot.
massivecali··on Life on the wrong side of China’s social credit system
As I've been reminded countless times, "driving is a privilege not a right". You can lose your license for all kinds of 'unfair' reasons that do not make sense, and I agree it's heavy handed to include student loan debt, but until it is Federally acknowledged that all citizens have a right to drive (after passing proper license tests), then this downward progression will continue.

In California you can't even register your vehicle if you're behind on your child support payments. (I need my job to make payments. I can't get to my job without my car.)

massivecali··on FTC Seeks to Examine the Privacy Practices of U.S. Broadband Providers
Until satellites solve the weather transmission interference problems, that's a long way off.
