makalumhenders··on Show HN: Investment Calculator – A simple retirement calculator
For those interested in learning the fundamentals behind that calculator, I wrote a book that can be read in an hour, and received praise from Derek Sivers, David Heinemeier Hansson, and many others.

You can read it for free online, or download the PDF (also free).

If you like it, I just ask that you help spread the word. Starting investing when your young is so, so important. And unfortunately the core essentials are often diluted with unnecessary complexities in most of the mainstream books. That's why I wrote this one.

makalumhenders··on BitTorrent Sync vs. Dropbox
I guess you didn't read the part of the article about over-the-LAN syncing.
makalumhenders··on Why our product went viral in Brazil for the wrong reasons
Thanks rafski, yep that was exactly why we created the app -- the appeal of something Gowalla-like, but without the social part.
makalumhenders··on Why our product went viral in Brazil for the wrong reasons
Thanks for the tips, soneca
makalumhenders··on Why our product went viral in Brazil for the wrong reasons
Thanks everybody. Our first reaction was, "Oh what a disaster!" but then we thought, "Nothing we can do now, and it is pretty funny so let's just roll with it!" BTW, Rego is really being well received — it seems like a lot of people (us included!) needed something Gowalla-like but without the social part.
makalumhenders··on Why our product went viral in Brazil for the wrong reasons
What Richard said is why I didn't mention the meaning in the title; it'd be a spoiler! Anyway, Gizmodo in Brazil covered the app in an article entitled, "This is not a HANDS-ON review!" which got thousands of RTs and Facebook likes. We then responded with that video, and they followed up with a second article -- glad to see we were taking the news in good humor!
makalumhenders··on How to calculate your hourly rate
The question I still don't see answered is — are you proposing to charge based on the value you might deliver, or the value you actually deliver?

If Apple ask you to bid on creating the iPhone, how would value that? (The world hasn't seen an iPhone.) If you're capable of designing the iPhone and the best your competitor is capable of is creating a Galaxy, would the two bids be equal under the assumption of ideal value pricing?

makalumhenders··on How to calculate your hourly rate
Tam, it's not easy to determine value. Are you going to charge for the value you might deliver, or the value you actually deliver? How will you determine the value you actually deliver? It's a tricky issue, I admit. But keep in mind that IDEO, having studied this issue hard, ultimately settled on charging by the hour.
makalumhenders··on How to calculate your hourly rate
Philip, if you can raise your rates, then how is there a maximum income? We raised our rates until supply balanced demand.
makalumhenders··on No-man’s land on the road to bootstrapping a start-up
I guess it would depend on the type of client services you do. We do specialized product design and development, and that's not something you can easily outsource.
makalumhenders··on No-man’s land on the road to bootstrapping a start-up
We don't have a problem saying no to new clients. Our problem tends to be dealing with expanding needs from existing clients.
