makerofspoons··on Google to end support for OnHub routers in 2022
How scummy, not even a banner saying that support is ending.
makerofspoons··on Tesla tells customers it will not honor retroactive Full Self-Driving pricing
When are they going to rip the bandaid off that they aren't going to produce the Cybertruck? https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a37979446/tesla-cybertruck...
makerofspoons··on Dell's easy-to-repair Luna Concept laptop aims to reduce waste, carbon emissions
I love it, but it's a shame that there is only a handwavy promise that parts of the design will be for sale in coming years. Is there a modular laptop available today?
makerofspoons··on Biometric expert shows an easy way to spoof fingerprint scanning devices
The title should probably indicate this is from 2005.
makerofspoons··on Food is more expensive than it has been in decades
Alternatively you could say food is now the cheapest it will be for the rest of our lives: https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/13/business/food-prices-inflatio...
makerofspoons··on US Should Create Strategy by End of '22 to Reduce Increasing Ocean Plastic Waste
We could stimulate the domestic textile industry to mass produce clothing without plastic fibers while phasing out fabrics that are depositing microplastics in the oceans: https://phys.org/news/2021-01-arctic-microplastic-pollution....
makerofspoons··on MangoDB has a new name
"Moreover, a representative of MangoDB Inc. asked us to stop using the MangoDB name on our website, GitHub, or anywhere else, due to similarity or potential confusion."

Should this have read that a representative of MongoDB asked them to stop using the name MangoDB? Or was there an existing MangoDB project?

makerofspoons··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
Safari is famously behind on supporting PWAs, most notably their implementation is missing web push notifications.
makerofspoons··on Evergrande teeters on edge of default as $148M payment falls due
AP is reporting the default is official: https://apnews.com/press-release/pr-newswire/business-china-...
makerofspoons··on Macron says France will build new nuclear energy reactors
Carbon tariffs would be a good way to even the playing field in that scenario.
makerofspoons··on When is the revolution in architecture coming?
You might love "Liminal Spaces". There are a few blogs with collections of images, but I think my favorite place to view them is the subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/LiminalSpace/
makerofspoons··on Decades of disinformation by fossil fuels halted US climate policy
We need a Climate Nuremberg.
makerofspoons··on Orbital Reef: Commercial space station by BlueOrigin, Sierra Space, Boeing
It seems like too big of a leap for a consortium of companies that have yet to field a single manned orbital vehicle to be planning a space station.
makerofspoons··on Elizabeth Holmes urged employees to hide Theranos’ lab equipment from inspectors
Interestingly Holmes' father was a VP at Enron: https://www.forbes.com/sites/petercohan/2019/02/17/4-startli...
makerofspoons··on Tesla pushes U.S. to boost fuel economy penalties
I'm a Bolt driver with the opposite experience- every charger around me is a ChargePoint, EVGo, or Electrify America. This isn't generally true across the country of course, but I generally drive in the Denver/Boulder, Colorado area which is somewhere I would expect considerable EV infrastructure. Some do have a single Tesla connector among a set of several J1772 connectors, although most commonly I see several J1772 connectors and one for Nissan Leafs.
makerofspoons··on Amazon Is Lobbying the US Government to Make Pot Legal
Amazon is pushing for more defense contracts: https://www.wsj.com/articles/tech-industry-seeks-bigger-role...

To do that you need engineers who can hold a security clearance. To hold a security clearance you can't violate federal law despite what your state laws say is legal. I think this is about more than warehouse employees.

makerofspoons··on Millennials Not Having Babies Because of Climate Change
Solar geoengineering isn't a solution for ocean acidification, and once we start we have to keep doing it until we figure out carbon sequestration.
makerofspoons··on We leaked the upcoming IPCC report
"Delayed action increases challenges to both economic and societal feasibility after 2030"

This is coming from the historically conservative IPCC. They're still incorporating carbon capture technology that doesn't exist or doesn't exist at scale in projections (see C2.4 on page 17 of the PDF). While they admit in C8.2 (page 23) that these technologies are still in pilot stages and require commercialization, I would have liked there to have been more analysis of the risk that these technologies won't work at scale in section C10. Is it a near certainty we figure CCS out and the challenges are political and economic, or are there uncertain scientific and engineering challenges that remain?

makerofspoons··on Surveys show Americans want more walkable cities
There's a great Canadian cartoon that explored that idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFaHArkYLsM
makerofspoons··on Observational evidence that cloud feedback amplifies global warming
The main takeaway is that it is very unlikely that the climate sensitivity to a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere is less than 2C, meaning the optimistic scenarios for climate change are also unlikely.
makerofspoons··on FAA releases TRUST: Free online training required to fly drones recreationally
This is great news. About a month ago a scofflaw drone pilot wiped out an entire generation of elegant terns: https://news.yahoo.com/generation-seabirds-wiped-drone-o-110...

More training and harsher penalties need to be proportional to the amount of damage recreational flyers can do.

makerofspoons··on Newsom Misled Public About Wildfire Prevention Effort Ahead of Worst Fire Season
These environments are getting so hot and dry that it's very possible the forest will not be renewed after a fire: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2196213-forests-are-bec...
makerofspoons··on Southwest Airlines grounds its entire fleet amid giant computer outage
If you give users the right self-service options, they'll resolve it for themselves between the start of the outage and when they expected to fly. They'll rebook or take their money and go.
makerofspoons··on Southwest Airlines grounds its entire fleet amid giant computer outage
Not having enough human capacity for a random event is reasonable enough, but between their app and their website there should be a smooth, automated, and easy way for customers to rebook or get their money back to book with another airline. That shouldn't require going through a person, especially if there are not enough people available.
makerofspoons··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
Dr. Peter Carter, an IPCC expert reviewer, makes the point that not only is breaking the 2C threshold by 2100 likely, but also that the equilibrium temperature increase is much higher than 2C: https://twitter.com/PCarterClimate/status/139707600859175731...
makerofspoons··on The U.S. corn belt has lost a third of its topsoil
We're ~60 years from running out of topsoil globally if we continue degrading it at the current rate: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/only-60-years-of-...
makerofspoons··on Voltswagen of America
This feels like an IHOB/IHOP-style publicity stunt.
makerofspoons··on US Is One Step Closer to Having Program to Study Blocking Sun
We are past the point where stopping burning fossil fuels or planting trees is sufficient to meet the Paris goal of 1.5 degrees of warming. The IPCC scenarios now include some degree of geoengineering in the form of carbon sequestration: https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/sites/2/2019/09/SR15...

This technology is unproven- should it fail to be developed and scale then a sunshade might be on the table.

makerofspoons··on Starship goes up. Starship goes down. But is the program moving forward?
The shuttle also killed more people in spaceflight than any other space vehicle in history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_spaceflight-related_ac...
makerofspoons··on Low-Cost Multi-touch Whiteboard using the Wiimote (2007) [video]
I love this project. In high school I started a group in my school district to collect or buy the remotes and install these in teacher's classrooms. We installed over 200 of them! Back then there was a healthy community online of people porting the software and building and selling the infrared pens. I learned to solder for the first time turning dollar store plastic pointers into infrared pens. The best setup was to use a 3D printed clip to mount the remote to the drop ceilings in the classrooms- this made it more difficult for a student or teacher to obstruct the camera while using the board and made it harder for someone to accidentally knock the remote which would then require the teacher to recalibrate (a process involving tapping targets at the boundaries of the projected screen).
