mariorz··on How I Hacked Hacker News (with arc security advisory)
My mistake. So you can get a valid login, but you can't know whom you'll be login in as, that is without doing some social engineering like with the irc example. Impressive hack.

>"Nonetheless, online brute force would still be manageable. If each page view produces an average of 50 candidates, and one in every thousand page views is a login (this might be slightly optimistic), that's 50,000 attempts necessary in order to find a working login. HN gets about 500,000 hits on a busy day, so this could be done in a day or two while likely staying under the radar."

You would have a fnid that is in the cookie hash table, yet you still would not know to which username it is mapped to, correct?

mariorz··on Ask HN: P=NP, what do you do?
The problem with this is it's somewhat public. Assuming your system was outstandingly good, could it not raise dangerous suspicions?

I like your plan for dealing with academia.

mariorz··on Ask HN: P=NP, what do you do?
I've edited out "almost", I meant to use it as qualifying the "stumbled upon" part, not the algorithm.

In any case by fast polynomial solution I meant one with a low degree. Let's assume this algorithm is as fast as existing approximate ones.

mariorz··on Stephen Wolfram’s Introduction to Wolfram Alpha (screencast)
it would be very odd if he went around saying he's hoping that google and msft will start a bidding war for his company.
mariorz··on Ask HN: Stark Trek - How far are we?
and since working conditions will be extremely hazardous, maybe we would send convicts and otherwise "unwanted" citizens to the mines.

we would of course need to send some form of authority, like a warden, just to keep the convicts (loonies!) under control.

it would also be necessary to set them up with an advanced computer system to handle all colony operations, from telephone switching to ballistics calculations for the throws.

all and all, i don't see how this could go wrong.

mariorz··on The 4 Hour Workday
I didn't read anything saying his day started at 9. how on earth can i trust someone writing such a lengthy complaint when he can't even get the simple facts right :)
mariorz··on Magic sucks, Django Rocks
really not a fan of these 'rails is like a ferrari, django is like an aston martin' type of similes, they mean nothing to me. the article itself is pretty light on content; not much here except a baitish title.
mariorz··on The Psychological Aversion to Extremes
this sounds quite logical but I'm curious if anyone here has done some A/B tests on it and would want to share
mariorz··on The Problem With Young Web Entrepreneurs
Well you can't call them but here is their paper on pagerank http://ilpubs.stanford.edu:8090/422/

There is a short mention of previous work done with academic citation analysis and there is also a bit at the end about the original purpose of the algorithm (displaying ranked backlinks.)

mariorz··on The Problem With Young Web Entrepreneurs
and I'm pretty sure Larry Page did not design pagerank to be used for ranking academic papers, it was for the web since the start. There was actually previous work on a similar ranking system for academic papers that was referenced in pagerank iirc.

He got in.

mibbit's been experimenting a lot in this area directly. You should check it out.

>I find it fascinating that the lethality of the disease seems to be linked to those of a "Mexican-American" background (i.e. native American).

I don't know where you're getting this from. AFAIK there has been one lethality case in the US. Also the majority of the Mexican population is of mixed race rather than purely native American.

>The one thing that they are stumped about is that the foreigners (mostly "white" - of European descent) that have contracted the disease seem to have an easier time dealing with it. It makes you wonder if there has been an outbreak in Europe's past that has protected the decedents of the survivors.

It could also simply be that foreigners (white and of European descent) have better living conditions and healtcare systems than 80% of the population of mexico city.

mariorz··on [dead]
i'm concerned about the international adoption of a US like alert-level system

in my mind the character used words like that sarcastically
mariorz··on Switch and Bait — How Apple should respond to Microsoft's laptop shopping ads
i think the author's idea of interviewing them as the macs are taken away could be far more comedic and make better advertisement
mariorz··on Why Being Smart Won't Get You Laid
Your point came across much better in the original version:

"being smart will get you laid, for sure. being raised in a family/culture that quashes social interaction and activities is the thing that will salt your game."

mariorz··on Just How Important is the Valley? Let's Look at some Data.
This data isn't of much use for analysis without all the startups that failed or didn't get acquired. This is like trying to analyze average height by nationality using a sample consisting of professional basketball players for each country.
mariorz··on Pirate Bay officially loses case
As other users report no problems with similar setups but using different hosts, I don't think that's the case.
mariorz··on Pirate Bay officially loses case
I use linode for this and while it works on other sites like pandora, no dice on hulu. I get a "sorry, unable to stream this video. check your internet connection" message. Figured maybe they ban IP address blocks belonging to known hosts.
mariorz··on Ask HN: Effective arguments to convince someone to get on Twitter?
It's a new form of publishing that could not have existed before the internet. The constraint to 140 characters and the form it will be consumed effect very directly what and how you write. The medium is the message after all.

I agree that 99% of humanity does not need to be on twitter, just like 99% of humanity does not need to have a blog, but there is something more to it than consensual spamming or following celebs.

mariorz··on RIP, MBA - The economic crisis has exposed the myth of business-school expertise
doctorow doesn't have a "get rid of everything" position on copyright. i don't know where you got that from. He argues creators should still maintain a monopoly on selling their art.

but back to your original claim, you may not like his writing but you have to acknowledge that other people do. not only does he write, but he does so about important and relevant topics, and from a point of view too often ignored by a large part of society. in the very least, to write him off as a paris hilton is dishonest if not asinine.

mariorz··on RIP, MBA - The economic crisis has exposed the myth of business-school expertise
How are his writings "fairly clueless"? Any examples? I've found him to be a very clear thinker wrt to copyright and privacy. I've read a little of his fiction and that wasn't bad either. The blog he started btw is also reliably interesting.

Side note: Good News, I think this Allison person is less famous that you think. I'd never heard of her at least.

mariorz··on RIP, MBA - The economic crisis has exposed the myth of business-school expertise
>On the other hand, there're a lot of people online who are famous for being famous: people like Julia Allison or Cory Doctorow come to mind.

that line doesn't seem to follow logically from it's previous one. seems almost like you went out of your way to diss these people on the internet. in any case, i have to say that i've enjoyed what few i've read from doctorow.

mariorz··on You and I Can't Buy the Guns Mexican Cartels Own
this doesn't belong here, please read the guidelines. It's also so preposterous that I'm marking it off as a troll.
mariorz··on Command-line Fu
for the osx crowd, try:

mariorz··on Ask HN: Increasing Karma Implies Decreasing Variance?
>(I also wish we didn't display post score. I don't know what it provides as a benefit.)

That would be an interesting experiment. However, I think it does provide a certain use, which is getting a sense of how people are perceiving the discussion. Like the audience clapping or booing during a debate.

mariorz··on Ask HN: Increasing Karma Implies Decreasing Variance?
Yes, post quality is one of the factors. My point is that of course there is plenty of gaming going on and it's of the simplest form. The leaderboard only encourages this gaming mentality.
mariorz··on Ask HN: Increasing Karma Implies Decreasing Variance?
Most of the users in the leaderboard are there by the sheer amount of their posts rather than by being particularly insightful or controversial.
