martin1975··on Founders Fund Makes Bet on Bitcoin
As opposed to Bitcoin, Ethereum and its ilk, whose problems have all (or even mostly) been figured out by the laymen people? Their PR consists of actively disclosing all their efforst in peer reviewed journals, demonstrating accountability and transparency and talking about their vision. They've already formally proved Ouroboros works, which is the core of their product. Proving means the math works exactly as intended. The proofs are available and published. If anyone with enough know how can disprove them, they are more than welcome to. No such rigor exists for ANY of the 1000 currencies.

Plus Charles seems down to earth and believes in working one's ass off, organic growth and hey, this is gonna be a favorite for all HN readers - FP!

I already bought some ADA...and will hold it. Never held Bitcoin nor Ethereum for any appreciable amount of time and I do not think they scale or can achieve massive, stellar success and assimilation into economies with their current architecture. Cardano is like Bitcoin 3.0.

What he says, particularly around the process of peer reviewed papers they're submitting to crypto conferences, makes perfect sense. No one has been able to bring this kind of rigor to cryptocurrency to date.

My only hope is they stay nimble, agile, responsive to the community's concerns and questions...... and deliver something iteratively instead of shooting for the stars. Their base is solid, they just need to build upon it now.

martin1975··on Founders Fund Makes Bet on Bitcoin
Voted you up. I think if people looked into how Cardano does what they do, they'd realize it "cures" all of the ills of Bitcoin, Ethereum and every other unscalable PoW currency in an elegant, provably correct way. I personally think the future of cryptocurrency is going to look far more like Cardano than Bitcoin. Not saying any of the top contenders are going away, they just will be glued/superseded by something like Cardano for more or less anything these others aspired to become, e.g. microtransactions, better/nearly infinite scalability, etc.

PoW is not ecologically friendly, and that will be one of its growth inhibitors.

martin1975··on Founders Fund Makes Bet on Bitcoin
He bet wrong. Should have made a monster bet on Cardano.

I've been preaching this for years... if MS adopts Linux, ups their GUI effort to create something useful atop Wayland, while providing a seamless way to run Win32 apps until the world migrates to Linux on the desktop helmed by Microsoft, they will completely destroy Apple on short notice.

It would be a major, revolutionary move for Nadella to do this and I doubt he has the heft or charisma to sell this to the board/shareholders, but if Microsoft goes full steam ahead on Linux and dumps Windows, it's buh-bye Apple and everything they ever produced. They can probably even eat into Google's droid pie.

Ditch Win32/NT, port the cash cow called MS Office to Linux and polish a Windows-like GUI atop Linux/Wayland in the best way they can, be it via Qt, GTK, I don't care - just get it done... and set the world ablaze and free.

Bet you they could probably deliver something in under 3 years.

MuniFiber.com. Towns are slowly rolling their own fiber to the home. This is one answer to breaking cable monopolies.

edit:

Apologies, muninetworks.org is the true website. I've been reading way too much about FTTH obviously and partially substituted the website name :)

martin1975··on The real battle for net neutrality begins: The people v. FCC
In choosing a corporate shill like Pai, I think Trump has no idea of the kind of Trojan horse he unwittingly planted for his 2020 re-election. NN is, at least in my view, an entirely non-partisan, cross cutting concern/issue that concerns -everyone-, regardless of their views held on any particular point.

Yes, I am aware that increasing ISP competition will nullify the need for NN, but that is -not- where we are now, are we? Leave the regulation in place, or at least put some serious conditions and stimuli for new broadband investments if you're going to repeal NN. The way they went about it now makes it look like all they're trying to do is enrich the entrenched players.

This is sure to bite this administration in the ass far more than they imagined.

martin1975··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
I sent a message to our mayor, to which he responded, regarding muni fiber... It seems the best way to approach it is via a public-private partnership - meaning, we (the residents of our 50,000+ city in SoCal) pay for the buildout, own the fiber infrastructure that should be good for at least 3-5 decades, while someone like Cox, GFiber or whomever provides billing/maintenance/operations.... that way it's a win win and the city doesn't have to get involved in becoming a full blown ISP.

In his response he said the topic's been brought up before. If I get his and the council's blessing, the next thing is to hit the ground and get probably 3000-5000 signatures and put this up on a ballot in 2018 November to see how the city feels. I'm optimistic however cause I've been hearing multiple complaints, on-goingly about bad service from ISPs (and we have Cox here, and I don't think they're that bad as opposed to Comcast) and probably a pet peeve is data caps... Sure, we've 1TB caps which is plenty, but w/advent of 4k TV and IPTV ... that may be very low.

Here's to hope that in a few years we all have FTTH where I live (crossing my fingers!)

