malz··on Facebook Must Really Suck At Machine Learning
It's not just a suspicion, it's right in the title of articles like "Facebook's Fight Against Fake News Was Undercut by Fear of Conservative Backlash"

malz··on Maine Ranked Choice Voting Initiative Approved
Character matters, though. Some might argue it matters more than a checklist of policy positions.

On the other hand: a label like "democrat" or "republican" in many ways accomplishes what you suggest. Many people just vote the party line knowing what the party typically stands for.

malz··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
Here's another from this year. http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2016/05/gop-quickly-...

13% think Obama is a Christian. 77% are not sure if he was born in the US.

I agree the "mindset of the people" is more complex than this, and such a belief about Obama may not be the main driver of their voting behavior.

But they are being truthful about saying they believe what they believe, right? They either believe it or they don't. In my eyes this kind of mass susceptibility to conspiracy theories is a huge sociological phenomenon that should be explored.

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but Trump has no chance of helping those workers, except by bussing them to New York to polish his acres of marble and glass.

For a "law and order" candidate it's also curious to propose removing laws. Of course, in his mind the necessary laws are those that constrain personal behavior (drugs, vice, abortion). The laws to repeal will be those that "cost jobs" by protecting worker safety, consumers, or the environment.

I actually think it's unlikely for Sanders, but Biden likely would have won, if he had run. Many many many people saw this coming and begged him to enter the race. Biden has a bond with the blue-collar workers who fled to Trump, he has a compelling life story and is free of any clintonian scandals.
malz··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
Two-thirds of Republicans still believe Obama was born outside the US. What possible justification do they have for that belief? Let's stack up our beliefs and see whose match more closely with "facts."

>Education, understanding, compassion. Not ridicule.

How much did they try to understand Obama voters? Not at all. We got 8 years of racist attacks, "you lie!", and scorched earth tactics. I appreciate your invitation to be magnanimous but I'm not feeling it yet.

That's exactly the railing against "political correctness" that got so much attention. "Not PC" is code for "freedom to believe and say hateful things about other groups of people."

And the debt was increased by actions like bailing out the auto industry, saving 800,000 jobs. All those workers then voted for Trump.

Why is your kid playing a sport? To have fun. What's more fun, winning or losing? Winning. That's all there is to it.
malz··on Why We're Living in the Age of Fear
Over 100 million of us watched The Day After when it aired, a TV movie about nuclear war. So not only was it top of mind, the range of media alternatives was so much smaller.

malz··on An Important Message About Yahoo User Security
So covering up a known in-progress security breach is standard procedure? Instead of telling your users to change their passwords and so on?

Personally, I demand criminal investigation and at least a $1000 fine per account breached.

malz··on Uber starts self-driving car pickups in Pittsburgh
The difference between the idea (fire the drivers) and the execution (develop decades' worth of cutting-edge AI which kills people if it fails) is huge, though. You don't expect your usual fancy-app startup to develop this kind of technology.
malz··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
I can agree entirely with this. I used to drink Snapple iced teas like they were water. After cutting back on sugar, I can't stomach the stuff now. I like sweetness: I'll add a splash of lemonade to unsweetened iced tea. But the presweetened stuff is 10x sweeter than my palate tolerates now.
malz··on How the Sugar Industry Shifted Blame to Fat
Have you cut back on carbohydrates too? I'm just curious, since I've eliminated sugary drinks, but I find it harder to cut back on bread, pasta and so on.
malz··on Facebook recommended that a psychiatrist’s patients friend each other

malz··on Web Scraping in 2016
> misuse of other's resources against their will

Nonsense, there is no implication that this activity is illicit. Many sites (I have worked with hundreds) are happy to be included in my service, but don't have the technical ability to provide a data feed. They were delighted when I told them I could aggregate their content without any extra work on their part.

We respect TOS, we respect robots.txt and so on. Just because you study scraping techniques doesn't mean you intend to break the law.

> Breaking captchas and the like is basically blackhat work

Um, captchas only work if they work. If breaking them is trivial, they shouldn't exist. Don't shoot the messenger for pointing out the front door is unlocked.

malz··on EpiPen Price Rise Sparks Concern for Allergy Sufferers
How many people would die if the only manufacturer of the device goes out of business?

It's not a flippant question; their only competitor pulled their product off the market, because the cost of fixing bugs was too great. How would it have helped to force them to charge less?

malz··on The Mystery of the Missing Hotel Toothpaste (2013)
Soaps and shampoos are a bit of a luxury item, which is why there are whole stores like "Bath & Body Works" that just sell them. It's a marketing opportunity for the manufacturers to pay hotels to put out their mini-bottles for free. There's no such niche for boutique toothpastes.

The media unquestioningly reported the $1 billion number. This article at least admits "it's unclear where that $1 billion figure came from", but where's the shame about being manipulated into reporting completely made-up numbers?
