mariusmg··on JMAP: It’s Like IMAP but Not Really (2019)
"to evangelize"

It's sad that superior standards need to be evangelized to even hope to gain traction.

mariusmg··on An X11 apologist tries Wayland
>you can use

When was the last time you used this feature ?

X11 is a protocol designed for machines which didn't have the power to draw a GUI locally. That time has long passed.

mariusmg··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
>Sidebery[0] and Tree Style Tab[1] are excellent reasons to stay with Firefox (or any of its derivatives).

I'm using Sideberry (moved from TST) on FF and i think it's good but Edge has great native vertical tabs implementation which doesn't require any "advanced" configuration to make it work.

mariusmg··on U.S. Ship Sunk by Germans in 1917 Is Found Off English Coast
>I can never read anything by nytimes, even with removing cookies

Disable JS on nytimes.com (i use the Ublock Origin extension for this) and it works fine.

mariusmg··on TSMC to begin 3nm chip production next month
>Without Apple TSMC wouldn't exist.

Really, the biggest semiconductor manufacturer in the world with tons of customers cannot exist without Apple ?

mariusmg··on Meatless meat is nothing new
Why does plant based meat costs more than actual meat ?
mariusmg··on Hollywood’s visual effects crisis
>it was based on... a video game of all things

And the Uncharted games are great. They have good characterization, good writing and funny comedy bits. None of these were present in the movie.

mariusmg··on John Carmack: Best Programming Setup and IDE – Lex Fridman Podcast Clips
>Agree with him, VSCode is THE IDE.

Lol, he said Visual Studio is THE IDE, not VSCode. Compared with VS, VSCode is a toy.

mariusmg··on When animation is an accessibility problem
Kudos, i'm borrowing this one.
mariusmg··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
Microsoft pays quite a few people to work on Code. I assume the code is open because they gain some value from community submitting PRs and is good publicity to develop it in the open on Github.

But, make no mistake, this is not a OSS project in the true sense of the word. MS will ALWAYS be the decision maker here and will do whatever it benefits them. They pay people to work on this full time, they get to have the last word. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

mariusmg··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
>across half a million files

>we found that .xlf files made up almost 70% of the total number of files

If one xlf file is used to keep the translation for 1 language, how the heck do you have so many then ? Makes no sense.

If you have many xlf files for 1 language, may God save your soul.

mariusmg··on Undersea Cables Off Hawaii Targeted by Malicious Actors
An angry fish is all you need :)
mariusmg··on Resident Evil Village in the browser through Stadia
Amusingly bad experience when compared with "local" copy. In Stadia it loads for ~3 minutes and then it fails with a "The game couldn't start, but try opening it again now."

With my PC copy, i'm playing in around 15 seconds.

mariusmg··on How San Francisco became a failed city
>What kind of morons are in this advocacy group?

Same type of morons which "advised" people to not get to the hospital to get treated for COVID because the doctors will kill them, harvest their organs and send them to the aliens.

This world is filled with idiots.

mariusmg··on Telegram reportedly surrendered user data to authorities
Or printed on paper ?
mariusmg··on Open Source Alternative To
Having XML/JSON stored in DB is pretty common actually (sometimes you need to store same/related info with different "schemas").

Storing Python and JS.....WTF?

mariusmg··on SumatraPDF 3.4 Released
I had to revert back to 3.3, the EbookUI settings were removed in 3.4 and you cannot use custom fonts when reading EPUB files. It's unusable for me like this.
mariusmg··on Bob Cassette Rewinder: Hacking Detergent DRM
For some reason my brain was "disputing" the word "Detergent" when reading the title, i thought it was "Deterrent" misspelled :)
mariusmg··on Musikcube, a cross-platform, terminal-based library, player and server
Been using this as my music player for about 3 years now (i've switched to it from foobar2000).

It has very low memory footprint and works great. This is the app that "showed" me how great TUI apps are and i wish more TUI apps would exist as equivalent to GUI ones.

mariusmg··on Why America has so few carpenters
This is the stuff that "hurts" the most. The realization that not everyone starts from the same place and most of us are way back from starting line. And no matter how hard you work there isn't a way to recover that "lost distance".
mariusmg··on Leaving The Qt Company
- JS is not needed to create UIs.

- CSS is used for styling, it is important but is not required.

Don't get me wrong, i think QML and XAML are cool and all, but HTML did this a long time ago.

mariusmg··on Leaving The Qt Company
>QML is Qts innovation. The declarative way to write a UI is unmatched when comparing to...the Web

What? Isn't HTML the daddy of declarative languages for UI ?

mariusmg··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
This works with Wox + Switcheroo plugin. Here is how it looks in action :

mariusmg··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
>but none ever worked quite right for me

Try Wox, it has built-in integration with "Everything".

mariusmg··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Their code, their rules ?
mariusmg··on Ace, CodeMirror, and Monaco: A comparison of browser code editors (2021)
>If I were building an IDE today, I would absolutely be building it as a client-server app from day 1.

Why ? The last thing you want as a user when pressing a key in a IDE is to then wait for a network request.

mariusmg··on My essential Firefox fixes in 2022
Nothing as good as Sidebery for Chrome. But if you want to consider Edge, it has a great built-in implementation for vertical tabs.
mariusmg··on Increased error rate on Gov.uk on 5 January 2022
Sadly this is way more common than expected.

People simply fear updates will "break" working software and simply "delay" them. It doesn't mmatter if there are security updates, some people have the updates == bad mentality.

mariusmg··on The remake of 'Shadow of the Colossus': A technical perspective (2019) [video]
They did already, Demon Souls.
