If you host your source on GitHub, you should definitely check out Gitter. It's free for public repos and the integration is great; you get Markdown, integrations, IRC bridge, etc. Check for example the Marionette community to get a feeling of it: https://gitter.im/marionettejs/backbone.marionette. Disclaimer: I work at Gitter, feel free to ping me at https://gitter.im/malditogeek
malditogeek··on Ask HN: Skype, but properly peer-to-peer?
I've been working on a Node.js server (signaling server in Node over WS, frontend built in Backbone) https://github.com/malditogeek/vmux give it a go. There's a running instance at http://vmux.co
malditogeek··on Ask HN: Skype, but properly peer-to-peer?
https://apprtc.appspot.com/ and https://appear.in are probably the most KISS Skype alternatives out there. Of course, built on top of WebRTC.

I've been working myself on an open source alternative http://vmux.co (code: https://github.com/malditogeek/vmux) but it requires a Twitter account to log in which my pose a problem to your dad. (The upcoming version will allow you to use it without an account tho)

To the people that want to host their own "skype alternatives" have in mind that it's not just serving the HTML+JS. WebRTC needs a way to bootstrap the P2P connection, the so called signaling, vmux provides a signaling mechanism using websockets but you'll still need a STUN server (I'm using the Google's one) and optionally a TURN server to relay users behind crazy NATs.

OP, I've been using leveldb-ruby[1] for some time. Is yours just an alternative implementation or are there any other improvements I'm missing?

Hey niggler, totally agree. If it was a product I'd definitely do it but is just a hack. If you're still interested in checking it out, the code (and screenshot) is here: https://github.com/malditogeek/lalo
malditogeek··on Show HN: An experiment - IRC channel from just a URL
OP here, this is related with a story I've seen today: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5330020

I've been working on a similar concept but based on IRC.

Once authenticated with your Twitter account you can join a room using the URL, the path represents a channel. Being IRC based means that you can join the same channel using an IRC client.

The code is here: https://github.com/malditogeek/lalo

malditogeek··on [Show HN] An experiment - Group Chat from just a URL
Interesting. I've been working on a very similar concept but based on IRC. There's a version running here: http://lalo-g7stltno.dotcloud.com/

Once authenticated with your Twitter account you can join a room using the URL, the path represents a room/channel. The cool thing is that you can also join to that channel using a standard IRC client as well.

The code is here: https://github.com/malditogeek/lalo

The idea is good, but isn't anything new. And right now Diaspora looks like vaporware...

Instead, the One Social Web guys [http://onesocialweb.org] are developing an open source decentralized XMPP based social network that works and is based on solid standards. And you can go, grab the code and try it right now. But they don't appear in the mainstream media...

IMHO, instead of raise money and start looking at their own bellybutton they should join efforts with other initiatives and go for something bigger.

malditogeek··on Pirate Coelho
I love CC, but I think is more a matter of 'negotiation' between the writer and the publisher. Let me explain...

There's an Argentinian journalist/writer, Hernan Casciari, who became popular after he won the Deutsche Welle Best Blog in 2005 [1]. It was a fictional blog about a 'fat woman' he was impersonting. The idea of the blog, was also sold to make theatre and a TV series. Casciari success was in part thanks to the Internet, and he always had this clear. The day a publisher came to his door inclusive. He came to an agreement with a spanish publisher [2] that allows him to publish the books for free in his blog the same day it's available in the store shelfs. For instance, recently he made available his last book [3].

I don't actually know if he's using CC or other special license for his work, but if the author has the will to share his work freely and make a business out of it, it's possible.

Awesome idea, awesome product. Just pre-ordered mine :D
malditogeek··on Stanislav Shalunov: Will P2P change storage?
P2P is already changing the filesystem panorama. Right now, Dropbox is the hype but the real rocket sauce is in Wuala [1], which was recently bought by Lacie. I can see, in the near future, a wave of external "disks" bundled with the Wuala filesystem offering loads of gigs "for free".

Also, I've been trying other P2P storage solutions like Tahoe[2] and totally loved it. It's GPL, Twisted based, portable and very easy to install.

malditogeek··on Efficient Editing With vim
TIP for the Vim lovers out there:

Firefox: you can do a quick search hitting '/' Skype [Mac]: you can replace text in your last sent message with the 's/<old>/<new>/' syntax

I would love to hear about other apps with Vim-ish behavior :)

VIM IS FULL OF WIN!

malditogeek··on Efficient Editing With vim
I've been using it for a long time and totally love it. I have the same mappings I have for Vim, for open and move between tabs and so on. It's an awesome tool.