Have you considered moving into sales? With your technical background as an engineer, you can certainly forage into sales with the right mentorship.

Sales is about the only type of 'job' that you will feel a proportionate reward to the effort you put in, meaning, you get more if you sell more (e.g. work longer/harder), whereas there's no financial incentive to work longer if you are salaried.

Of course, with sales you pay a different price - time-wise. You may have to be on the road a lot and work longer hours. But many people who are now considered very well off got that way through sales (e.g. John Doerr, who was one of Intel's greatest sales people).

Another way, and this is a tall order, is to find something your company (or the company's customer rather) needs, and try to get something started/prototyped before it becomes an actual project, then pitch that to management/sales/marketing. This way, you create value that was going to be created anyway on the company's dime, but you do this on your own time and hopefully in time for the company to adopt it and transition into your product idea. I know at least a few projects like this where I work, it's just that I value family time above extra cash that isn't really going to make a massive difference to my lifestyle.

I'm talking about software here mostly, as the barrier of entry to creating a software prototype of something is usually lower than creating a hardware prototype of something, depending on application of course.

Notice however, even if you do create something that's of value while working for someone else - you still end up having to 'sell' it to stakeholders within the company who can further give you a budget to polish it... or worst case, you may have to kill it if they don't like it, or don't approve of your methods- mostly because anytime you code something that involves using the company's source code as a base, they get to claim ownership of the IP (software). You read your employment contract, right?

This way, by putting above and beyond your 40 hr/week, you can most assuredly extract promotions and/or additional equity, without taking on the massive stress or risk of venturing out on your own. If you find it too time consuming to code on your own time, there's always options to hire foreign talent from countries with a lower standard of living to help you with coding - though that has its risks too, it's most definitely a viable avenue. I've done that for people who needed me to build simple websites for a lot cheaper than if I had done the website myself as a US-based engineer and usually marked up their rate by 20% or so. I've seen outfits mark up 100% or more... it all depends on what's acceptable to the engineer you're hiring, your customer and ultimately your take.

As you hopefully intuited, if you want the rewards to be proportionate to your effort instead of salaried, it almost always involves some kind of salesmanship in addition to being an astute coder/engineer/techie.

Yet another way is to becomes a serial start-up-eneur. Continue joining startups until one of them hits it off. This is less risk, but many people have gotten well off this way too.

I'm sure there are other ways, I just can't think of them now :)

martin1975··on Radical diet can reverse type 2 diabetes, new study shows
You are one of them, I assume? How much weight did you lose, over what period of time, and what is your weight right now? Are you a doctor by any chance?
martin1975··on Radical diet can reverse type 2 diabetes, new study shows
Well I know what most assuredly can reverse type 2 diabetes at least in overweight people - metabolic surgery. I was 30+ BMI, in the category 1 obese - nothing serious like rolling downhill kind of obese, however for a 5'9" at nearly 210 lbs (and not really going down), I was big..it's just that I'm one of those people who hides his weight really well (or carries it, if you prefer).

I had a VSG procedure 6+ months ago.. prior to it my (bad) cholesterol was high, I felt like lethargic s__t most of the time physically/mentally, and I'm pretty sure I had metabolic syndrome.. was also borderline hypertensive.

As age increases, none of this gets better, and quite frankly, no amount of exercise is truly going to reverse weight. What's needed is resetting the metabolic set point we all have, and unless you dedicate a significant chunk of your time/life by paying attention to everything you eat (e.g. probably low carbs/high protein for most like me), coupled with keeping in shape (e.g. 30 mins/daily exercise, nothing strenuous but enough to break sweat)... 90% of the time you're going to go back up to your metabolic set point weight, or worse, rebound above it if you lost the weight too fast.

This was shown to be the case with more or less 80-90% of Biggest Loser winners, whom were monitored 5 years down the road and determined to have regained all the weight and worse, more in some cases.. The ones who kept it off do so at a great expenditure of time as I pointed out above.

Top this w/the fact if you have a FT job or a business to run and a family to take care of... you will see the impossibility of losing weight to stave off all the potential diseases (type 2 diab included).

I've got your answer - but you won't like it because you have to give up your food addiction - bariatric surgery.

I've lost nearly 40 pounds since my VSG and am at a weight at 40+ years of age that I was in my late teens. Blood pressure, cholesterol, all normalized... energy through the roof. Moderate exercise, and I only do it because I feel like it now whereas before I felt like I was forcing it when I was obese/heavy.

Please look into this (ASMBS.org), and make a life altering choice that will possibly extend and -definitely- improve your quality of life as well as reverse type 2 diabetes and many other diseases related to being over weight.

