marricks··on Niantic lays off 230 employees, cancels NBA and Marvel games
I think it's interesting to consider games that took off so wildly they literally killed/stifled the genre.

Has anything similar matched World of Warcraft? It was a cultural phenomena when it launched and so many big studios tried to capture it, but none did to that level. It's more niche now.

Pokemon Go seems like that but to an extreme. Maybe it's the traction required for IRL video games to take off, maybe it's just Pokemon was definitively one of the best franchises for that style of game.

marricks··on Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way
> And then when an actual accident occurs your response is ineffective.

Nothing can be actual human care and attention. Everything can break and no automated system made by careful people is exempt from needing that.

I'm reminded that late into development of a Pixar movie servers crashed, work was lost, and the automated back up system failed. The only thing which saved it was that an artist took a copy of the project home to work on it.

I love how, if you do view it accurately, it just makes every other white look washed out and grey in comparison. Our visual system is just one big comparison machine.

Sounds like 401ks are very efficient for fund managers. Maybe that’s what they meant?
marricks··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
> 99.99% of reddit users have no idea who spez is

That's why people do things like black outs and protests, so people can learn who people are and what is happening.

> probably wouldn't care if they learned about his shenanigans

That's information is associated with protests, so people can decide if they care.

I can actually understand how most wouldn't care about this. This change isn't that important to me except in that's it's another stepping stone on the death of the free and open web. Twitter API, Reddit API, real ID on Facebook, probably countless other things. What we expected to have in the 2010's is going fast.

This is may be to there benefit, as it gives them another 5 years to say “oh we’ll be ahead soon” without actually releasing anything.

marricks··on Why the Dvorak keyboard didn't take over the world (2014) [video]
This sounds very alluring but having to deal with setting up VIM in every environment or going to a new environment with VIM not set up sounds so painful.

I imagine the native VIM bindings would be atrociously positioned in DVORAK

marricks··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
And what is my next sentence?

> Also not saying others haven't done that, but it's an ecosystem and having the talent for a thing.

I'm saying Apple is testing out their own implementations of things and getting the people needed to do it well before launch.

Just please actually read what I'm saying.

marricks··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Oh I am definitely not saying they came up with any of that. I'm just saying they were laying the groundwork for their own ecosystem.

And sure, desktop mirroring is in every headset but sidecar isn't "plug a cable in and mirror your screen" it's project your screen to another device you own without any cables. That's more attractive for someone with a few apple devices.

Also not saying others haven't done that, but it's an ecosystem and having the talent for a thing.

marricks··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
So many technologies Apple has launched in the past 5 years seemed nifty & weird but were all being built to lead up to this:

- Spatial Audio - Is any one a huge fan of this? It doesn't matter a ton outside of AR but matters greatly within it

- Side Car - mirroring to a local apple device. It's useful as a second monitor but... mirroring your iPad or MacBook into VR and typing on it. Super useful.

- FaceID - is it really better than using your finger to unlock? I think it is now but it wasn't initially... This face scanning tech is an entry point into the whole "face as an avatar" integration into their ecosystem. Also keeping a secure local image of your face on device.

- Separating a subject from scene used live in iPhone "portrait" view and in photos to clip out w/ neural engine - sure that's fun, but in AR this is a lot more useful for presenter view they showed.

That's off the top of my head. This totally could fail but piece by piece Apple has been building and trying out the tech for this in their ecosystem. If it fails, it won't be because of a buggy ecosystem.

Actually, I still find side car buggy so it definitely could/will be buggy, but, it is a broad integration and feature set they've been working towards for a while.

marricks··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
Meta has a social network, but they don't really have an electronic ecosystem connecting them. Mac has a social network (anyone with an iPhone arguable) and an operating system. This might give them the edge needed in integration to do well.

Additionally, apple fan boys will pay a few grand for a high end device. So the whole "glasshole" issue from Google will be less of a thing. It's easier to see where they are coming from here is what I'm saying.

I think the nay sayers sure have reasonable nays to say, but I can see how it'll be popular to Apple's core "creative pro with pro level pocket change." Growing beyond that is definitely anyones guess and needs a "VisionLite"

marricks··on Statement on AI Risk
Got it, thank you for the clarification!
marricks··on Statement on AI Risk
They didn’t become such a wealthy group by letting competition foster. I have no doubt they believe they could be doing the right thing but I also have no doubt they don’t want other people making the rules.

