Project MKULTRA

Given the sinister topic, I suppose I should report that this post fell off the front page only because users flagged it.

We don't know why users flag things, but I'd guess in this case it's a combo of (a) the story being a well-worn internet trope and (b) the submission being a follow-up a.k.a. quasidupe of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15930994, currently on the front page.

For follow-ups a.k.a. quasidupes, it's better to supply relevant links like this one via a comment in the original thread. That way we preserve the variety of HN's front page.

10 out of 10 times when we attempt to forcibly control other people's free will, we ultimately fail. How about leading by example and getting people to "bend" to our will because they choose to?

>Some historians assert creating a "Manchurian Candidate" subject through "mind control" techniques was a goal of MKUltra and related CIA projects. Alfred McCoy has claimed the CIA attempted to focus media attention on these sorts of "ridiculous" programs, so the public would not look at the primary goal of the research, which was developing effective methods of torture and interrogation.

So you've watched Manhunt: Unabom I presume ;)
