Zed is looking more and more prone to a fork by the day. :-/

Not to say no to innovation and experimentation in the age of LLMs, but meanwhile these get shipped, community contributions to sort basic filesystem events to ensure all files are monitored get sidelined without PR reviews and approvals for weeks/months.

marcalc··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
Seems like we need to popularise proper guides on how to convert our iCloud storage using self-hosted solutions. It's a shame though.
marcalc··on Apple announces Foundation Models and Containerization frameworks, etc
Use OrbStack for sometime, made my dev team’s m1 run our kubernetes pods in a much lighter fashion. Love it.
marcalc··on Running Qwen3 on your macbook, using MLX, to vibe code for free
This is my key points too. I love the power of having search engine on my laptop.
marcalc··on How to vibe code for free: Running Qwen3 on your Mac, using MLX
What do you mean by draft model? And how would one disable it? Cheers
marcalc··on Starlink is reducing your monthly service fee
That's a nice reduction. Which provider gives 600mbps for $30 (usd?) in Br?
marcalc··on Linux on an M1 Mac
Amazing stuff. Can't wait to try it out. Can it dual boot with my current macos install?
marcalc··on Forget about teaching kids to code
I've learned Logo when I was 8 (around 1993), the school also invited me to a robotics class that also used Logo, so I was able to not only draw interesting stuff with that little turtle but also learn how to use external interfaces to control stepper motors, led lights, etc. I think this was all very fun and resembled playing with Lego, allowing me to occasionally show some cool tech stuff to my friends.

Being visual and interactive is key, I believe, to engage with kids on what can be considered most of the times an abstract endeavour.

marcalc··on Ask HN: Fun video games for remote 15 person team bonding/fun?
GeoGuessr has been pretty fun for my team during remote hangouts. Highly recommend for the engagement of a very diverse multicultural team.
marcalc··on Asahi Linux for M1 Macs: progress report for September 2021
So good to read Marcan’s comments on this thread, so much context. Thank you!
marcalc··on Asahi Linux for M1 Macs: progress report for September 2021
That’s absolutely exciting. Thanks for all your efforts and the team’s! I hope to contribute with the project somehow, but you guys are on another “lower”-level :) Cheers
marcalc··on This is not a new year’s resolution
I was really into golang too to the point I started doing some production work on it, but after I tried crystal, it became a little dull. Crystal is a great language and surely has a bright future for those who love ruby syntax.
marcalc··on Apple Removes 'Time Remaining' Battery Life Indicator in Sierra 10.12.2
I agree with you. Those estimates were truly helpful and we could adapt in order to get more battery time. I don't feel good about Apple updates anymore. I used to be eager about beta tests and stuff, but nowadays I just hope they'll not touch anything else.
marcalc··on ASK HN: I can't remember the name of this app
haha That's it! Thank you! =)
marcalc··on ASK HN: I can't remember the name of this app
Yeah, the concept is exactly this. But I remember they had created an iPhone app that was being sold for $9.99. Can you remember? Thank youuuuuu!
marcalc··on What the Heck Is Happening at Apple?
I was eagerly waiting for the release of a new MacBook Pro, but when I saw the Apple keynote, my first/only reaction was to buy a new mid-2015 model to upgrade my mid-2009 one. Great upgrade, btw. I want to see what are apple's next moves, I just secured more 4-5 years on a great and stable laptop.

Just speculating: maybe Tim Cook wants to force a decline in sales in order to justify the killing of the low-performant MacBook line? Hackintoshes are fairly common nowadays and external keyboard and trackpad 2 can keep the great interaction provided by OSX.

marcalc··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
I love seeing these videos. For a long time I appreciate Gavan's work. I hope he succeeds in creating an RPG game engine.
marcalc··on Uber-Style Flight-Sharing Service Shot Down by U.S. Court
I think the point is not regulation, but some kind economic interventionism. Regulation should really be praised for a lot of services.
marcalc··on The Pirate Bay down, forever?
Wouldn't that beat the system?
marcalc··on Show HN: Nuesbyte v2
It's the simplest, yet it's a powerful candidate for my Google Reader migration IMO. :)
marcalc··on Rails 3.2 RC1: Faster dev mode & routing, explain queries, tagged logger, store
I remember reading your post some time ago, it really helped me creating a better view of this solution and is in fact our preferred method thanks to it. I still haven't implemented it for real and it would be great, if not much to ask you, if you could elaborate the impact of these changes in a post update? What do you think?
marcalc··on Rails 3.2 RC1: Faster dev mode & routing, explain queries, tagged logger, store
Also, if it is not much to ask, I know this is not the topic, but could you describe how you make this kind of separation? I have the same requirements for isolation and your experience in the matter would be valuable. :)
marcalc··on Rails 3.2 RC1: Faster dev mode & routing, explain queries, tagged logger, store
Could you? :)
marcalc··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
To the very end. That's incredible and sad. I don't know him personally, but knowing his biography, the kind of person he was and the impact he has on my daily life, man... i feel like having lost a close relative. Sad... :( May he rest in peace, for he have inspired us.
marcalc··on JQuery Mobile Alpha 3 Released
NEAT!
marcalc··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
Me either. This is the single best improvement I've made in the last 4 to 5 years. My MBP is awesome with this X25-M. I have adapted myself to use this little 160gb space very confortably using some external storage at home. This is great! I sure do recommend this to anyone!
marcalc··on Ask HN: anyone leave a high paying job to work at a startup?
That's great to hear. Recently (some months), myself and a friend got past through the same situation than yours. We have a project we were building at night for some other months and then we thought we should be courageous and give it shot and jump into the adventure of leaving you day-job to create a startup. With some dedicated search through our contacts, we have found an investor willing to help us feed our funds too and we have been making real progress towards our company's success. I must say, it has been great to work with my own project and a fellow partner that helps me through ups and downs to create this reality for us. :-) Everything just depends on our own effort and willingness. It's hard at first, but once we'd crossed that path, its invigorating that we can live without 9-5's.. :).. Thanks Hacker News to make us meet so many great people! Best wishes for you all.