Truth be told, who else really does have a seat at the table for dictating such massive societal change? Do you think the copy editor union gets to sit down and say “I’d rather not have my lunch eaten, I need to pay my rent. Let’s pause AI usage in text for 10 years.”

These competitors banded together and put out a statement to get ahead of any one else doing the same thing.

marricks··on Amazon corporate workers plan walkout next week over return-to-office policies
That is such an incredibly obvious take I somehow never thought of. Thanks!

Not to mention, his main consumer would be exactly that white collar worker who'd rather not drive to the office.

It's a sort of sick inversion of Henry Ford's

> "I want my employees to be able to buy my car"

to...

> "I want all employees to be forced to own one"

marricks··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
100% agree. It does link to an actual paper which is a step up from blogspam

https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevD.107.084042

marricks··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
The actual article linked has a better title and the abstract is probably sufficient for anyone interested in the subject: https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevD.107.084042

The given title is just flat out misleading.

marricks··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
Article states that solitions are not black holes but only seem like black holes from a distance. Also they are hypothesized from string theory but haven’t ever been seen, probably because they’d appear the same as black holes except up close?

Title should be updated to something like: “A theorized defect in space time that appears to be a black hole”

The Verge at least found it's battery life claims lackluster and windows a real impediment to mobile gaming.

But for emulators... yeah I' imagine it'd be quite good if you don't mind a lower battery life.

marricks··on Apple previews Live Speech, Personal Voice, and more new accessibility features
Very good point: if things changed drastically they could change drastically.
marricks··on Apple previews Live Speech, Personal Voice, and more new accessibility features
Ok, sure, but surely you see how it is that much harder to do?

Also since Apple is built around selling expensive devices and services you could also see why they’d have much less incentive to spy and collect data than, say, Google or Facebook?

The cynicism of “everything is equally bad so why care” is destructive.

marricks··on Get started making music
> If you want to play music, there's never been a better time.

People used to learn from… people. In fact, many people prefer that still.

And I’d say, I’d rather have a dozen friends who play music and actually want to hear my music than have the potential to get a million fans I’d end up rather not meeting because it’s just awkward and unnatural.

marricks··on Get started making music
Guitars, mandolins, just singing together…
marricks··on Get started making music
Half of households had a piano:

https://daily.jstor.org/what-player-pianos-meant-to-american...

So… good point it was middle class status symbol, but a huge number still had access.

My real point was music creation was more a part of people’s daily lives.

marricks··on Get started making music
I tried this a few years ago and it was addictive and amazing. Highly recommend.

I’d also like to tangent to say: music used to be a much bigger part of our lives. Before the radio a piano was a household staple. Kids would learn, family’s would play and sing to each other. We’ve largely given that up.

Imagining hearing one of your family members just start singing to themselves without any background music, does that feel uncomfortable? Would you sing along?

I think to many the answer is clear, music, as well as many other endeavors are something to now be enjoyed but not created. And oh boy do we get to enjoy the “best” music and “best” films and “best” books on demand.

And along the way we lost the large bits of ourselves which created and enjoyed together. So, in short, 10/10 would do the tutorial again.

marricks··on Big oil helped shape Stanford’s latest climate-research focus
I don’t think is one of those cases where it’s helpful to have everyone “have a seat at the table.”

The oil industry would make more money than anyone else at that table and have outsized influence.

They also have a history of misleading the public and outright lying about climate change.

marricks··on Google DeepMind CEO says some form of AGI possible in a few years
I really wonder what the next AI winter will be like.

Edit:

Perhaps OpenAI becomes a major tech player and we just see a cooling off of other AI investments as LLM becomes a known in terms of its strengths and weaknesses. Its abilities reach a natural limit which is still generally very useful.

Or maybe folks realize the degree of lies/mistruths inherent in its content is actually unmanageable and can’t be improved. After the hype wears off what it will be used for gets greatly curtailed and we see a big contraction.

And there’s so many interesting side tracks along the way. I’m hoping for another AOL Time Warner style shit show of a merger. That’d be fun and could really happen down any path.

marricks··on Why did Google Brain exist?
Crazy that her boss and people she mentored all loved her. It’s almost like the system screwed her and she’s rightly angry at it.

I get it, easier to type cast her as an angry black woman though!
