maratd··on China Cracks Down on Churches
This is horrendously inaccurate. Yes, if you're a part of a sect controlled by the Communist Party, you're ok. The idea that this is a viable alternative ... I'm beyond words. The fact that you cannot purchase books at the heart of those Abrahamic religions says enough. You cannot even practice in the safety of your own home.
maratd··on AT&T will put a fake 5G logo on its 4G LTE phones
How’s that Renault/Nissan thing going?
maratd··on SIPC Says It Has Serious Concerns About Robinhood's New Product
It's highly likely that Robinhood will do the same. It'll be parked in a money market, with the option of writing checks, etc. all of which you can do already with the other brokerages.

The new thing here I think is the ATM card and them covering the difference between the money market rate and 3%, which right now is less than 1%. They'll probably make up that difference via interchange fees when you use the debit card.

That SIPC thing though ... that's a bit of a wrench in the gears.

maratd··on Tesla's giant battery saved $40M during its first year, report says
> The li-ion externalities is mostly incurred once when mining.

I agree with your comment, but lithium is not mined. This is a common misconception and should be noted since we're chatting about externalities.

maratd··on Israeli Software Helped Saudis Spy on Khashoggi, Lawsuit Says
They use deadly force against people firing missiles in the Gaza Strip, an area of land the residents are unable to leave and is under an Egyptian and Israeli blockade because it is controlled by Hamas, a terrorist organization. One side is considered "deadly" as they've killed over 150 people, many of them children because they are used as human shields by the terrorists, while the other side has killed 1, because they're incompetent.

Fixed that for you.

maratd··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
Not quite. When he took power, he ruthlessly enforced atheism and slaughtered anyone who stood in his way. Only when he was fighting for his life with the Nazis did he find the Orthodox Church useful in his efforts. After he was done with the Nazis, he went back to his old tricks.

maratd··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
> The state became the church, its leaders became the saints.

Can you name a single attempt to eradicate religion that didn't end up with the very description you provide?

maratd··on ‘I’m Broke and Mostly Friendless, and I’ve Wasted My Whole Life’
> Today we are experimenting with new phenomena

Pretty sure every generation from the beginning of time has thought of itself as a pioneer exposed to new forces and new phenomena. It's a bit arrogant to think that you're the one and only.

There are a multitude of other changes that have transformed our environment (agriculture, spoken language, written language, barter, commerce, etc.) over the millennia.

> There is no need for anything mystical to be involved.

And yet something mystical has been involved for thousands of years, in virtually every culture. When we tried to eradicate it forcefully (communism), bad things happened. Perhaps there's more to it than you think?

maratd··on Stamos says the US must ‘come together to protect’ democracy from misinformation
> signal to noise ratio

This is another euphemism for hearing ideas you disagree with. You choose who to friend/follow/read. Occasionally those people will say things you don't agree with.

> you don’t know what information to trust

Just because someone landed a job at [fill in traditional media outlet] does not make them more trustworthy. You're simply being exposed to the reality that their bullshit is just as much bullshit as everything else.

maratd··on Google and Facebook are monopolies. Does it matter? [audio]
> What matters is whether it's hard for others to offer alternatives

It is monstrously hard to offer alternatives. The barrier to entry is the massive engineering effort to compete.

Google is not just a search engine. It is an email server and client, a calendar, an online office suite, a cloud provider, a mobile platform, and I can go on listing things to fill up several pages of what Google is.

Even if DuckDuckGo is a better search engine, it offers 1% of the feature set and can't compete. The engineering effort needed for it to compete effectively is astronomical. Imagine what it would take to build out all of those Google services that are tightly integrated and not just build them out (like Microsoft), but build them out well. That is the barrier to entry.

maratd··on Gaza: Coding in a conflict zone
No, but they do control their border with Gaza, which is as locked down as those ports you mention.
maratd··on Gaza: Coding in a conflict zone
> The UN disagrees.

The UN is a political animal controlled by political interests.

Common sense can be used here. Gaza shares more border with Egypt than with Israel.

maratd··on Gaza: Coding in a conflict zone
> Instead the Israeli stance is noted as being the same as Egypt

Because it is.

maratd··on New Zealand travellers refusing digital search now face $5k Customs fine

maratd··on Tesla meets Q3 production goals of 50,000 to 55,000 Model 3s
Tesla is a luxury car manufacturer and isn't competing with GM/Ford/etc.
maratd··on Walmart Requires Lettuce, Spinach Suppliers to Join Blockchain
> There’s nothing being done here that couldn’t or shouldn’t just be handled with a traditional database.

