markhalonen··on Hasura raises $9.9M to simplify GraphQL
What made you choose Hasura over Postgraphile? RBAC is a postgres feature, not sure if that would affect the decision?
markhalonen··on Hasura raises $9.9M to simplify GraphQL
I ultimately chose Postgraphile over Hasura. Mostly because the Postgraphile codebase seemed way hackable, written in TS/JS with a plugin architecture. I've tried some Haskell and that's just a whole nother world I don't have time to learn. So far it's working great for me.
markhalonen··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
No idea why Benjie is getting down voted, SQL from a client is a bad idea, and writing billions and billions of CRUD endpoints is soul-draining.

Postgrahile is the best of both worlds, providing a nice GraphQL interface on top of your database.

If you decide you need to write crud endpoints, you have your database still. It's a zero-cost abstraction, which is wild.

markhalonen··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
No I'm not agreeing with you at all.

It's a great idea, and my clients and bank account agree with me.

markhalonen··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
I'm using Postgraphile in production on 2 real-world projects and it saves me an incredible amount of time. I spend 90%+ of my time on the front-end because the api is all automated.

Postgrahile allows you to rename/disable api endpoints if needed.

Postgraphile rocks. And it's written in modualar Javascript, so I can hack it if I need to. Unlike Hasura.

lol that totally clears potential corruption
markhalonen··on Ask HN: What's the fastest tool for basic CRUD?
Postgraphile https://github.com/graphile/postgraphile

It's like Hasura but written in a language you can understand.

Using it with great success on two projects, both > 3 months into development on.

markhalonen··on How the internet helped crack the Astros' sign-stealing case
They will start training on coach body language, things like steps, leaning over, covering his mouth, head movement...

I'm sure coaches have some kind of tell when they get excited about calling a play-action deep ball after the run game got 3 straight first downs.

markhalonen··on PostgREST
I've been using Postgraphile along with Apollo Client with code-generated types for queries. When I change the db schema, I get compile errors in my client. Feels like I'm cheating
markhalonen··on Software projects written in Haskell
I considered Hasura but went with postgraphile (https://github.com/graphile/postgraphile) because it's written in JavaScript with a plugin architecture, meaning I can easily add my own plugins into the system down the road. Creating a JavaScript plugin sounds much less daunting that looking into a mature Haskell codebase.
markhalonen··on I quit social media and now I want a cigarette
Liberals are crushing it. Hillary Clinton opposed gay marriage in 2008. Think about that, how fast liberals are changing society. Liberals are absolutely crushing it.
markhalonen··on Show HN: Quickly generate REST API (for Postgres db)
I've been using this tool on a project for a couple months. It's been fantastic, I spend all my time on the frontend!
markhalonen··on Julia's Release Process
I'm currently using Julia for a robot motion planning software , as well as a for a data science project. Julia is the preferred language of our company Laurium Labs https://www.lauriumlabs.com
markhalonen··on Switching from Common Lisp to Julia (2017)
I'm using Julia instead of Python/Pandas for a machine learning project and I'm happy with how things are going. Multiple dispatch is very cool. The project was previously written in R, but the performance and lack of programming clarity inspired a re-write in Julia.

There is something satisfying about writing code in a high-performance language, you just know you won't be kicking yourself because it would run 10x faster in another language.

markhalonen··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
I created Vora (https://getvora.com/) as a solo developer. I sold it a couple months ago, at time of sale it was making $300-500 in monthly profit
markhalonen··on Ask HN: As a freelancer, what's the best app to track finances?
I've found a net worth tracker to be awesome, and wish I'd started using it earlier. Every month I actually look forward to logging my new net worth that takes into account all my assets and liabilities. I view myself as a business, and net worth is a KPI. This is the app I use https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wealthplus-net-worth/id93353...

For invoices, time-tracking etc., I use Freshbooks Cloud which is great.

markhalonen··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you estimate projects and write proposals?
https://uncertain.io/ I wrote this tool for this exact purpose! A horizontal line means you know nothing. A near vertical line means you are damn certain. Theoretically your stance is somewhere in between.
markhalonen··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you estimate projects and write proposals?
I wrote a similar tool to estigator! It's bare-basic, but aims to solve the same problem: https://uncertain.io/
