marklabedz··on Show HN: A new, clean, and concise look at weather from My-Cast
I like it. My first instinct was to click on the radar to expand it (maybe because I'm trying to determine if I'll need a kayak to get to work tomorrow in PHL). I like that the timestamps for the radar frames were converted from GMT/Zulu for me.

Your hourly forecast is nice and clean. Have you considered adding greater detail to the precipitation icons? Percent probability or estimated total QPF? Either way, I think this is an easier presentation than the hourly weather graphs on NWS.

Bottom line, I'll keep checking back to see how things develop.

EDIT: Forgot to add - good job making the map responsive to zooming and panning. That is one thing that drives me nuts with many radar/map implementations.

marklabedz··on Judge Allows Sony to Unmask Anyone Who Visited GeoHot Site
...and likewise for those who accessed the site(s) after the suit was filed.
marklabedz··on Why Can't M.B.A. Students Write?
The ability to effectively communicate is drastically underrated. (Perhaps because its the most difficult to quantitatively measure?)
marklabedz··on Live from Apple's iPad 2 event
For the general public, it doesn't have to keep up with hardware specs when the experience already out-paces it.
marklabedz··on Live from Apple's iPad 2 event
What competitors are shipping their tablets by March 11? Last I saw for RIM was April. Loaded question perhaps, but the "iPad killers" based on Honeycomb aren't out en masse yet.
marklabedz··on Live from Apple's iPad 2 event
Nothing a little good polish can't take care of.
marklabedz··on How to Prepare Your Family for Entrepreneurship
>>4. Talk openly with family members.

For those with family, talking with them openly should be #1 - before taking the plunge. Unless everyone (esp the spouse/significant other) is on board, you'll sacrifice the relationship or spend too much time trying to patch it.

marklabedz··on Ask HN: Why Am I In College?
The greatest thing I took from college was the ability to approach a problem and truly explore it from different angles. (I'll admit to a liberal arts education.) The state of the art, by definition, is constantly changing, so have the ability to learn and attack challenges is very powerful in the "real world" beyond college.
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Actually good perks
The two big ones me are interesting work and trust/flexibility to allow me to complete a goal in the way I see fit.

Beyond those two, I've really come to appreciate a comfortable working environment. In my case, that means having an office that is up to date, relatively few stains on the carpet, working infrastructure in conference rooms (I'm always shocked how many people have to deal with broken plugs, barely function Polycoms, etc).

marklabedz··on Ask HN: Do you actually read cover letters?
Simple answer, yes.

It really is the first impression for me. I begin to develop my views as to whether or not the applicant can communicate in an effective and compelling way. When I hire, I assume I need to teach some job-specific skills (especially related to in-house tools), but I really dislike teaching communication skills. Applicants can overcome a lack of specific experience if they have demonstrated the ability to learn quickly and communicate effectively.

marklabedz··on Ask HN: Do you tend to visit a limited number of websites?
I have roughly 8-10 sites I visit regularly (probably driven by the tiles my Chrome homepage). When I find something particularly interesting though, my browsing becomes much more on the "exploration expedition" side. Kind of like this: http://www.randsinrepose.com/archives/2010/10/21/an_unexpect...
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Best CRM tool for a startup
Maybe you were thinking of this post (it was on HN a few weeks ago, I think):

http://mygengo.com/talk/blog/15-web-services-we-rely-on-ever...

They're using Salesforce.

marklabedz··on Ask HN: How do you handle sensitive information (passwords, SSH keys, etc.)?
For passwords and other sensitive, text-type, info: KeePass in Dropbox for syncing http://keepass.info/

For SSH keys, tax returns, other sensitive documents: True Crypt volume http://www.truecrypt.org/

marklabedz··on Oracle vs. Google - Problems in Discovery
>>But at its core, what we are seeing is Google saying, in effect, that Oracle is the plaintiff. It has to tell what it is complaining about enough for Google to know how to defend itself. And so far, its position is that it can't really go forward in discovery revelations unless Oracle gets more specific on a claim by claim basis, telling Google which Android devices are infringing.

