marklabedz··on Lion Launches Tomorrow, July 20, On Mac App Store
I needed a new MBP by the end of this summer, so I actually hurried up to buy one yesterday. That way, I can stay on SL while any kinks in Lion are smoothed out.
marklabedz··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
That makes sense. My initial thought was that iPhone "5" would lead to a spike in demand and therefore a spike in revenue. I forgot to take into account the ability (or lack thereof) to MEET demand. Thank you.
marklabedz··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
Oppenheimer mentioned that Apple is transitioning products and that it will impact their projected revenues. Is this Lion/MBA/MB/iPhone? If so, how would that lead to a softening of revenue?

marklabedz··on Groklaw - Novell Answers Lodsys - What Damages Has Lodsys Suffered?
PJ writing: >>Novell asserts four counterclaims regarding the two patents Lodsys asserts against Novell, asking for a declaratory judgment of invalidity and noninfringement. And its affirmative defenses include failure to mitigate damages. That makes me smile, because Lodsys is in what business, exactly, leading to what damages? And that's Novell's point, which it makes explicit in another affirmative defense: "Lodsys's Complaint, and each and every claim for relief therein, is barred because Lodsys has not suffered any damages."
marklabedz··on For Google, iCloud Is Annoying; For Microsoft, It's A Humiliation
To (mis)quote Henry Ford: "If had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have told me a faster horse."

The iPhone, iPod, and especially the iPad represented a near-total re-conceptualization of the product in that space.

marklabedz··on HP TouchPad: Shipping July 1
In principle I agree, however, much has been made of Apple's buying power when it comes to key components (displays, solid state storage, etc). Apple may well have the lowest actual component cost.
marklabedz··on HP TouchPad: Shipping July 1
>>HP also said today that it will be partnering with AT&T to introduce a connected version of HP TouchPad later this summer. No details yet, but stay tuned.
marklabedz··on Google uncovers major account-hijacking campaign targeting senior US officials
I'm sure its no accident that the Pentagon stated they may treat cyber attacks as "acts of war" - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13614125
marklabedz··on 56% of Americans have Internet data caps; FCC asked to investigate
One day we'll have a solid wireless option that can compete with physical lines. It will be just as disruptive as cell phones were to land lines. That's the only way you get around the massive barrier to entry that is running physical utility lines. One day.
marklabedz··on Serve HN: A way to show and discuss technology for social good on HN.
OK, I'll bite. The tough part is that this is Hacker News, not Start-up News, much less Idealist News, etc. This probably isn't the right forum for evaluating a social/community ventures. Many people here have a deep understanding of how to start a business and make money, but not everyone knows how to address gaps in society (for lack of a better way of putting it).

Hacker News is many things to many people (I'm not in the start-up world right now myself) but it can't be everything to everyone.

Please don't take this or the (lack of) responses in some threads as a snub to the many ideas for improving society - I'm sure many of us have had and continue to have ideas for improving the world around us.

As for the title tag idea, hmm. Sure, why not give it a shot? I don't know that it hurts. Just know this may not be the best forum.

marklabedz··on Ask HN: Are Herman Miller Aerons worth the money?
Yes, but try out a few other chairs of similar quality first. They all have slightly different shapes and some feel better than others, depending on the person. Even in the office I use, we have several batches of Aerons with slightly different feels and features.

EDIT - Here are some other brands that usually don't carry such a price premium on CraigsList:

marklabedz··on Ask HN: what can you learn at university that you can't self-teach?
In addition to exposure to a wide variety of topics, learning how to attack problems from various angles or using different frameworks is incredibly useful.
marklabedz··on Ask HN: What do you read every day?
news.bbc.co.uk HN Al Jazeera English
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Moving from fulltime to contractor, need help figuring through rates.
Don't forget, the cost to replace you is not your salary + search time. It includes benefits, lost productivity, putting a roof over your head, providing a phone etc. See http://www.useit.com/alertbox/loadedcost.html
marklabedz··on Poll: Display points on comments?
While I appreciate the idea of logarithmic scales and other advanced formulas for accumulating points, how about a simple threshold for displaying the points on each comment? For instance, no points are displayed until a comment is +5 or -2?
marklabedz··on Twitter killer in the works?
Not one mention of how they would convert people from Twitter.

They would have a huge traction problem. Not that it couldn't be done, but I don't think its more than hot air and an attempt to "encourage" Twitter at the moment.

Now if it involved Facebook and status updates in an exclusive way...

marklabedz··on The Programmer Salary Taboo
On one hand, being able to compare yourself to others is very valuable. The challenges arise though in how to square two different numbers. What is the value of each individual skill? If 2 people have differing abilities in 3 different skills, are all skills valued equally?
marklabedz··on Ask HN: How do you like HN's new karmaless comments?
It makes it more difficult for me to quickly scan the most "insightful" comments when determining whether or not to read the article.
marklabedz··on Ask HN: Where can I find studies that link office plants to productivity
The contracts that most offices have with professional "gardeners" cost significantly more money than you may expect. If only hoop's office management would have realized that some people may be willing to take on some of the maintenance.

EDIT: Here's a presentation through the Green Building Council of Australia that highlights the benefits of indoor environments on productivity. Note however, it is sponsored by a company that offers the previously mentioned contracts.

marklabedz··on Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player
Yes - they provide download capability, however it's at the individual file level only right now.
marklabedz··on Major Canadian ISP admits throttling World of Warcraft
You make it sound like the US has something particularly good relative to the rest of the world. If only that were the case.

marklabedz··on Google Voice Integrated Into Sprint Service
With the news that AT&T is buying T-Mobile, does Sprint move to position itself as a "cool, customer-oriented" mobile service?

marklabedz··on How a simple comment on Hacker News made me quit my job and launch a startup
The mental difference between 0 and X is dramatically larger than the difference between X and X+1, no matter what X may be. Focus on the offering and striking a chord with your target market.

marklabedz··on Ask HN: learning Ruby/Rails
I messed around for a while on http://hackety-hack.com/ and now I'm playing with Ruby Koans also.

EDIT: Forgot that I first started with http://tryruby.org/
