marsRoverDev··on Ask HN: What has been your most rewarding job or project and why?
Just outside of London.
marsRoverDev··on UK Pub chain JD Wetherspoon shuts its social media accounts
+1 kudos to the Wetherspoons digital team. The app is so good.
marsRoverDev··on Bitcoin has a huge scaling problem–Lightning could be the solution
Or perhaps replacing bitcoin with something that doesn't have fundamental flaws in its design.

Hence why a lot of us think it has no inherent value into the future. Of course, those in on the ponzi scheme will disagree with this sentiment.

marsRoverDev··on XPS 13 developer edition 7th generation available
On Ubuntu?

I dual boot with windows and while your statement is 100% factual with Ubuntu, it seems to be better handled on windows. This appears to be a software issue; admittedly one which I think that they should be dealing with as a matter of urgency.

At least disable the thing while typing, Dell.

marsRoverDev··on Qt 5.10 released
I know a former Qt dev who pronounced it 'cute', so I think it's a bit of a Gif vs Gif type situation.
marsRoverDev··on Show HN: Airport Locations from Around the World
I am super interested in that final point of yours. Any more details you can share?

Also, I owe you a beer in real life for enabling my app to exist.

Where do these guys get their data from?
marsRoverDev··on Dell’s gamble on Linux laptops has paid off
Are you on the US site or another? If I go to the US site, the option for an ubuntu flavour isn't there. If you go to the UK version:

http://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/laptop-and-2-in-1-pcs/xps-13/...

They are available at the end of the carousel showing the fitout options.

marsRoverDev··on How Not to Land an Orbital Rocket Booster [video]
They're probably only built to withstand forces associated with a nominal launch to save on weight; being able to withstand tipping over is unnecessary if you can avoid tipping over in the first place.
marsRoverDev··on European court rules companies must tell employees of email checks
"Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the requirements for valid consent have been made much stricter. Consent must be freely-given, specific, informed and revocable. The GDPR expressly states that, where there is an imbalance of power between the party giving consent and the party receiving it, consent will not be valid. In the employment context, it has long been acknowledged that there is such an imbalance between employer and employee. This means that it will be very difficult indeed for employers to rely on consent to process employees’ personal data under the GDPR."

So no, this is not legal from 2018.

marsRoverDev··on Verizon Up offers rewards in exchange for customers’ personal information
It is applicable if Verizon have a single EU citizen on their books, which they do; if the EU wish to pursue them I'm sure there is some way they could be held accountable.

I am not so sure that american companies can just "hide" from this, they are actually quite exposed. Delta airlines, for example, appear to be quite worried by it internally, and are making changes to suit.

marsRoverDev··on Verizon Up offers rewards in exchange for customers’ personal information
This is going to be a natural result of the incoming GDPR. My own startup will be doing something similar in order to remain compliant.

You now have to ask politely for people's data, and then give them a carrot in return for it.

marsRoverDev··on How the GDPR Will Disrupt Google and Facebook
Also, it is worded to say that it's 4% of global revenue for your parent company.

So there is no setting up an offshored tiny company to wear the liability - your parent company is on the hook, wherever that money may reside.

marsRoverDev··on Why is this C++ code faster than my hand-written assembly (2016)
Because apparently it's a rite of passage / hazing ritual to go on IRC / stackoverflow and be flamed for asking simple questions. It's been that way since the dawn of time.
marsRoverDev··on Amazon recalls eclipse glasses
Even when it is fulfilled by amazon you don't have any guarantee it's not fake.
marsRoverDev··on The Google memo isn’t sexist or anti-diversity, it’s science
Because it doesn't align with their worldview, and the wrong kind of thought must be quashed.
marsRoverDev··on The Loyal Engineers Steering NASA’s Voyager Probes Across the Universe
To give some kind of context on more "modern" methods, we use stupendous numbers of PDFs, DOORS for requirements traceability and tons of code commenting. At last count our project had 0.73 commenting lines per line of code (and we use Allman style bracketing).

We are also putting non mission-critical information in a Wiki; basically as a tl;dr of the more dense documentation.

marsRoverDev··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
I have the VicTsing 1080p USB C to HDMI dongle and it works fine on Ubuntu and Windows 10.

The standard dell one doesn't seem to work as well on both (yeah...).

marsRoverDev··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
I own a Dell XPS 13 and it seems to be fine build quality wise. Others have not been so lucky.

To be honest though, if I had the budget and Apple weren't being ridiculous with the specs I'd still consider a mac a much better development machine; specifically due to Adobe's refusal to port photoshop to ubuntu. If you do not have any need for photoshop, then XPS developer edition is much better value.

My only concern with the dell line is that drivers really are a problem. For some reason, the audio works perfectly fine under Ubuntu and is really half baked on Windows 10 (with the newest drivers from dell). It's like upside down bizarro world.

marsRoverDev··on Fire And Motion (2002)
I find it so valuable when people in this kind of position within the software industry admit their human faults.

It is so easy to fall into the trap of impostor syndrome. We all have these problems, and coupled with the potential complexity of some programming tasks it can feel overwhelming.

marsRoverDev··on Google relaunches Glass for businesses
In a world where people are forced to wear hi-vis and safety goggles, I don't think people on a shop floor are going to particularly care about looking good if it makes their job easier.

marsRoverDev··on Ask HN: Linux laptop with MacBook-like build quality
I own the 2017 XPS 13 and its trackpad is still horrendous, but not as bad as most windows machines.

OP would be well suited to bringing their mighty mouse along with them.

marsRoverDev··on How People Use Bike-Share Spaces vs. Parking Spots
If it's raining, you ride or take public transport there. Most employers and commercial centres offer showers for cyclists. If it's too cold, you wear more clothes. Admittedly, most places with good bike use do not have many hills. In cities which have good bike use I see people with trolley-like things attached to the front of their bike - which are useful for kids and also transporting things around. For two people out of town, getting to yours suddenly becomes their problem. Bringing back furniture from ikea is a nonissue as they offer delivery, and the cost of that is still way lower than owning a car. If you want to leave a city you can always rent a car. Getting from A-B faster than a bike will take you is a taxi job, though your mind readjusts.

In cities like copenhagen or amsterdam, bikes have enough mindshare that these concerns are pushed to the back of mind. The fact that you can remain healthy, passively, is a massive bonus; and the lack of cars is stark in comparison to other western countries.

Copenhagen is an extreme case of this; nothing much on the roads except for Teslas, some taxis and buses. Everyone else is on bikes.

marsRoverDev··on Welcoming Tech Talent from Around the World to France
I work for a major French engineering company, and have done so in France - I don't know what job OP has, but my company does NOT make you do this.

Also worth noting that I've had to do this in other countries; I'd say it's more problematic elsewhere.

I would however say that yes, the French bureaucracy is something else entirely. But if you are friendly to them and show your face things will happen faster.

marsRoverDev··on Wireless charging of moving electric vehicles overcomes major hurdle
Would this not apply a force against the direction of travel, thus making the car expend more energy than gained in order to maintain speed?

Correct me if I am wrong.

marsRoverDev··on Why are so many digital nomads becoming “e-Residents” of Estonia?
I'd like to hear from others in the EU who have gone this route. What are the pros, what are the cons, and is it possible to base yourself in another EU country and conduct all your business through this?
marsRoverDev··on HN is my new Facebook
