markedathome··on Show HN: I made a community sourced fitness routine database
Runtastic had apps that used to do this, where you held the phone and it counted the reps, push-ups, sit-ups etc. There were apps for each activity, which gave you reps, a count, and a timer, along with cooldown, with voice prompts.

Then Adidas bought them out and closed the individual apps and released a replacement for the main Runtastic app.

There were numerous threads on reddit asking for similar replacements, and I don't think there has been one. So I gave up looking.

markedathome··on The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 Review
In the linked video[1], Raspberry Pi foundation show an extension cable being used to move a card away from the IO board. They indicate that they expect most manufacturers to alter the design of the IO board to more closely match the product requirements, and not leave an NVME drive, or PCI express card poking up.

markedathome··on 2.1M of the oldest Usenet posts are now online for anyone to read
hu hum...digs out "Managing UUCP and Usenet" by Tim O'Reilly and Grace Todino, revised 1994.

p293 " ! Should only be used when sending via UUCP. This should be the only special character in the address (called a path). The path indicates each site through which mail will be routed, starting at the left and going towards the right. Mixing ! with @ is not considered good. That is, use:

uunet!ucbvax.berkeley.edu.edu!smith

not:

uunet!smith@ucbvax.berkeley.edu.edu"

In other words because UUCP was dialup and long distance expensive, email was routed through specific known hosts, which is why sometimes people ended up with long bangpathed addresses.

markedathome··on UASP makes Raspberry Pi 4 disk IO 50% faster
You have the Compute Module versions of the pi with embedded storage.

The reasoning behind the SD cards on the consumer pis is that they are quick to swap out, and don't have the problems that "bricking" the OS could get you into with booting from onboard storage. There is the possibility to use USB booting in the latest boards (certainly with the 3+ not sure about the status of the 4) which has a flag set in the onboard eeprom so you can use external SSDs/USB drives.

markedathome··on YouTube to limit default video quality around the world for a month
Could watching over VPN to other territories be an issue? or would that just be noise in the metrics? I'm primarily thinking of something like watching disney+ from countries outside their current distribution
markedathome··on HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10 Plus vs. Gen10 Hardware Overview
the UK price includes VAT@20% so you are looking for around £524 (629), £699 (839), and £770 (922) respectively, which doesn't look terribly far off the US pricing given the standard UK markup.

The normal UK server resellers and disties (including the one I bought my gen8 microserver from) don't seem to have them listed yet.

markedathome··on Blender GIS
Ubisoft/Massive Entertainment's "Tom Clancy's The Division" (New York - Brooklyn and Manhattan), and "Tom Clancy's The Division 2" Washington DC both have extensive GIS imported locations, cleaned up with LIDAR and post-processing for trees/vehicles. I know there is a video about Division 2's use of GIS as I remember seeing it, but can't find it at the moment. I think it might be a game developers conf video.

> If trained on massive sets of source code and briefs (or perhaps a set of unit tests), could it spit out functioning code based on a problem statement?

Microsoft's latest Visual Studio 2019 beta (v3) has intellicode[0] support which is supposed to ML "guess" 'code' based on equivalent github similarities. I don't think it is quite near to what you are asking, but certainly part of the way there.
