Thanks for sharing your experience. Can you talk about the business aspect? Like I assume up to now you're having trouble getting additional funding? What worked and didn't work? What's the current direction?
marktangotango··on Launch HN: Sweep (YC S23) – A bot to create simple PRs in your codebase
Finally! My VP of engineering keeps saying I'm not making enough github commits, this is the solution I've been waiting for!

This is sarcasm, but I did have a VP who tracked commit frequency for a while. And people heard about it if they weren't commiting enough.

I would like to buy the same pre made meals and heat it up at my home, at a reduced cost. The quality isn't bad, I'd even say "good" in some cases and my kids like the chicken tenders. Kind of a Papa Murphy's take and bake casual dining thing. Does this exist?
marktangotango··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
Does this mean that instances that happen to have the popular communities gets hosed on hosting costs? Or stop submissions? Meanwhile "CommunityA" on other instances starve for content and subscribes. If that's true, communities should be federated as well. Like a user should be able to subscribe to "CommunityA" and get that content from all instances who have a "CommunityA".

Or is that totally off?

marktangotango··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
I've been exploring the fediverse options like kbin and lemmy and I just don't see it. Maybe someone can explain. If one lemmy instance has a really popular community, say "Memes" how can that scale? There could be millions of posts and terabytes of data. Then if multiple lemmy instances have their own "Memes" communities, that's balkanized and a user would have to subscribe to each instances "Memes" community?

Or are communities federated also? Like all instances "Memes" communities get pulled together? Examining [1] that appears to not be the case.

This one of the main things about cobol people don't understand; all memory is statically allocated, there is no dynamic memory allocation. Well there can be, but not generally. No call stack, no heap. In reality, cobol, the 85 standard and before was really very primitive. The new standards have changed this obviously, but no one uses those. The terminology this person would have understood is "working storage".

Can you relate a specific example of commercial tech the "jaw dropped" some DoD officials? Like what was the tech and what was the venue?
marktangotango··on I decided not to commercialize nbdev
What is nbdev?

> nbdev is an innovative software development framework for Python that embraces literate and exploratory programming. I worked on nbdev from 2020-2023 with Jeremy Howard and, later, Wasim Lorgat. I had the privilege and excitement of exploring the boundaries of developer tools and exploratory programming while working with very talented software engineers. In addition to creating a tool many people enjoyed, I enjoyed using nbdev for personal and professional projects.

So I still wasn't sure and navigated to nbdev.fast.ai:

> Create delightful software with Jupyter Notebooks

Ah "nb" is notebook and we're talking about jupyter notebooks here!

marktangotango··on Why is Betelgeuse glowing so brightly and behaving so strangely?
How did that turn out? Were they acquitted? I've noticed in other cases that Italian prosecutors seem have an unusual amount of latitude, or is that normal?
marktangotango··on UCLA computer grad constructs “crown jewel of cryptography”
For those, like me, wondering what this is about;

> Program obfuscation would enable a host of useful applications: For instance, you could use an obfuscated program to delegate particular tasks within your bank or email accounts to other individuals, without worrying that someone could use the program in a way it wasn’t intended for or read off your account passwords (unless the program was designed to output them).

I relate this to cracking; run a program and watch the memory, see where the password is checked and edit the binary at that location to bypass. So this level obfuscation would make that impossible? Seems like magic honestly.

marktangotango··on Apple announces multibillion deal with Broadcom to make components in the USA
Not SoCs, but radio gear:

> The multi-year agreement with Broadcom will see Apple use 5G radio frequency and wireless connectivity components, including FBAR filters, that are designed and manufactured in the U.S.

marktangotango··on A mental health crisis in science
Whenever these things come up, I'm always grateful toward my past self who opted out of academia and pursued industry. The entire system of placing your fate in the hands of disinterested, self motivated, senior faculty and researchers seemed very risky to me at the time. Plus the money has been nice. But I do feel like I missed out on some intellectual growth. YMMV.
marktangotango··on The Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies of the 1970s
I think this is more of a listicle for those not familiar with how utterly bizarre 70's scifi movies could be. Underrated by non-genre movie fans specifically. One curiosity not listed was "Capricorn One", one of OJ Simpsons movies. Another is the first Mad Max which squeaks in at 1979.

Another genre that could use similar treatment is the 70's disaster movies like Towering Inferno, Airport and their ilk.

marktangotango··on The skills gap for Fortran looms large in HPC
It's an interesting idiom you see in hpc and scientific computing that can be jarring when first encountered. "Codes" can be read as program or library.
marktangotango··on Film studios lose bid to unmask Reddit users who wrote comments on piracy
As someone who's been commenting on various sites for 20 years, I consider my comment history to be the very clearest representation of self and who I am. Like if my progeny ever wanted to know about me they could go read what I've written over the years. But then, I never crap post (some may disagree), and I usually always write sincerely. So the idea of shredding all that is kind of startling.

Very nice, very satisfying. I was surprised the back button remembered history; not saying good or bad, just surprising.
marktangotango··on Bottom line, a college degree is worth the cost and then some
Even that methodology is flawed. Walmart has a lot of store manager/assistant managers that do quite well with high school diplomas or GEDs. Smart motivated people also do well starting businesses or working in trades. The incessant narrative that a college degree as the path to prosperity is tired and worn and rightly perceived as bogus imo.

University is now a business, and the product is degrees and "college experience", the customers are students. The product has suffered; degrees are no longer rigorous. Teaching faculty have suffered; tenure tracks has disappeared in favor of adjunct part time faculty. Students suffer under mountains of debt. The only winners are the legions of administrators. Some schools have as many as 1 administrator per 1 student. It's absurd.

Ah, so excavating the launch tower was intentional; demo tower 0.1 to make room for tower 0.2!

In fact it was a really amazing "engine out" test. The thing appeared to been shedding engines all the way to RUD. I imagine these engines were all early generation, might as well fly them, units. It's easy to imagine a calculus of "we're pretty sure X% of engines will fail, but we only need Y% for this flight, go ahead and fly them". But yeah, Musk once said there's a gigawatt of power going through these Raptor engines, that's not nothing.

marktangotango··on A Gambler Who Beat Roulette
I'll post this here if anyone has noticed something similar. There's a state lotto game that I'm convinced uses at least two different sets of balls, and one set has a distinct weight imbalance such that draws using the set have a bias. A bias such that picking numbers with a 15-20 number gap would have significantly better odds of winning.

I'm not a statistician though and analyzing historic draws is beyond my ability.

marktangotango··on Is Babylon 5 secretly the most influential TV show of the past 25 years? (2021)
Some episodes of DS9 were truly joyous to watch because the actors you mention were clearly having so much fun with the roles. Adding to them; Gul Dukat, Damar, Worf, Weyoun, it was just so great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acF2f3XLfCo

Babylon 5 is similar in that a lot of the scenes featuring Lando or G'kar were just mesmerizing. Garibaldi's hard boiled detective persona was a treat too.

IMO it highlights just what a commodity they weights are. If all one needs is the weights to reproduce the work, then where is the value? I mean there is very little moat here. Further, what does it say about consciousness and individuality if we all are simply the values of the weights in our wet neural networks? Or whatever the biological equivalent is?
