martin8412··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
Which was caused by the exact problem they’re trying to avoid by not going on a spending spree to increase manufacturing capacity.

They had built way too much capacity during the 90s and were losing money on every chip because they couldn’t run the fabs at full capacity. That’s why they colluded to increase the price to save their collective hides.

A new competitor wouldn’t be able to enter the market and lower the prices without also losing money. That’s not the case today, the Chinese are trying hard to do just that.

It has honestly gotten frustrating to even read anything on the internet these days. It’s just conspiracies upon conspiracies all the time, and it’s constantly in your face.

If only they were good conspiracies with some weight to them, but no, they fall apart if you have a rudimentary understanding of the subject.

martin8412··on I think the data center backlash is mostly about data centers
None of those things are inherently true. I know it’s happening with a few DCs in the US operated by scrupulous people, but it’s far from the normal.

Datacenters don’t need to use much water outside of normal office needs. They don’t need to increase energy costs. They don’t need to pollute or make any noise in normal conditions.

If they do any of those things in normal operations, it’s due to lacking regulations or the lack of enforcement of existing regulations.

martin8412··on New era for Gibraltar with removal of border controls with Spain
The difference of course being that Gibraltar used to be Spanish, while Ceuta and Melilla never have been parts of Morocco. Portugal has more claim to those two enclaves than Morocco ever did.
martin8412··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
All cars in the EU has to pass periodic inspections. All safety equipment must be in working order to pass.
martin8412··on Tesla Full Self Driving uses bicycle lane in official Denmark approval video
Depending on what the car does, the driver might lose a point on their drivers license.

Once you’ve lost three points within three years, you lose your drivers license and will have to retake it. Depending on circumstances you might have a ban for some amount of time(finite or indefinite).

How does that help everyone else on the streets? Everyone becomes a victim of poorly working automated driving.
martin8412··on Ask HN: Are orbital data centers possible / a good idea?
The distance is greater = higher latency.

It’s why satellite internet was usually pretty terrible. A simple TCP handshake becomes a multi-second endeavor.

martin8412··on Stripe is friendly to “friendly fraud”
A similar thing as what you propose already exists in the Nordics. You pay with your card as normal, and the receipt gets logged automatically in the app.

martin8412··on Spain's parliament will act against massive IP blockages by LaLiga
It was. La Liga isn’t satisfied with the response time of Cloudflare. Cloudflare would not commit to content being taken down during while the match is still going.

La Liga wants to be able to point to a URL hosted by Cloudflare and demand it taken down that instant while the match is still on. It would require dedicated staff at Cloudflare to deal with La Liga stream takedowns.

martin8412··on Spain to expand internet blocks to tennis, golf, movies broadcasting times
The number will increase each year for sure. If all people are forced to pay, what’s to prevent them from charging 100€ a year or more?

martin8412··on US businesses and consumers pay 90% of tariff costs, New York Fed says
Okay, so if they lose that case, Trump will just pass a new executive order that once again takes months to resolve.
martin8412··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
Gigapress has almost nothing to do with Tesla. It is just the name given by Tesla to a process they purchase from a third party vendor(Idra Group). Tesla was the first to use this product for large scale automotive production though.

martin8412··on Judge said Meta illegally used books to build its AI
I wonder what will happen when inevitably someone sues one of the AI companies for copyright infringement in a different country, because fair use is to my knowledge an entirely American concept.

Where’s the threshold for forcing AI companies to retrain models without specific copyrighted works in them?

martin8412··on UN says scam call centers are epidemic and expanding globally
Indeed. All these issues with scam calls from spoofed numbers should lead to BCP38, but for phones. Someone calling shouldn’t be allowed to set their own number in the first place, but we could start by limiting country codes. There’s no reason that a phone should be able to spoof the country of origin. If you want a phone number in France, you can go get a number from a French provider.

martin8412··on PG&E asks to raise rates for California customers so it can pay investors more
Well, that sounds more like a discussion about if it should be a private company, government run or some kind of coop owned by the customers.

The last one generally benefits the customers.
