It's so easy for great links to come and go on the new page without even getting a single vote. Everyone, make sure to browse the new page and vote up good links! It's your civic duty.
markerdmann··on Reddit: 2012 State of the Servers
It's interesting to see that they're sticking with Cassandra, and that they're having a much better experience with 0.8. I've been hearing so many fellow coders in SF hate on Cassandra that I had stopped considering it for projects. Has anybody worked with 0.8 or 1.0? Would you recommend Cassandra?

I got to work with Riak a lot while I was at DotCloud, but the speed issue was pretty frustrating (it can be painfully slow).

markerdmann··on Show HN: I've created a site about Bone Marrow Donation
Great work on putting the site together. The design is beautiful. I was able to find the theme on themeforest, but it looks like you customized it in a really nice way. May I ask who designed the logo and background?

By the way, if anyone else is looking for the theme, you can find it here:

markerdmann··on Intercom raises $1M
Wow, why did this story suddenly go from rank 1 to rank 35 in just a few minutes?
markerdmann··on Intercom raises $1M
Glad to hear it. I've been using Intercom in a web app for the past 6 months, and it's awesome. Definitely makes it much easier to track activity and communicate with users through the site. I wish Olark had some of the Intercom features, or that Intercom had a chat feature.
markerdmann··on Welcome Garry and Aaron
It would be awesome if you could share some of those discoveries.
markerdmann··on Mozilla releases version 0.1 of the Rust programming language
In case you're wondering why we need another programming language, this short audio clip from Brendan Eich is great:

"With Rust, what Graydon has been trying to do is focus on safety and also on you could say concurrency -- the actor model which I've spoken about recently - and the two are related in subtle ways."

markerdmann··on Show HN: A GitHub + AngelList API mashup that ranks startups
Ok, changes are up.
markerdmann··on Show HN: A GitHub + AngelList API mashup that ranks startups
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I added a bit of code that displays the GitHub links when you hover over each startup. I'm just waiting for the database to finish updating, then I'll push the changes.
markerdmann··on Show HN: A GitHub + AngelList API mashup that ranks startups
By the way, thanks to Academia.edu for hosting a great hack night every other Tuesday. Their beer and pizza helped make this possible. :-)
markerdmann··on Show HN: A GitHub + AngelList API mashup that ranks startups
We search for a GitHub account that matches the startup name and a GitHub account for each LinkedIn username of the startup's team members. So, to use demand analytics as an example, we found these GitHub accounts:

https://github.com/josscrowcroft https://github.com/usethekey

I'll update the site so that it links to the GitHub accounts for each startup.

markerdmann··on Show HN: A GitHub + AngelList API mashup that ranks startups
Great idea, I'll add that in as soon as I can. Keep an eye out for the update.

You can also try using Google's filetype operator, for example:

filetype:pdf "Maximizing the spread of influence through a social network"

And if it's not available online, many researchers will send you a copy of the pdf if you send them a nice email.

markerdmann··on Suddenly, Hacker News is not the first result for 'Hacker News'
That's helpful, thanks. I haven't kept a record of those searches (they were mostly programming-related queries), but I'd be happy to submit reports in the future. Is there a URL or email address for this purpose?
markerdmann··on Suddenly, Hacker News is not the first result for 'Hacker News'
Has Google been making significant changes to the search ranking algorithms in the past couple months? I've noticed a significant decline in the quality of results, to the point that (for the first time in years), I've bounced over to DuckDuckGo or Bing to try my luck there. I love Google as a company, so (if this isn't just in my head) I'd love to see things get better again.

EDIT: Looks like the change to HN's ranking is related to a change that pg made, so my comment is now less relevant to the parent post. I still stand by it, though. :-)

Definitely. Here's the script:

Just let me know if there's anything I need to clarify.

markerdmann··on This is what happens when one guy practices art every day for nine years
The site seems to be under a lot of load. In case anyone (like me) is having trouble viewing the images, I wrote a quick script to scrape the images:

The naming format is "page_X_image_X.jpg".

EDIT:

Here's a video slideshow of the images:

Webdis is definitely a great project. I'd say it mostly depends on your personal preference and feature requirements. Webdis also has a larger and more complex codebase, which has its pros and cons.

markerdmann··on Ask PG: Is something staving off the decline of HN?
Both, but the increased quality of the stories is what led me to ask. Will the changes to the voting ring detector show up in the Arc source, or is that kept secret in order to preserve the effectiveness of the detector?
