Just flying near one would rip it to shreds.

Then you shoot at it with a radar guided missile instead.

WW1 biplanes, IIRC, were mainly wood frames with cloth coverings. I imagine the radar returns are going to be minimal.

I think you'd be surprised how much of a return machine guns and radial engines will create...
