markx2··on What contributing to Open-source is, and what it isn't
"Only when you use code can you contribute meaningfully to it."

I disagree.

I started using WordPress in January 2004. I was invited to join Automattic in 2006. I never once wrote any code or even tried.

What I did do was a huge amount of Support in the wordpress.org forums, and I write the first guides covering everything from changing your password in the database (there was no other option at the time), how to insert adsense, lots of CSS stuff and more. I know of other current Automattic employees who came that same forum route.

Code is needed obviously, but you also need people who will support others in using the program you create.

When I started in the forums I would see the then current WP devs replying to questions. Matt in particular would reply, but he replied as a dev would talk to another dev. He was always technically correct but he wasn't really good at explaining. I - and others - could explain in a way that people understood.

I would like to think that the very positive and helpful way the forums were run was a helpful step when people were looking to what blogging software to use at that time.

Disinformation, carefully used, would be my first line of investigation.

As an aside, the Humble Bundle Choice releases were being reliably leaked. Until this month ... https://redd.it/1bqpp2l - so I suspect HB did the same, and carefully distribued info to establish the mole's identity.

I have never used Siri despite owning iPhone, Mac

I have an Echo but it's use is generally "Alexa play LBC" as I do housework.

If though Siri can beat this, please do tell me

"Alexa, what noise does a hamster make"

markx2··on I Know the secret to the quiet mind. I wish I'd never learned it (2021)
As I said, there is no research.

But there is also much anecdotal evidence it helps.

markx2··on I Know the secret to the quiet mind. I wish I'd never learned it (2021)
I got the piercing after reading something somewhere that a daith had helped someone else. I am no stranger to bodyart / piercings and I have a passing interest / experience in acupuncture / acupressure. So the idea it could help appeared worth a shot, so I went for it. I did not think "this will work", but hey, nothing ventured ..

I would not describe a daith as an aesthetic piercing. It is very discreet so not a 'showing off' type. The placement also does not lend itself to changing the usual steel ball closure ring which is initially placed. I did not think through what I would do if it did not work because I am visibily modified and this extra was a nothing.

My daughter has no bodyart. Standard ear-gun piercing, one in each ear. She took some convincing, but all I could say was "This worked for me, I'll pay, there is nothing to lose and much to gain". And it worked.

What I do not know is "If I removed the metal, would I get migraines back?" and I'm not about to try.

Here is something to try: My late wife would have bad headaches. If I squeezed the web between her big toe and the next one the pain would fade after a few minutes and if I continued the pain would stop.

markx2··on I Know the secret to the quiet mind. I wish I'd never learned it (2021)
After decades of migraines I was diagnosed with Chronic Daily Migraines. I was prescribed a 'under the tongue' triptan which if the migraine aura arrived during the day worked some of the time. If I woke with the migraine at 10/10 pain level than I lost the full day.

One of my daughters also had weekly migraines, lost a day at work each time.

I got a Daith piercing in my right ear - my migraines originated on the right side of my head. Yes the piercing stung, but the next day I had no migraine. The constant pain had just stopped. This was maybe 7-8 years ago. I very rarely get odd migraine symptoms - vision feels off, head feels woolly - but no pain at all.

I convinced my daughter to have a Daith. She now doesn't even get regular headaches.

Anecdotal though this is, I would suggest looking into getting this piercing. It is discreet. There is no formal research I am aware of but for this sample of two it was a huge positive.

markx2··on Beeper acquired by Automattic
They approved the tumblr deal.

Matt promised targets.

Every target was missed and financially the deal was a failure.

The board then stopped any further acquisitions.

I would guess that texts / beeper were cheap and that Matt is looking at a very very long time to profit. He was once a fan of the 'pizza/team' ratio that Bezos/Amazon pushed, so maybe that's where he is looking.

markx2··on Adventures Making Vegemite
I was first introduced to Marmite by way of Twiglets.

I love marmite, I loved twiglets. Then I was forced to go gluten-free. That ruled out both Marmite and Twiglets, also the default Vegemite.

