Computers were a mistake.

marcocampos··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
86Box has been around for 10 years and it'ss a fork of an even older emulator called PCem which started in 2007. 86Box is an amazing cross-platform project if you want to emulate an entire computer (up to Pentium III era) as acurately as possible.
marcocampos··on Mom gets 6-month suspended sentence for letting 5-year-old walk to the pond
I started walking to school alone once I started 1st grade (at around age 7) and did it for about 5 years until my parents moved our family to a place outside of town where it was impractical to do so. I just checked Google Maps to be sure and it is about a 1.2Km / 0.75 miles, so a short walk for either an adult or a 7-year old.

A few months ago I had a heated argument with my father, stepmother and wife because I (half-joking/serious) told my almost 8-year daugher that next year we will start practicing her going to school by herself. You would not believe the stink all of them raised telling me I was irresponsible, yadda, yadda, what about child molesters/ kidnappers, yadda, yadda, too many cars and the usual non-sense you usually hear about this.

Again I went and checked on Google Maps just to be precise and the walk between our house and my daughters school is... 500 meters / 0.31 miles.

In a single generation we went from "your starting school for the first time? time to fend for yourself, you will do fine" to "you are a snowflake that needs to be protected at all times and must not be allowed to alone in any circunstances".

PS: To give more context, I don't live in the US but in a small EU country with a low crime rate, on a town that indeed is busy but very safe.

marcocampos··on It's Only When You Look Back
Also, what you described here is the plot for most B-grade dystopia movies.

chuckles We have a saying in Portugal: "If my grandma had wheels, she would be a truck."

I leave it up to you to figure it out.

marcocampos··on Spacedrive: Unify files from all your devices and clouds into one explorer
Is this going to be truly free and open source or is this one of those situations where for now it's "free" and then in the future people get slapped with some ridiculous pricing and/or license changes?

I don't mind paying for software but I'm starting to get a bit sick of investing my time and money on software that is just looking to generate buzz and then the other shoe drops...

marcocampos··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
Love Peter Watts' work but be warned that his writing is super depressing (in a good way), specially his Rifters Trilogy. My favorites are still Blindsight and it's follow-up, Echopraxia. The ideas on those books about sentient life are eye opening and something I still think is heavily debated in the scientific community.
marcocampos··on Ask HN: Modern Sci-Fi Book Recommendations?
I'm a bit conflicted about these books. The ideas are super interesting but the characters seem very "cardboard-like". Also they are bit too long and by the 3rd book I didn't care anymore... Still, pretty interesting on their own.
marcocampos··on Crafting Interpreters is available in print
Congrats man, I love the book and the final physical/PDF book layout/design is amazing!

How's Wayland + Gnome working for fractional scaling in HiDPI screens? Last time I tried some applications like Chrome, Firefox and others would be all blurry.
marcocampos··on Ask HN: What do you use for SSH key management of teams?
The process is pretty simple but their documentation is pretty good. When I was starting out I found this video which helped me get started: https://www.hashicorp.com/resources/manage-ssh-with-hashicor...
marcocampos··on Ask HN: What do you use for SSH key management of teams?
In the past I've used Hashicorp Vault to handle this kind of situation. Granted, it's an additional piece of infrastructure to manage but Vault has been pretty solid for this kind of situation and others where you need to safely manage secrets.

Do distros still come with original vi? My understanding is that when you type 'vi' you get a minimal version of vim on most (all?) distros theses days.

Most companies that I see using Bitbucket do so not because it's a good product but because it's usually cheap when you are already paying for JIRA and Confluence and because of the tight integration with those tools.

marcocampos··on Spain Runs Out of Workers with Almost 5M Unemployed
If companies all of the sudden didn't have to paid those 20% would I see that reflected on my paycheck? I bet you I wouldn't nor anyone else.

I've heard that falacy time and time again: "Oh, if I didn't have to pay so much taxes for each worker I could pay higher salaries."

marcocampos··on Spain Runs Out of Workers with Almost 5M Unemployed
In Portugal, Social Security taxation for a full-time employee is 11%.

42000€ per year gross salary lands you in the 28.5% income tax.

A yearly gross salary of 42000€ is about +/- 1800€ salary/month.

marcocampos··on Bash on Ubuntu on Windows
I'm using a combination of Ubuntu Server 16.04 VM (4GB RAM, 2-cores, 80GB HDD) + Virtualbox + MobaXterm (best SSH client on Windows). It works beautifully. I previously used Putty but it's a bit sparse regarding some options and gets confused sometimes when sending key codes via SSH session. Also I get the option of either using the Vbox shared folders or using the included SFTP client in MobaXterm that follows the current folder you're currently located in the terminal. It's a simple drag and drop. It even has a XServer included so I can run Linux desktop apps on Windows.

I got tired of running Linux directly on my desktop. Compiz crashes (worked in 14.04, not working in 14.10, started working again in 15.04, not working in 15.10...), can't keep my select sound output, terrible font rendering, awful HiDPI support, graphics drivers are a mess, and on and on...

Since I basically just need the non-graphical parts of Linux (Bash + Tmux + Vim) I'm very happy with this setup.

PS: Forgot to say that I have a very beefy machine (Skylake Core i7 4Ghz, 32GB DDR4, fastest consumer NVMe SSD from Samsung) but I've found that this setup works well on basically any machine.

Hi,

I'm Marco and I've been doing software development for about 12 years. I'm currently looking for new opportunities doing either full-stack or back-end development. I've built software used by both big (Fortune 500) and small (local businesses) companies and I pride myself for being self-motivated, focused and very easy to work with. My degree is both in Software Engineering and Business Management so I have both the skills and the experience of shipping a product, helping with sales and marketing and talking with customers.

If you're interested don't hesitate. Shoot me an email. I would love to know more about your business.

marcocampos··on Windows Kernel Architecture Internals (2010) [pdf]
For more about this, have a look at "Windows Internals" (6th edition is the latest, I believe) by Mark Russinovich, David Solomon and Alex Ionescu. It's an awesome book.
marcocampos··on The Cult of Work You Never Meant to Join
Almost 7 years ago, I started suffering from Alopecia Areata on my head. Also, my beard hair started to slowly turn grey/white. At that time I was working about 90h/week. I still suffer from it to this day and it's most active when I'm stressed about something in my life, more and bigger bald spots than usual.

Not to say that all cases of the disease are caused by stress, but I've meet a few people (via my dermatologist at the time) where stress seems to have some relation to it.

marcocampos··on Apple unveils a new Mac Mini
Yes, I know. I had one of those. It uses a "special" 65W TDP desktop class CPU. The cooling solution is pretty crappy and noisy as hell.
marcocampos··on Apple unveils a new Mac Mini
Intel NUC uses low TDP mobile CPUs. The new Mini uses regular TDP mobile CPUs. The fastest NUC tops at 1.3GHz with Intel HD 5000 graphics. The new Mini tops at 3.0GHz with Intel Iris graphics.

If you are refering to compact desktop computers there aren't many (none?) that use regular TDP mobile CPUs, have Intel Iris graphics and are virtually silent. The only ones that are similar or have better specs are the Gigabyte Brix Pro line of compact desktops and most of them are noisy or extremely noisy and have bad cooling solutions. I know because I've owned two and ended up selling both after only a few weeks. The only one that show promise is this [1] and I still have doubts that it will be any good...

My only issue with the new Mini's is that you used to be able to buy one with a quad core CPU and now that option is gone. Other than that...
