mariusmg··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
>To understand IMAX, it helps to know how movies are captured in the first place. Many are shot digitally, as it's cheaper and more convenient than using film. However, many filmmakers still want, well, film

The illogical part about this process is that they convert the shot film to digital, they add CGI and color correction and then they print back the digital version to....film.

So the whole point of shooting a Hollywood movie on film today is because some directors like....film. There is no practicality/cost/reasoning to it.

mariusmg··on Firefox Containers Preview
I stopped fighting with Firefox to use containers the way i wanted a long time ago...

Nowadays i just use different Firefox instances.

mariusmg··on OBS Studio Gets a New Renderer
>James Webb calls anything heavier than helium “metal.”

And i call it great music.

mariusmg··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
>So why isn't anyone trying to replace Mozilla yet,

Because writing manifestos is easy and making a browser is proper hard work ?

mariusmg··on Why shouldn't you give money to homeless people?
>It is better to give to homeless shelters and food banks.

Watch this stand-up comedy bit which deals with this topic

mariusmg··on i3wm inspired wm for Windows
I've found Niri* to be the best but there are stability/performance problems (especially when you go over +20 windows) with all of them. Maybe once they will be "baked-in" in Gnome/KDE things will change.

mariusmg··on i3wm inspired wm for Windows
Tiling is old news, bring on scrollable window managers.

I honestly think scrollable VM is the future of window management. It just make sense to arrange windows like that instead of cram multiple opened windows in a fixed area.

mariusmg··on Microsoft suggests command line fiddling to get Windows 10 update installed
Why do i get this faulty patch if i'm not even using Bitlocker ?

Also how the heck does something like this happens ? Did MS forgot the size of the WinRE partion which THEY created ?

mariusmg··on IAC sold 17 apps to Bending Spoons. $100M deal, all 330 employees fired
Wow, even that /people page screams "douchebags".....
mariusmg··on Xbox Will "Exit the Gaming Business" If Game Pass Doesn't Get Enough Subscribers
Old and pointless article. Since then they "won" the FTC case and purchase Activision Blizzard.

Nobody spends 70 billions only to "exit" the gaming business couple of months later.

mariusmg··on Court: Cloudflare Is Liable for Pirate Site, but Not as a DNS Provider
>According to the ruling, DDL-Music has no other purpose than to share pirated music and Cloudflare plays a central role in making the site available.

And if they switch DNS providers what will they do ? +File a lawsuit for each DNS provider? Makes no sense to "sanction" the DNS provider because of the website content.

Also one other thing that plays a "centrol role" in making pirate websites available are electricity companies which provide power for servers. Shouldn't they sue those too ?

>In addition to stopping its services to DDL-Music as a customer, Universal also wanted Cloudflare to block the site on its public DNS resolver 1.1.1.1.

Bunch of clowns...

mariusmg··on That time Verisign typo-squatted all of .com and .net
One extra reason to never use the ISP DNS services. Just switch to Cloudflare and never look back.
mariusmg··on Choose the browser that best suits your privacy needs
Yeah, you're switching browsers not 3D modelling software.

It's easy people. Switch to Firefox today.

mariusmg··on Fluent Search
Description : "With Fluent Search, you can search for running apps, browser tabs"

Reality : install it, tried to search Firefox tabs, doesn't work. Then found https://github.com/adirh3/Fluent-Search/issues/850

Nope.

mariusmg··on Linux Mint Working on Wayland Support
Regarding Wayland support, the gap between KDE/Gnome and these smaller DEs (XFCE, Cinnamon, Mate , LXDE etc etc) is getting wider and wider...
mariusmg··on California suspends Cruise's autonomous vehicle deployment

mariusmg··on Intel Meteor Lake Architecture

Yeah, they need to move to rivers now...

mariusmg··on Any sufficiently advanced uninstaller is indistinguishable from malware
> with a fairly steep learning curve and a ton of "tribal knowledge"

Yes, people preffer to debug their own code rather than spend shitload of time to understand Wix/MSI.

Microsoft deciding early on to not produce low cost tools for Windows Installer also didn't helped with the adoption.

mariusmg··on Knightmare: A DevOps Cautionary Tale (2014)
First problem was repurposing flags used in the past for different functionality. Just dont do that.
mariusmg··on Ask HN: Underrated music, books, movies?
Music wise, i find "Neobliviscaris : And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" to have interesting composition.

mariusmg··on Throwing away 10 months of work after 2 months on the job
>"let's throw away Windows ME codebase for NT"

Well the Windows 9x codebase was always mean to be , eventually, thrown away. It existed only to be able to run the OS on very low hardware (eg Win95 run even on 4 MB of RAM).

mariusmg··on On Becoming a VP of Engineering

Welcome to management.

mariusmg··on libjpeg-turbo 3.0 has been released, and why there may never be a 3.1
>Why write code if not for the pleasure of it?

Ask a pornstar the same question...but not about code.

mariusmg··on The simplicity of single-file Golang deployments
Often ?

It's 100% scenario. Complex apps (like Gitea for example) delivered as a single binary is basically the pinnacle of deployment.

mariusmg··on So you've installed `fzf` – now what?
Personally i never like the "interactive" part of fzf, ideally i should be able to do micro | fzf "myfile" and have it opened in the editor (fzf matching the first result for the file name)

Instead it's :

micro $(fzf) , then type the filename , select it and presee enter to get it opened in the editor.

mariusmg··on Gitea 1.19
>and some (a lot?) of the community/devs went to https://forgejo.org/

The Forjero commits prove that this is incorrect (they are still busy removing Gitea branding related things from their code). It's going to take a long time until they begin to match the Gitea momentum.

mariusmg··on Tabby is a customizable cross-platform terminal app
>This is madness.

Yeap, even Sparta would bow down to a 265 MB terminal app.

mariusmg··on Leveraging Rust and the GPU to render user interfaces at 120 FPS
If their plan is to make their app crossplatform (Windows,OSX,Linux) and be very versatile with the UI customization , then maybe writing a small/focused specifically for your needs UI crossplatform toolkit is not such a bad idea (after all this is what Sublime Text is doing as well)

But the HW accelerated brag is pointeless. Even if they manage to squeeze some extra performance over native toolkits, that is not necessarely going to matter in the grand scheme of things. Drawing the UI is never the bottlneck in a text editor...

mariusmg··on Let's build a Chrome extension that steals as much data as possible
chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab()

Anyone knows what is the actual legitimate use case for this API ? Seems very dangerous to allow extensions access to it.

mariusmg··on My favourite 3 lines of CSS
.prose :is(h2 + , h3 + , h4 + *)

A person which values their sanity would not write this in CSS.