>>Oracle so far is saying, if I've understood their claims, and not having their answers to Google's interrogatories, I might not have it fully, that all of Android is infringing the patents, all devices that run Android from 2008 onward. Stating it is to see what the problem is, I think. In any case, we can see why they need the judge to intervene and tell them who has to cough up specifics first and/or to what degree. Although how he will know in such a technical dispute is a little hard for me to see.

marklabedz··on Ditch Starbucks and work at the library
>>The small liberal arts college I attended in PA had a Carnegie library that was converted into an art museum.

Likewise, the small liberal arts school I attended in IN. At the time it was converted, it was structurally in better shape than the "new" library, but unfortunately, quite undersized.

marklabedz··on New in Gmail Labs: Unread message icon

One Philadelphia Offer:

>>First Unitarian Church,Philadelphia 100% Dogma Free 100% Guilt Free 100% Damnation Free

Either the hype/prediction machine totally missed what Google Offers is or I'm totally baffled as to how Google Offers, in its current state, will compete with Groupon.

marklabedz··on Detroit, MI to Receive First Regional Patent Office
>>According to Secretary Locke and USPTO Director David Kappos, one of the primary reasons for opening a satellite Patent Office is the fact that there is a finite number of qualified hirers who are willing to relocate to the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, making it difficult to recruit enough qualified patent examiners.
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Help choosing App name: Resume vs CV
One data point: I've always thought of CV as more common in academia/research type fields and as some of my foreign colleague's name for a resume.
marklabedz··on [dead]
>>would it be wrong to assume that 99% of people visiting the site already know what it is?

Every industry is different, of course, but I think pitching a product/service (however briefly) is always a good thing. Give people an intriguing reason to sign up and see what else is on offer.

marklabedz··on [dead]
Played with the mobile version on a Blackberry 9700 (using Blackberry Browser) - so far, no problems. I don't have a band or any experience being in one, so I can't provide any commentary in that regard. Sorry!
marklabedz··on [dead]
When I visited in Chrome, I wasn't sure what your site offered. When I visited in IE, I got a laugh out of your warning screen, but at least I was able to read the page title - "Advanced Data Collections and Analytics System."

Clicking through the sign up forms, I'm guessing it's analytics targeted at creative groups, but I'm not sure what your competitive differentiator is.

EDIT: After reading your post (looks like we were typing at the same time, I guess it makes sense and I appreciate your efforts to stand out. If I were to mention it to a colleague though, without any other info, I'm guessing said colleague wouldn't stick around long.

marklabedz··on Senator Al Franken: No joke, Comcast trying to whack Netflix
This is an important point and worth providing a link to a full explanation of easements. Wikipedia seems to have a pretty comprehensive (and accurate from knowledge) review of the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easement
marklabedz··on Senator Al Franken: No joke, Comcast trying to whack Netflix
The other option is for Comcast to provide the service as advertised, at the current price, yielding a reduction in profit. No business wants to do that obviously, however since Comcast effectively has a monopoly in many markets, they can't (should be allowed to) abuse their market position.
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Please give us feedback on our (anti-social) tool thinkery.me
When I tried to register, I get an error upon entering my email address - "invalid email address" - I tried closing and reopening the register window. (I'm trying on Chrome 9/Win)

Otherwise, just looking through it - like the layout and the general concept is intriguing. To answer your question of focus, I like the idea of filters or aggregating additional content. (But please let me choose whether or not to accept those new content streams.)

EDIT: When I register from the homepage, the form works. Previously I tried to click register while viewing your sample Nader page.

marklabedz··on Poll: Is HN your main online news source?
HN is where I go to find good discussion about topics in which I'm interested. For general news, the BBC still tops my list.
marklabedz··on Google Engineer bails out student in jail
Unfortunately, its not just those building and running the prisons. In 2009, a pair of judges outside of Philly pleaded guilty to accepting $2.6M in kickbacks from private detention centers: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/14/us/14judge.html
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Please take part in experiment on HN's collective expertise.
When presenting: Never, ever read from a slide. Always speak more words than you type. If possible, get rid of slides completely.
marklabedz··on Dropbox hits 1.0
Indeed. Competition in the PDF viewer space (not to mention browser) is a wonderful thing.
