marcv81··on Ask HN: Software you hate but can't replace?
It's not better on macOS. Bugs I encounter regularly: webcam not working, memory leaks, CPU usage maxed out.
marcv81··on Show HN: Calculate your chances of getting a work visa to live in top countries
I don't believe there are visa requirements between EU countries, you might want to fix that (maybe skip the EU countries for EU citizen, or give 100%?)
marcv81··on I have been hired for more than 10 years, and I have this simple rule
I've had stalkers before and it'd freak me out if I received a thank you note from someone I did not exchange contact details with.
marcv81··on Productivity Is About Attention Management
I used to think like you until I met a coworker. He could not code to save his life, nobody in the team liked working with him. Until one day we had a boring data entry task. He could do it for hours at a time, and barely made any mistake. This experience taught me something.
marcv81··on Making My Own USB Keyboard from Scratch
There is no need to spend time on the hardware either, but OP wanted to learn something.

For those who might be interested here is my firmware project: https://github.com/marcv81/umk. I like to think it's more approachable than QMK, at the cost of features.

marcv81··on China cracks down on religion, crosses burned at Christian churches
For what it's worth my anecdotal experience is exactly the opposite. Sample size = 4 people.
marcv81··on Watch Plants Light Up When They Get Attacked
"That again, they respond to stimuli but don't feel pain like an animal."

I don't feel this is a valid argument. We only really know how pain feels to us, but we can guess it also applies to other humans, animals, etc. That we cannot imagine how it feels to respond to negative stimuli as a plant should not invalidate the possibility that it is unpleasant.

marcv81··on OBike Refund in Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia
It was SGD19 for students or SGD49 for anyone else.
marcv81··on Has there been progress in philosophy?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan
marcv81··on Learning to program is getting harder
Most manholes are round because that is the most practical shape such that the cover cannot fall in. There are actually other shapes, but they are usually hinged and most costly.
marcv81··on Ask HN: How much do you sleep?
Many activity trackers will provide stats about how much you sleep, and how you compare with the rest of the population. I appreciate your question is about HN readers rather than fitness nerds, but there might be an overlap.
marcv81··on Time for Makefiles to Make a Comeback
Friends don't let friends write Makefiles at all. The author does not appear to be familiar with them, except for the trivial examples in this post.
marcv81··on Less Weird Quaternions Using Geometric Algebra
What I meant is that quaternions don't seem any weirder to me than sin/cos.
marcv81··on Less Weird Quaternions Using Geometric Algebra
Quarternions aren't weird. With a 2D angle we use 2 numbers (sin and cos) to calculate vector rotations. It turns out that in 3D we use 4 numbers.
marcv81··on A brief history of credit cards
I was not trying to talk other countries down. For what it's worth you can't survive in France without a checkbook: it's the only way to pay for some transactions. Sad.

Also the debit cards we're talking about do both credit and debit. Not sure they disqualify.

marcv81··on A brief history of credit cards
Like a few others who replied, I grew up in France. Technically debit cards indeed. Not sure card which do exclusively credit are a thing there.
marcv81··on A brief history of credit cards
I'm 35. I felt old talking about floppies and cassettes a few days ago. But I'm still young enough to not have known swipe cards :)
marcv81··on Pass: A standard Unix password manager
Objective difference: KeePass encrypts the names of the websites where you have accounts. I would not want to live without this feature.
marcv81··on Ask HN: Customer support asked for my login/password, what should I do?
I am not sure about naming the company, as I'm not sure it would help them (but maybe?). The device is in the IoT/fitness space. I don't think explaining good security practices to a customer support person is going to help as they are just following their script. The bug is irrelevant to the security issue of asking for a password; it is not a security bug itself.
marcv81··on What Is Proper Continuous Integration?
Yes, I suppose I am aware of their product now...
marcv81··on What Is Proper Continuous Integration?
Aw man!
marcv81··on What Is Proper Continuous Integration?
Yes, I realized after commenting. It's not a bad post, but I'm not sure why they tried their luck here.
marcv81··on What Is Proper Continuous Integration?
Not bashing at all (you are somewhat in a better place than my own organization) but a point could be made that you could break the code down into subprojects and manage dependencies.
marcv81··on What Is Proper Continuous Integration?
This is an okay and mostly correct introduction for anyone who has never heard of CI, but lacks any sort of depth. The author sounds like he just discovered the concept and wants to share it, but lacks practical experience.
marcv81··on [dead]
HR bloggers should learn humility. Their ranking is not worse than others, but it's not better either. I appreciate their input, but not the tone of the article.
marcv81··on Show HN: Mest – Place to talk with those you disagree with
Claire and Clare are no longer welcome!
marcv81··on Consistency should be more consistent
Consistency is already eventually consistent.
marcv81··on What’s wrong with Git? A conceptual design analysis
TL;DR: author blames his lack of understanding of the git concepts rather than the git concepts themselves.
marcv81··on The Clockwise/Spiral Rule of C declarations
This is the reason why golang declares the identifier before the type and the return value at the after the function parameters. This allows parsing any declaration from left to right.

How many dimensions would you prefer your hardcopy to span?
