to add, :x is still [shift;xENTER] so 4 key presses also!

marliechiller··on What Is Vim?
ZZ is less key presses - :wq is [shift;wq], the keys of which are spread all over the keyboard vs [shiftzz] which is much less traversing, quicker and can be done with little and ring finger with no physical trouble
marliechiller··on What Is Vim?
I dont understand why people even do that when ZZ is easier xD

Just in case - have you tried directing the beams down a bit? Not sure what the situation is on that model but there is a dial to the right of my wheel (right hand drive) which controls for this. Maybe worth investigating if you have something similar
marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Possibly. I will investigate that route as why not at this stage.

My most annoying symptom is when I exercise, sleep the day after and subsequent couple of nights (not the night of, strangely), is completely compromised. Really shallow, hot sweats, waking up multiple times etc. Im trying to understand if this is dysautonomia or PEM at the moment. Most of my fatigue follows from having this disrupted sleep I think and I dont have flu like symptoms typical of PEM, but it does feel like im having an allergic reaction. Very strange

marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Yes - this is pretty much the exact protocol ive been following. My heart health is now largely back to normal. Lingering symptoms are now fatigue, restless sleep and occasional brain fog. I'm doing some self experimentation on how to deal with those
marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Thanks for the advice - do you use melatonin every night or just nights where you know youre going to be restless?
marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
can you explain the dietary advice like cutting out gluten? is that to reduce inflammatory responses?
marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Sorry to hear about your divorce. I found the brain fog to be one of the worst factors in day to day life, especially with work. Thoughts of "did I miss this bug because of brain fog or was this something anyone would have missed" often run through my mind. Its hard to get people that havent experienced anything like this to really understand and the self doubt can cause a lot of stress. Sometimes its akin to early signs of dementia.

I cant offer much support but youre not alone in suffering this

marliechiller··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Really resonates with me. I was a very active (4-5x a week weightlifting & 1-2x cardio) person until about 13 months ago when I got an extremely mild cold. It was barely noticeable and I continued with exercise. 2 weeks later, I still hadnt shaken the fatigue that normally comes with a cold and in fact, it got worse. After a month I sought deeper medical investigation and eventually ended up seeing a cardiologist as I now had palpatations and could hardly walk up a flight of stairs without being out of breath.

I had myocarditis, caused by an infection, likely a covid strain but unproven as it was so mild I never thought to get tested. No exercise for at least 3 months and lots of R & R. I did this but I've never fully recovered. I still get pretty bad post exertional malaise, cant tolerate caffeine or alcohol and my sleep is terrible - especially after pushing too hard. Extremely shallow and I wake up a lot. The real nail in the coffin is something about heavy lifting really tips me over the edge. I can do some (very) light cardio infrequently on good days.

Doctors have been next to useless in helping, I guess because there isnt any real treatment for what is probably a multi factor systemic problem.

Whats been fascinating is my garmin fenix watch has been able to track how I'm feeling to a T. HRV readings have been particularly helpful in knowing whether I should be really dialling back activity on a given day or allowing myself to push a bit more. Ive fallen from a baseline of 85-95ms average to 40-60ms average which is really interesting. I'd love to see what macro analysis of their data would reveal around illnesses such as mine. The sleep functionality has also been quite illumunating. Getting 8 hours used to reset me to 100 body battery, now im lucky to get back to 80 after 11 hours sleeping.

Im not alone and I'm lucky enough to have a mild case but it still sucks and has robbed me of a big chunk of my previous life and personality. Im really hoping stories like mine begin to trigger trials and further treatments.

marliechiller··on Ask HN: How do you communicate in a remote startup?
I found this can have negative consequences for more timid employees, junior hires or new joiners. People dont like sounding stupid in public, especially not in front of people they dont know. No matter how much of a safe culture you instil, human nature tends to prevail here and you get the loudest personalities being the the users of those public channels whilst others either dont ask those important questions or seek back channels anyway

The great thing about opinions, as youve pointed out with books, is that you can disregard them. Personally, I agree that PHM was not particularly good compared with The Martian, but to each their own.
marliechiller··on Sci-fi books that you may never have heard of, but definitely should read
No mention of Peter Watts' Blindsight? That book changed all sorts of notions of first contact and consciousness for me. I'm still thinking about it to this day. Absolute must read for anyone concerned with such things
marliechiller··on Developing with Docker
Arise NixOS acolytes, arise!

All jokes aside, to expand on this for others, you can fix a lot of dependencies but as soon as you start your dockerfile with a FROM, youre hiding a bunch of dependencies which you no longer control, behind that command. An example would be:

FROM tiangolo/uvicorn-gunicorn-fastapi

If tiangolo decides to update anything in the base image defined here, your build is now different to how it was before without really knowing

marliechiller··on Researchers find Alzheimer's-like brain changes in long Covid patients
Im 9 months into long covid. Just about recovered enough to start doing light cardio again. But during the first 5 months or so my brain was literally scrambled. At Christmas, simple trivia games were impossible. Recall of certain words that were usually available to me just didnt happen. It was awful, especially trying to keep my new job at the time. I also found myself doing things that I'd never done before, like leaving a tap running or heating a pan full of vegetables without any water in, as I'd forgotten I was midway though something.

Gradually, I began to get better, and this was in lockstep with my garmin's reporting of my HRV which had massively declined immediately after onset. At my worst, walking up one flight of stairs or showering would have me out of breath and send my heart racing.

Before all of this, I was an extremely fit young person (very high VO2 max and exercised daily). Im only just starting to get a resemblance of my former life back and I fortunately only had a mild case but it has really woken me up to the seriousness of post viral syndromes. I now actively avoid _any_ sick people, no matter how mild - my initial infection barely registered as a sore throat and sniffles.

I hope we really ramp up investigations into this field as I know there are a lot of people suffering in silence being fobbed off by archaic medical thinking in this area of medicine. Who knows what long term lasting damage has been done to my body

| listening to your own body is not a bad strategy.

Is it this strictly true? Are people that are overweight not just "listening to their body" when they overeat? I feel its not as simple as that. If we always listened to our bodies we would never exercise beyond the first instance of becoming tired for example.

I think theres mounting evidence that covid can have dramatic long term effects on people without them fully realising. More obviously, the long covid epidemic is much more significant than people really realise and more work needs to be done to bring this into the spotlight
