markeganfuller··on What happens if authorities seize your laptop?
"During their inspection of your laptop, the authorities will disregard files that are not germane to their investigation, says Rosenzweig, explaining that the official policy is to 'flush all non-criminal data'."

How exactly do they tell the difference, what if I use steganography to hide stuff in my family pictures? They won't flush anything, they will keep everything in case it's relevant.

markeganfuller··on Optimal Characters Per Line
That is the one thing that jumped out at me. Otherwise I agree with everything.
markeganfuller··on Steam Removes Game 'Order Of War: Challenge' From User Libraries
Got a link? That sounds interesting.
markeganfuller··on Google Account Recovery Vulnerability
Sounds like it would be a good extension to Data Protection / Computer Abuse/Misuse Acts depending on what it allows access to. Anyone pointing out a failing in your system should not be prosecuted unless they've actually committed a crime.
markeganfuller··on Rant: Why should I email my CV?
>There's another concern to be aware of: some unscrupulous recruiters will edit your CV. That is, if they see a job posting looking for someone with x years experience with Spring, they might just add that to your CV, even if you've never worked with a java stack.

For this reason I always carry copies with me to interviews.

markeganfuller··on Jenkin developers accidentally do "git push --force" to over 150 repos on github
Maybe that should be the default. It does a dry run and if you're sure you add --do or something.

Hasn't this news already been released? I'm sure I recall seeing it somewhere before? Or has it happened yet again?
markeganfuller··on Slackware 14.1 is released
On that note, the wiki is amazing. I use Debian but I constantly find myself on the Arch wiki due to the in-depth explanations yet simple instructions for everything.
markeganfuller··on Why Putting SSH On Another Port is a Good Idea
Except unless your only target is that one tank you're not going to scan all its ports.

Normally I'd respect something RMS said and I love him for his conviction but on this we must disagree :)

Bad Cert? You attempted to reach filipmolcan.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as *.sqsp.com.
markeganfuller··on “When all your engines stop, the flight is over”
+1 for the Arch wiki. Despite being a distro wiki they have very nice in depth and distro-independent pages. I use Debian but regularly read through the Arch wiki when trying to do new stuff.
markeganfuller··on Don't be evil: Moving everything off of Google
>and I can't see a better company than Google to handle it.

Google hasn't exactly been a good company recently, at the very least the whole reader issue has caused a lot of worry.

markeganfuller··on Replacing Python: candidates. ATS, C#, Go, Haskell, OCaml & Rust
This is a very strange way of 'faking' a read-only file and after testing Python, it handles real read-only files fine

markeganfuller··on A command line tool to manage your ssh connections
I've built a script that creates the config by querying EC2 for servers, this avoids having to pass around server names when new servers are created. Just run the script and every server is added.
markeganfuller··on If you love automation, why is your development environment manual?
I prefer having a VM built with Vagrant (and in our case puppet) which runs the same configs as our servers while having my development tools (editors etc) installed on the local machine. That way all my apps run at native speed, and the server replicates (almost exactly) the production environment.

We've never been directly notified by them despite their SMTP breaking a number of times.
