marrone12··on GPT-6 Astra
They still seem pretty horrible at writing. Overly complicated prose, weird phrasing, poorly structured paragraphs. I don't know why they're so bad at communicating, but I feel very confident that humans are still much better at writing than any of these LLM models are, regardless of how advanced they are in other areas.
marrone12··on Anthropic's best AI model struggles to attract users as cheaper tools thrive
I asked the same question to chatgpt, claude, and kimi and kimi gave the most sane answer. Part of me wonders if it has anything to do with having more chinese language structure in their dataset
marrone12··on Uber president says AI spending is getting 'harder to justify'
But they do use their models internally quite a bit. Claude code head talks about how he doesn't write any code himself anymore and just uses agents to do everything. So they are using it themselves.

marrone12··on Palestinian boy, 12, describes how Israeli forces killed his family in car
It's not collateral damage in the gaza war. This was a family in the west bank, where there is no hamas and no "war", that was gunned down in cold blood for no reason. Not even presenting a threat. I hope one day you are able to find compassion.
marrone12··on GPT-5.4
Yep. There was something outside of coding that gpt was plain wrong about (had to do with setting up an electric guitar) and I couldn't convince it that it was wrong.
marrone12··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
I remember sitting on my friend's couch drinking beer when they announced the iPad and debating if it was ever going to be popular. Time marches on.
marrone12··on Zed editor switching graphics lib from blade to wgpu
Same, except for me Zed is one of the only editors that has emacs keybindings!
marrone12··on Retiring GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini in ChatGPT
Advertising is not a recent evolution of capitalism, it's a foundational piece of it. Whatever you do as a job would not exist if there was no one marketing it. This hostility seems insane.

marrone12··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
Generally when running these kinds of tests you measure for further down the funnel metrics than sign ups. It's obvious sign ups would increase. In all the tests I've done around this, you look either at revenue or engagement over a longer term.
marrone12··on Apple says iPhones will switch to USB-C chargers to comply with new EU law
They do from MFi certified cables. You have to pay apple a licensing fee. and the non licensed cables will sometimes give you an error.
marrone12··on Apple says iPhones will switch to USB-C chargers to comply with new EU law
I've only had 1 lightning cable die on me in over 10 years of owning iPhones, and it was a heavily abused cable.
marrone12··on Building a Startup on Clojure
One thing to note about coding in Clojure — if you never learned Java, you hit a wall at a certain point. I only know scripting languages and I had fun writing little scripts in clojure, but at a certain point the lack of java knowledge and it's class system / standard libraries held me back from doing more serious things.

marrone12··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
The second point doesn't make sense at all. Consumers vastly prefer standalone VR, and it was always the future.

For the first point, I'll give you that they prefer playing on their own platform. But they haven't "broken" anything. While yes you do need a software layer, e.g. Revive, you can still play steam games on oculus and oculus games on an index. And you have no idea whether that would have happened anyway as one of these companies got bigger.

Google used to say "do no evil" and now they don't, and they didn't get acquired before they changed. These things just happen.

marrone12··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
What exactly did they "do" to oculus besides give them a ton of funding and try to bring them into the mainstream?
marrone12··on Ask HN: How can we lay people off without cruelty?
One, be as transparent as possible, as early as possible. Hopefully your company has not been hiding that there are financial problems so that it won't come as a huge surprise that layoffs are happening. If you haven't done this yet, please start communicating. You do not necessarily need to tell the whole company that layoffs are happening, but you do need to tell them that this might happen.

Two, avoid saying anything about how hard this was for you. They do not care.

It is definitely best to tell people in person, and individually. I don't have any advice as to how to do so in a small space. It is for the best to restrict access to sensitive systems once a person is laid off, but you can keep them access to slack or email so people can say goodbye if they'd like.

Better to be honest, just say that you had an illness and you couldn't work. They won't ask you for details and if they do, say that you don't feel comfortable discussing.

Yes. You link to a random 3rd party javascript, which they could change what it loads at any point.
