markus92··on Scientists glue two proteins together, driving cancer cells to self-destruct
It's mostly the PR department of universities that boast about those big discoveries. Researchers themselves usually try to add some nuance to it.
markus92··on 'I lost £165k to fraud in an hour' – customers say they were let down by Revolut
There were similar issues with Bunq in The Netherlands. You (or a scammer) could turn a savings account into a checking account pretty much immediately with one code, and then drain it in the matter of minutes. Lot of people lost their life savings over it and of course no one you could reach out to to rectify the situation. All other Dutch banks have waiting periods for this. E.g. ING has a four hour waiting period to increase your transaction limit, just so it buys time when potential scams are happening.

Of course it's easy to blame the user for this as they provide codes and stuff, but when one bank has this issue so much more than it should have given its amount of customers, something else is going on.

markus92··on DOJ accuses Visa of monopoly that affects price of 'nearly everything’
SEPA is well established all across the eurozone though, even in countries with considerable legacy infrastructure.
markus92··on More than 100M Americans' private information leaked in data breach
You mean like GDPR?
markus92··on Unconventional Case Study of Neoadjuvant Oncolytic Virotherapy for Breast Cancer
The really interesting part of this study (besides the obvious self-experimentation) is that she underwent subtype conversion from TN to HER2+ tumor and thus could use Trastuzumab.
markus92··on California lawmakers got ticket freebies as they cracked down on Ticketmaster
Zero.
markus92··on California lawmakers got ticket freebies as they cracked down on Ticketmaster
Same here, as employee at a Dutch semi-government institution. €50 is the max we're allowed to take with manager approval.
markus92··on How the electricity markets respond to a nuclear trip
When there’s a load imbalance on the grid (more load than capacity), the turbines physically slow down as inertial energy is extracted from them. This causes the grid frequency to drop. It takes some time to ramp up production and speed up the turbine etc.
markus92··on How the EU Weaponizes Regulation to Extract Billions from American Tech
Some of the big tech mentioned are fined a lot heavier than others on some of those regulations. For example, Apple has barely received anything under the GDPR. Why? They don't collect unnecessary user data with shady "consent". Microsoft also doesn't seem to be struggling too much with the DMA or DSA, just the usual anti-trust stuff they always seem to get themselves in. But their gatekeeper obligations don't seem to be a problem whatsoever.

The EU has been clear for years they're fed up with the behavior of big tech with some of those things. If you don't want to listen, you have to feel the consequences. Easy as that.

markus92··on Show HN: A source-available billing system I've spent 18 months building
Same with Dutch, Google Translate quality if not worse.
markus92··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
All major US airlines have put in a total ground stop. No flights can take off anymore.
markus92··on The unexpected poetry of PhD acknowledgements
At my faculty, we always "joked" that the acknowledgements were the most read section of any thesis. First thing everyone did when they got handed a new thesis was looking to see who was mentioned in the acknowledgements.

(we joked about it, but there's a grain of truth to it. the chapters themselves were usually published long ago already and only people in your specific field would care about them anyways).

markus92··on Strategy for EU Bootstrapping Hardware Startups: Don't Sell to Anyone in EU
Can you name an example of someone being shut down cus of that in Germany (or anywhere else in the EU really)? I honestly can't think of a single regulation that would apply in the EU and not apply in the US for some reason or another for this use case.
markus92··on Strategy for EU Bootstrapping Hardware Startups: Don't Sell to Anyone in EU
What does the author mean here when referring to customs when shipping products from within the EU to other EU countries? The EU has a customs union...

The VAT per country can be a bit of a pain but is a solved problem (Shopify, Amazon, can all take care of it easily).

markus92··on Ask HN: Freelancer's Dilemma – Client Won't Pay Despite Clear Agreement
Might be a pain. If they have any EU presence, it'd be easier.
markus92··on How I turned seemingly 'failed' experiments into a successful PhD
Four first author publications, yes. University guidelines say three, but in practice they'd like to see four or five to get it approved.
markus92··on How I turned seemingly 'failed' experiments into a successful PhD
When I started my PhD, they were clear: four publications is a degree. That's the goal. Understanding is a bonus but doesn't get the title!
markus92··on Overview of JPEG XL
JPEG 2000 is completely wavelet based, no DCT either, and it’s been around for a while. It’s used a bit in medical imaging where ringing artifacts are a big no no.
markus92··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
My uncle ran a bike shop, the amount of bikes that came in with broken displays cus of water damage is high. Usually it’s warranty.
markus92··on MLow: Meta's low bitrate audio codec
In my personal experience, Whatsapp's calling is subpar compared to Facetime audio, Skype or VoWIFI even. Higher latency, lower sound quality and very sensitive to spotty connections.
markus92··on MLow: Meta's low bitrate audio codec
I think you’re misreading OP, as he says 380 packets per minute, not second. That would give you an overhead of 253 bytes per second, sounds a lot more reasonable.
markus92··on Intel is trucking a 916k-pound 'Super Load' across Ohio to its new fab
Works the other way about piracy or drugs or anything.
markus92··on Full body scans for the people
But any tumor protocol does.
markus92··on Full body scans for the people
Gadolinium-based contrast (which you'll need for any scan worth their salt) is not completely risk free, so not entirely true. And claustrophobia is a bit more common than people think.
markus92··on Getting the Grid to Net Zero
At certain power levels, reactive effects take over. Takes more energy to charge up the transmission lines 50 or 60 times a second, than it actually can transmit. Also, no skin effect.
markus92··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Same with The Netherlands (not legally, but all schools have agreed to implement these rules).
markus92··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
It's mandatory if you've never been to the hospital/clinic before, it's for insurance purposes. See https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/identificatieplicht...
markus92··on Xzbot: Notes, honeypot, and exploit demo for the xz backdoor
Stuxnet?
markus92··on Would you use a government-issued ID to prove your identity online?
No, (semi-)government only by law, plus health care providers.
markus92··on Can We Get Kids Off Smartphones?
