I think it's awesome that people are creating more games like this -- Minecraft is a huge success, which suggests there is a big market.

Thumbtack's gotten some good press recently because Sequoia just invested. (Very exciting.)

Our tech stack is a combination of Python, PHP (think Facebook, not Wordpress), Mongo, Postgres, AngularJS/Backbone.

Ping me (chris @) if you want to learn more, chat, etc. Happy to meet up for coffee if you're in SF.

San Francisco - Software Engineer

Thumbtack is a new way to hire local services. We connect over 250,000 small businesses -- from DJs to French tutors to wedding photographers and general contractors -- with new customers every day. Our vision is to be Amazon for the service industry. We want to make it as easy to hire a service online as it is to order a book.

We work out of a beautiful loft office in SOMA. Our in-house chef and food culture were featured in Inc. magazine. We also brew beer and play ping pong, but mostly we work really hard to make a difference in the lives of our customers.

I'm chris at thumbtack if you're interested in learning more.

martian··on A new Gmail inbox
I'm excited about this new direction for Gmail. I think their team makes some of the greatest products in the Google ecosystem.

But I have to say, reading this on mobile (Chrome for iOS) is next to impossible. The scrolling is all over the place. Thankfully ihackernews has a "view text" mode that makes this more sane.

martian··on Why I Develop For The Mac
Your comparison of Wizard with Refine is misguided. The two products do completely different things. Refine "refines" data into a usable form. Wizard is a stats and visualization tool for understanding an already-clean dataset. Last I checked, Refine actually runs a local web server, even if its client is in the browser, so it's not that different from a native app. Wizard also does incredible amounts of visualization that Refine doesn't do.

(disclaimer: I purchased Wizard a few months ago and have been exceptionally happy with it -- it's a brilliant product)

We're "Amazon for services". It's a big vision and our sights are set high. You can visit Thumbtack to hire any kind of person from home contractors and DJs to French tutors or wedding photographers. A quarter of a million small businesses around the country have joined the network. We've been in business for four years, are essentially profitable, and growing quickly.

We're looking for great engineers to join our team. H1B and new graduates welcome. We write in a mix of PHP, Python, and JavaScript. We value extensive A/B testing, excellent software engineering, bottom-up decision making, and collaborative development cycles.

The office is a fun place: we eat lunch together everyday (and dinners once a week), all food is cooked fresh by our in-house chef. We brew beer, hack on hardware, and play foosball in our spare time. The office is full of many warm-hearted and wonderful people who will be your friends as well as your colleagues.

martian··on Everything you need to understand to start with AngularJS
Yes, in your Angular app's config you can use the $interpolateProvider to adjust this. For example, to use [[ ]], just do this:

    var myApp = angular.module('myApp', [], function($interpolateProvider) {
        $interpolateProvider.startSymbol("[[");
        $interpolateProvider.endSymbol("]]");
    });

martian··on Git add -p: a powerful git feature
If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend taking a look at Stacked Git (stg). It adds a beautiful layer on top of git that helps you manage a "stack" of commits. Useful when you're working on a large change and want to think about smaller commits.

Combined with `git add -p`, stg is easily the most useful git tool in my toolbox.

martian··on Are Those Spidery Black Things On Mars Dangerous?
This is awesome! I love that Mars continues to baffle, astound, and fascinate us. Sometimes our 21st century hubris makes us think we are reaching some kind of peak knowledge, but moments like this prove that we yet know so little.

In particular, the geology of Mars in an incredibly fascinating topic. If you're looking for a good primer on the subject, I highly recommend Mapping Mars by Oliver Morton.

Mapping Mars contains a history of the science, highlighting the major contributors to the field and augmented with interviews from such notable science fiction authors as Kim Stanley Robinson. A good discussion is, for example, how much water exists on the planet. Consensus is now that there is water somewhere, but exactly how much water, where it sits, how it flows: great questions that are attacked with lucid explanations.

Hats off to NASA and human curiosity for this grand adventure.

martian··on How We Doubled Our Android Install Rate in One Hour
It helps that the design of the new Dwellable is very similar to the popular magazine Dwell. I wonder how much of the gain is due to brand recognition of a different brand?

- Similar san-serif lowercase font

- Large-format images of modern homes

- Almost-identical name :-)

Of course, you should always be A/B testing, and congrats on the conversion increase.

martian··on Vic Gundotra reports Google+ passing 100,000,000 monthly active users
Hi, nice to meet you.

In all seriousness, I think Google+ is a massive force. If you play the SEO game at all (and let's face it, most web companies do at least a little bit), then you have to pay attention to Google+ because it's showing up on search results. That makes those web companies more invested in getting their users to use Google+ and encourages adoption. Circular, strategic, very interesting to watch.

What strikes me about Dropbox and Airbnb more than anything is that they had incredibly strong growth strategies.

* Dropbox used rewards for more storage, as well as its fundamental file-sharing tools, to encourage users to sign up their friends and family.

* Airbnb gamed Craigslist [1] to encourage property owners to signup on Airbnb. With a strong supply of rental properties, Airbnb was able to build a true case for its value in the minds of travelers.

Am I the only one who wishes they would charge for this? I'd love to start using it, but I don't know what their business model is or how they'll be using my data, so I'm far less inclined to start. If it were 5 or 10$ (or even more?) I'd honestly and happily give it a try.

martian··on Show HN: Moqups - Vectorial mockups with HTML5 and SVG
Mockingbird looked great, but it hasn't been updated since 2010 as far as I'm aware.
martian··on MVC is dead, it's time to MOVE on
This pattern is fantastic.

We use a similar pattern that we internally call "Actions". An Action, in our parlance, is similar to the Command pattern from the Gang of Four. It can be invoked from anywhere and performs a single state change on a single model, or even multiple models (if several need to be updated at the same time, in the same transaction).

Separating Actions from Models was a huge step in writing readable code, and it's immediately clear what is happening in the system at any given time. Any Action can invoke any number of "child" actions, as well, to maintain encapsulation. For example: when a user registers on the site, we trigger a RegisterUser action, which in turn calls a CreateUser action and a LoginUser action.

Basically, we took any complicated method on our models and turned them into Action classes. Common concepts like database transactions, logging, event tracking, and so forth, can now be abstracted away, and don't need to be re-implemented in each model class. It's a huge productivity increase and a real win for software engineering.

I highly recommend this general approach to any large software system, and I'm grateful that we're all experimenting with things beyond MVC.

I'm not a user of the app or a fan, but I find this incredibly curious and sadly opaque.
