mamon··on Israel may have destroyed Iranian centrifuges simply by cutting power
Israel is not a democracy. It is a country ruled by religious fanatics, basically. If you are not a Jew, you do not profess Judaism you are denied some of the civil rights, maybe not officially, but practicaly. Think of all the Palestinians there.

If one person thinks you're an asshole they might simply be wrong about you. If everyone in the world thinks you're an asshole then you, almost by definiton, are one.

There's a reason why there's a separate word in most languages for "anti-semitism" but not for "anti-italianism" or "anti-brasilianism".

mamon··on Israel may have achieved herd immunity against Covid-19
Oh, so that's why they stopped paying Pfizer for the vaccines :)

mamon··on Intel 3rd gen Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake): generationally big, competitively small
But if the workload is not CPU-bound then why would they care about upgrading their CPUs to more performant ones, like Ice Lake Xeons?
mamon··on Programming is hard
Test being difficult is not a problem, we want our lawyers to be competent, after all. The more important part is if it is fair. In Poland bar exam had been famous for near impossible questions, which were only answered correctly by applicants that knew them in advance, which typically were family members of already practicing attorneys/judges.
mamon··on Leaked phone number of Mark Zuckerberg reveals he is on Signal
Probably changed the phone number after it had been leaked.
mamon··on A categorized list of all Java and JVM features since JDK 8 to 16
>> Java has all methods virtual and testing could be done without requiring the interface.

Not sure what you mean by that. I thought that interface/implementation divide is the way to implement virtual calls. Unless you want testing frameworks to do bytecode instrumentation.

mamon··on AI skills are worth less than you think (2019)
I think you meant "seven-figure" because "six-figure" is a salary that Google pays to fresh college grads.
mamon··on PayPal launches crypto checkout service
I'm not even sure what the use case for PayPal is - what can it do that Visa or MasterCard cannot?
mamon··on Visa moves to allow payment settlements using cryptocurrency
You do realize that Bitcoin transaction fees are like 100x higher that those charged by Visa?

Also, most cryptocurrencies have scalability problems, it won't be easy for them to replace traditional payments, because they cannot handle billions of transactions per day.

mamon··on U.S. rent has increased 175% faster than household income over past 20 years
70 floor tower is a bit extreme. What would really benefit places like San Francisco is replacing single family homes with 3-4 stories apartment buildings. Such a low buildings still make neighborhood look nice and cozy, while increasing density 10 times.

Lockdowns simply don't work. How do I know? Because Sweden, which for a long time refused to introduce any COVID restrictions at all, has less deaths per 1M people (1317) than France (1425), which introduced full lockdown.

Also, Texas recently lifted all the restrictions couple weeks ago, and number of cases and deaths is still falling.

I'm sure there are more examples like that.

mamon··on Intel chief Pat Gelsinger: Too many chips made in Asia
Corruption actually makes doing business EASIER for a company with stockpiles of cash. It can even help you avoid taxes. So it is not a problem, it's an opportunity.
mamon··on High IQs are associated with mental and physical disorders
Variation hypothesis actually makes sense from evolutionary point of view: you need as many women as you can get to produce offsprings, but only small number of men suffices to impregnate them all. So men are disposable, therefore they are where the mother nature does its risky experiments.
mamon··on High IQs are associated with mental and physical disorders
What I find interesting on that page is that the more recent (past 2-3 decades) college preparatory tests (e.g. SAT) are not accepted as substitutes to IQ tests. Shows the trend of dumbing down the tests, I guess.
mamon··on Google Removed ClearURLs Extension from Chrome Web Store
But isn't that running locally, using NeuralEngine of the processor? If they do not upload that info to their servers then I'm okay with it.
mamon··on The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out
Maybe they mean "mRNA vaccines"? COVID vaccine is the first of this kind, so some side effects, especially long term ones, are still unknown. It's still unlikely that they would be very serious but we won't know for sure until 10 years from now.
mamon··on Result from LHCb experiment challenges the Standard Model
I think it is a clickbait - you see new title on their main page and click only to realize that you've read that before.
mamon··on EU rebuffs UK calls to ship AstraZeneca Covid vaccines from Europe
So EU was focused on negotiating the lowest price for itself instead of ensuring on time delivery of vaccines and now that they realized their mistake they try to bully AstraZeneca into prioritizing their contract over others. Great move EU /s
mamon··on AMD Expected to Become TSMC's Second Largest Customer
This mitigates only half of the problem - yes, China won't be able to use the factory for themselves, but if you take a closer look at the list of the largest TSMC customers from the article those are mostly American companies. Destroying TSMC factory would hurt the US disproportionately more than it would China. Which might matter in the current China-US trade war.

Also "planting bombs at the factory" scenario is one of the reasons why all armies in the world have spies and special forces - you send your special ops soldiers before your main attack to take control of the facility and prevent initiating the self-destruction protocol. I'm not saying it always works, but China can take a calculated risk here, since they win either way.

mamon··on AMD Expected to Become TSMC's Second Largest Customer
How many American soldiers station in Taiwan? And more importantly: how many nukes?

Since the answer to both is "zero" TSMC actually decreases Taiwan's security - it gives China a strong incentive to attack, with zero means to prevent it on US side.

mamon··on I employ 1,200 people and have no HR department [video]

mamon··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
There is some data suggesting that Waymo cars might avoid collisions better than humans https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/8/22315361/waymo-autonomous-...

Meanwhile, Tesla autopilot accelerates towards the walls or parked vehicles. Tell me again how Tesla is "at the forefront in the field".

mamon··on Unironically using Kubernetes for my personal blog
Nothing silly about it. Yes, with one node you don't have High Availability, but you get other benefits, like a standardized way to manage configuration.
mamon··on GeForce RTX 3060 Ethereum Mining Restrictions Have Been Broken
This doesn't make sense to me: why don't they simply price their cards 3x higher and sell them all to miners? Selling to the highest bidder is kind of "Capitalism 101". Their profits would skyrocket.

And what about gamers? Well... they can buy used previous gen cards from miners.