I've yet to find gluten-free Twiglets, but thankfully there are gluten-free alts for Marmite and a GF Vegemite. As a Brit, Marmite takes the crown though.

markx2··on Deep Aphantasia: a visual brain with minimal influence from priors?
I would have to zoom out / pan around. I am unable to have any sort of vision of what I want/need.
markx2··on Deep Aphantasia: a visual brain with minimal influence from priors?
If I cannot see - with my eyes there and then - a scribble happens.

To sort of expand: I'm old enough that a diagnosis makes zero difference. But it does explain so much.

When misophonia became a thing it explained so much of my reactions to certain noises, that I was not alone.

Just knowing that others are experiencing the same removes some of that aloneness.

markx2··on Deep Aphantasia: a visual brain with minimal influence from priors?
Some months, maybe a couple of years ago I realised that I have no "mind's eye". For example I know I have grandchildren but I cannot visualise them. I cannot visualise a neighbour, or food, or a location. That this happens is odd but I can live with it.

More recently I was thinking about gaming, and more specifically Prison Architect, Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, City Skylines (all of which I own but get nowhere with) and other games where you play, you fail, you plan, you repeat. Even Minecraft.

Someone else - I presume - plays, fails, learns, repeats and so gain a step toward mastery of the game. (I accept from reading that mastery of DF isn't happening soon). I presume that players visualise mistakes and visualise workrounds. I cannot do that, I do not know how.

I have thousands of hours in gaming but I cannot recall them visually, so I respond in-game to what is happening in-game. That may not make sense. There will be some learning but in a non-visual way.

Is this aphantasia? I have no idea and I'm not about to be diagnosed.

I do have vivid and lucid dreaming but ask me to close my eyes and visualise an apple and nope, doesn't happen.

Edit: looks like the number is 851

markx2··on Poker roguelite Balatro is a hit, but a mobile release will show its true power
Been playing this for a while now and I cannot decide if my knowledge of poker - high school days well spent - is getting in the way. It very well may be.

Very much rec the game.

From the reddit faq: "Why did you start working on Balatro?

I have been making games and simulations since I was young, and it has been a hobby that I have always been able to turn to. Making games makes me feel at peace, even the ones that will never see the light of day. A couple years ago I was inspired by SNKRX and Luck be a Landlord to create a roguelike from a tried-and-true real life mechanic I know people already love - picking cards from your hand and playing them. I originally made Balatro for 3 of my close friends, and their feedback and support made the game into what it is today."

markx2··on Stop Serving the Compliment Sandwich
In my last job I had a 'manager' who would give me the 'shit sandwich' - which was precisely what this describes.

In the weekly zoom meeting I would wait for the shit. I didn't hear any praise, my ears were geared up solely for the shit to hit. There never really was any - I was doing my job just fine - but because of this delivery method if he did say something good I just didn't hear it.

A subsequent 'manager' would pick out issues immediately (they were rare), we'd talk, agree and then move on.

markx2··on [dead]
In 2004 I started using WordPress and helping in the support forums. My site url was posted many many times all over the place as I wrote and hosted the first WP Support guides.

Many people began experiencing comment spam, and pre-Akismet there were many solutions from a tarpit to moderation word lists. Curiously though I got no spam. Zero. Eventually, after seeing the size of the problem hitting other sites I checked the access logs.

My blog was at http://example.com/T2/

The logs showed I was being battered by spam, but they were hitting http://example.com/t2

That uppercase letter had been inadvertently saving me for months. Of course the spammers wised up but I found it amusing at the time.

markx2··on Telegram: Social media giant or the new 'dark web'?

markx2··on I accidentally deleted a bad game revision from MAME
Ah yes - a piece of blu-tac and timing the swap just right.

For anyone else:

The lid of the PS had a small protusion which pressed down a button when the lid closed. The game could not be started with the lid open. So a piece of blu-tac was used to depress that button.

The first thing the PS did when loading a game was to check somewhere on the game disc for some code. This code confirmed the disc was genuine so the trick was to put any genuine game in the drive, use the blu-tac, start the console and at a certain point, after the code had been read but before the game loaded and at that point pull the genuine disc and insert the pirate disc you had.
