marderfarker2··on DeepCreamPy- Decensoring Hentai with Deep Neural Networks (2018)
How do you recover information that is not there? Best you can do is guess what’s supposed to be there.

That’s why I hate watching 4K AI “enhanced” historical films, it is akin to rewriting history.

marderfarker2··on Steam has been banned in China
> US government

Why should I trust what they have to say as opposed to, say, China’s government? Or any government at all that I did not vote for?

I’m not a U.S. citizen nor on the payroll of CCP or whatnot.

marderfarker2··on Show HN: Tact – A simple chat app for iOS, iPadOS and macOS
I’d probably vomit if I see another “web3” or “decentralization”
marderfarker2··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
I don’t think inanimate objects can influence a person’s mind. However media can, especially when you see the same idea repeated everywhere.
marderfarker2··on Intel apologises in China over Xinjiang supplier statement
I’ve always thought it to be the reverse, since the west has the whole world at their disposal (in terms of audience and technology penetration)
marderfarker2··on Regulators Shut Down Lending Platform (YC Alum) LendUp
With debit card you hand the merchant your whole bank account and trust them to deduct an agreed amount. With credit card it becomes the bank’s problem.

Anyway it doesn’t have to be like this. In China you scan a merchant code and enter the amount you want to pay on your phone, much like a bank transfer, but it happens instantly.

marderfarker2··on NCSA creates Sony PlayStation2 cluster (2003)
My mind is blown. Especially when knowing my WRT54G would buckle if you so much as send it more than a dozen ICMP packets per second.
marderfarker2··on Kodi: An Open Source Home Theater System
I’d rather the app be a master of one than a jack of all trades

Plex is very good when it comes to “just works” for media consumption. That “just works” experience (API enrichment, artwork sourcing, device verification etc.) isn’t easy to maintain.

marderfarker2··on My career of treating patients has ended
Those behavior boils down to human nature of shifting blame and responsibilities.

I’m glad my parents droned into me that nobody can take care of my health except myself.

marderfarker2··on Unbreakable phone screens could be made with a new material
Energizer made phones fitting those specs exactly but it didn’t fly off the shelves.
marderfarker2··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
You also have to be aware of the language barrier/lack of voices from within China who can give you context of what is happening. News that you hear about China are mostly written by western media who has little to no clue about what actually happened (remember the Bloomberg report on the spy chip?). I would exercise caution when reading anything online, especially at this very low SNR climate.

Key to peace and tolerance is understanding, unfortunately China is like a blackbox to most, and people tend to get angry at things they don’t understand.

marderfarker2··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
I think you will disappear if you offend anyone too powerful, even in first worlds/democratic countries.
marderfarker2··on Using AI to Animate Children’s Drawings
They’re not detached. They know everything about you and people around you to infer sentiments and make very good decisions.
marderfarker2··on IBM and Samsung Unveil Semiconductor Breakthrough
You’re not wrong. Mining operators tamper their energy meters so their usage don’t reflect in the bill. My neighbour turned his residence into a mining farm, judging by the ludicrous number of installed air conditioning lol.
marderfarker2··on Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe Covid: study
Pharma probably learnt what worked for software: turn perpetual licenses into subscriptions.

Chances are these “boosters” will become a quarterly occurrence, even when the virus pose little to no threat (to an already vaccinated person)

marderfarker2··on Moo Card Player
> restore some kind of physicality to my digital music collection

If you want physicality then you’d encode the music onto the card itself, rather than point it to a URL or anything that is ephemeral.

marderfarker2··on Oracle Giving Away 4-Core 24 GB Memory Ampere Instances
Do they provide free IPv4 for the x86 instances?
marderfarker2··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
Huh. I went out of my way to buy a 2in1 touchscreen laptop despite not using the 2in1 feature precisely because I know the manufacturer has designed the hinges and casing to be stronger for that use case, so that it doesn’t break easily.

Avoid random Chinese Celeron based 2in1 and you should be fine.

marderfarker2··on Chrome users beware: Manifest v3 is deceitful and threatening
The day Chrome (and it’s derivatives) kill my extensions, is the day I switch to Firefox. I cannot live without my adblocking.
marderfarker2··on Apple Neural Engine Internal: From ML Algorithm to HW Registers
It’s funny that you mention mobility. I usually see people stuck an extra slab of USB C to HDMI/USB hub beside their thinnest and lightest Apple laptops so that they can use peripherals.
marderfarker2··on Chrome client “variations” can be used to identify you (2020)
I don’t think it is ever intended to be a privacy guard but data exfiltration prevention and admittedly to control the narrative, as does with every country including your own for obvious reasons.
marderfarker2··on Web3 Is Not Decentralization
Those are torrent indexes, which is not part of BitTorrent. They’re not essential to function. BitTorrent do come with centralized trackers but they are designed to not hold any payload.
marderfarker2··on Web3 Is Not Decentralization
There isn’t a “top of the hierarchy node” in BitTorrent. Everyone gets treated the same less some tit for tat rules which usually don’t apply because a swarm usually has that 1 or 2 altruistic seeders.
marderfarker2··on Intel updates mysterious ‘software-defined silicon’ code in the Linux kernel
Jokes on you, consoles have also been out stock since forever.
marderfarker2··on I host this blog from my garage
He gotta make full use of those hardware somehow, by throwing unnecessary software at it.
marderfarker2··on Half a Billion in Bitcoin, Lost in the Dump
It’s worth half a billion in theory.
marderfarker2··on Chrome client “variations” can be used to identify you (2020)
This is why China bans these companies long ago. Imagine handing your population’s intel on a silver platter to your adversary.
marderfarker2··on A majority of Gen Z investors think crypto will make them millionaires
Maybe it is an indication of overpopulation and too much automation. Too many people but too few jobs to go around.
marderfarker2··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
This is why I only browse twitter from my notifications panel.

Twitter is great when it serves its purpose of being a 140 char log of people that matter.

marderfarker2··on iPhone apps can tell many things about you through the accelerometer
As if click farms can’t spoof accelerometer already?

Or skip physical hardware altogether.