If insurance won't cover it because you are not TOO FAT (like 35+ BMI), bariatricpal.com has doctors from all over the world, Mexico included that have performed successful surgeries with glowing reviews from Americans and Canadians for less money than what you'd pay in the USA (e.g. obesitycontrolcenter.com being a prime example, where I had mine).

Life's short... don't let being overweight ruin it.

I'm a software dev and it confused me initially as well since I thought now you can write Go native apps for Android...

Google's just been in some kind of a brain freeze lately... they still can't get a useful chat client that everyone uses (i.e. like whatsapp, or viber even), they royally screwed the pooch by removing the 3.5 mm jack on the Pixel 2.... had screen issues with it as well...

Well, Ajit Pai says it stifles investments. Apparently investments fell by 5% or so over a period of time since the Title II classification. While I love NN, I also hate no viable competition to cable/ISP monopolies. I don't think NN would be an issue if everyone had at least 3 viable choices of broadband providers. That's the right (tm) way to address it, or should I say market-based, by fostering competition via policy.
martin1975··on Intel will ship processors with integrated AMD graphics and memory
I'm a huge fanboy of open source, and this move is a boon for Linux given Intel HD's and AMD's GPU OSS drivers on the laptop as well as the desktop. Not to mention it will further emphasize the division of gaming vs non-gaming rigs, meaning NVidia vs AMD(ATI?)/Intel, and hopefully extinguish NVidia completely from business/work-purpose computers (or even gaming rigs if possible, since AMD/ATI's GPUs are rather decent too!). Forgive my severe, palatable dislike for NVidia in this post.

Looks like it's time to upgrade my ThinkPad once Lenovo integrates this setup into their T line.

Well done, Lisa Su!

martin1975··on Jeff Bezos’ guide to life
Work life balance and Amazon ... sounds a bit ironic, but having worked there for a year, if you're at Amazon or thinking about working at Amazon, I want to leave you with one big, massive piece of advice - if you don't know how to say "no", Amazon isn't the place for you.

What do I mean by this? Amazon has an infinite amount of work they will gladly load you up with - on-call duty, maintaining legacy stuff and doing new projects.

If you don't know how to carve out your boundaries, you're going to be in a world of hurt at Amazon, get demoralized very quickly and either get axed after a bad review (like me) or you're going to quit or worse, stay miserable and go gray before your time.

Another tidbit of advice my boss - who also no longer is there - gave me, is you have to be a dick to succeed at Amazon.

I'll just leave you with that before you choose to surrender to the cult of Bezos.

martin1975··on Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle Nvidia
Great news. The only way we will see progress w/OpenGL, and eventually Vulkan, as well as Wayland and its litany of Wayland enabled compositors is with open source drivers.

Intel and AMD seems to have seen the light of Linux. I wonder who's next - Microsoft perhaps ditching Windows for Linux and building a super GUI on top of Linux to make it an OS X killer?

martin1975··on Broadcom Explores Deal to Acquire Chipmaker Qualcomm
It probably makes more business sense to do this mega merger/acquisition rather than continue to sue each other into oblivion over IP. The last settlement between QCOM and Broadcom was almost a billion dollar payment from QCOM to Broadcom... while that may not necessarily kill off Qualcomm, can't say it's not a major dent in their pocket after 4+ years of litigation.

This the reason why services like Gab are on the rise. They guarantee your freedom of speech - which includes "hate speech" - http://wapo.st/2yl0MBP, confirmed by SCOTUS to be legal (http://bit.ly/1V8FdH3).

The reason Google, Facebook, Twitter, Cloudflare are able to get away with outright censorship of what is legally deemed to be free speech, however unpopular or distasteful it may be, is because of archaic laws that do not fit very well with speech over a medium like the internet - the above bad actors all claim private property rights and use those to trump (no pun intended to POTUS :) our constitutionally guaranteed right to (legal) free speech. The scariest/most extreme example of this was Cloudflare's example of its CEO waking up on the wrong foot one day and deciding to remove Daily Stormer's DDOS protections because he felt like it. DS is about as politically incorrect as they get, topping even 4chan's /pol/, IMHO, but it is protected speech.

Until the laws are changed to say that your ownership of a server that hosts my public speech has no right to abridge my expression, this is going to continue ad nauseum... usually through the proliferation of so called "community standards", which is basically another way of saying, "we get to determine what you can say."

At this rate, if they do not bring it back, I will wait until I can get superb USB-C headsets inexpensively... or most likely, Samsung S9 is going to be my next upgrade.

Loved Google's Nexus and even the Pixel 1, but they have gotten complacent, do not listen anymore and actually believe that copying Apple in any way shape or form makes them look better.

Can't wait for that Librem phone either. That one sounds better than anything else Google has to offer at least for the HN crowd, if not wider...