I generally agree with you and if I had to implement the solution, I wouldn't do so with blockchain.

That said, if there's a concern about data manipulation from Walmart's side (that is, employees erasing or modifying the data), blockchain would help with that.

maratd··on Google Scientist Resigns Over “Forfeiture of Our Values” in China
> This would also negatively affect the United States.

How much money are our values worth? If we're willing to prostrate ourselves in front of dictators and tyrants who twist the rules of the game and compromise our values, let's at least put a number on it.

If, on the other hands, we're willing to do business with every butcher and murderer out there, let's stop pretending otherwise and stop referring to "our values" in every corporate meeting. They clearly don't exist.

maratd··on Google Scientist Resigns Over “Forfeiture of Our Values” in China
Violating someones privacy and actual censorship, while both terrible, are in completely different categories. Censorship is far worse and is almost always a precursor to violence against those being censored.
maratd··on Google Scientist Resigns Over “Forfeiture of Our Values” in China
> The lure of a market of a billion people is an illusion. The game is very much rigged.

They know they won't be allowed first place, but they're willing to compromise themselves for a second place finish.

We really need to start incentivizing executives to pursue more than just raw numbers.

maratd··on Tesla to achieve leading $100/kWh battery cell cost this year, says investor
Sounds just fine when I read it. If you don't have something in production, you have nothing.
maratd··on Tesla to achieve leading $100/kWh battery cell cost this year, says investor
Sure, because they have nothing to push.
maratd··on Tesla to achieve leading $100/kWh battery cell cost this year, says investor
> Why are Worm Capital and the YouTube guy getting factory tours?

Because they're helping the bottom line? That's Tesla's job. To help itself.

Are you proposing they give tours to short sellers?

maratd··on Tesla to achieve leading $100/kWh battery cell cost this year, says investor
> And surely your judgement must be clouded if you think Tesla has the best in class self driving technology.

They have the best in class self driving technology that's actually in production. Until I can actually sit in one of Waymo's cars, it doesn't mean much.

maratd··on Mercedes Readies First Tesla Rival in $12B Attack
> hmm, aside from the BS that the model s fits 7 people....

With the rear-facing seats, it does. Although uncomfortably. You're better off with the Model X for that many.

> “normal” car = 20k

Yes, let's compare a value car with a luxury car. Brilliant. How much does a BMX X6 or a Mercedes AMG GLE cost?

Here's a hint: https://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicles/model/class-GLE/mode...

After you subtract government incentives and fuel savings, the costs are identical. That's why Tesla actually sells cars.

maratd··on HUD Files Housing Discrimination Complaint Against Facebook

maratd··on HUD Files Housing Discrimination Complaint Against Facebook
What exactly is your argument? That if there's a bad law on the books, we shouldn't have laws?
maratd··on Ask HN: Advice on finding an entry level job in NYC?
Since you lived there, you should know there are plenty of independent grocery stores that stock all those items and are cheaper than WF. And I gave you the example of Trader Joes, on top of everything, which is definitely cheaper than WF.

What exactly are you arguing? That the poor and middle class of NY shop for their food at WholeFoods? Are you bonkers?

maratd··on Ask HN: Advice on finding an entry level job in NYC?
> In my experience Whole Foods is the cheapest grocery store in the city

Have you been to china town? Yeah, sure, if you compare whole foods to other upscale groceries, that can be the case ... but even Trader Joes is cheaper.

There are two groups of people in New York. Those who get it and those who don't. And those who don't, pay twice as much for everything, including groceries.

maratd··on Ask HN: Advice on finding an entry level job in NYC?
Yes, New York is expensive. You know what though? All those other places ... they're not New York. You can live in Boston, but then you're living in Boston.
maratd··on USA Temperature: can I sucker you?
> I disagree that evolution can be "understood" by one person readily explaining it to someone else.

Darwin did just fine in the Origin of Species ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Origin_of_Species ).

> Short explanations between laypeople is essentially propaganda, no matter which side of the issue they are on.

While this is correct, would you like to point out a long explanation that will overcome this? A book, perhaps?

One that doesn't rely on computer models, all of which, in every field, are absolute trash because they can be twisted to say whatever you want them to say as demonstrated in the very article we're discussing.

How is it that Darwin didn't need computer models to make his point, but climate science is empty without them?
