majestik··on Google Engineering Leader Urs Hölzle Shares Plan on Efficiency
Efficiency = fire half the SREs ?

Nice one Urs.

One of the only things Google has going for it is reliability of major services. Probably not the thing you want to risk.

Maybe instead you can kill Google WiFi, Google Fi, Google Pay, and countless other cost centers. There’s probably also a lot of front end designers you should fire.

majestik··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
I sense this Apple positivity in the news cycle will fade next week when the earnings report comes out.

majestik··on California jobs required to post pay range starting 2023
This is a step in the right direction for equitable pay.

Ideally would include full compensation be posted though, stocks, etc.

majestik··on Xlskubectl – a spreadsheet to control your Kubernetes cluster
I fear someone will take this project seriously.
majestik··on Amazon EKS Anywhere
In 8-12 months EKSA will either be very successful or will die, because it’s up against incumbent on-prem k8s so teams will either quickly see the benefits or it’ll quickly be dismissed as useless.

The target market seems to be infrastructure admins who have on-prem VMs and an AWS account and don’t like running their own K8s clusters. No idea what that market looks like in terms of size or interest in something like this, but I’m sure AWS did their homework.

majestik··on EV Charging Infrastructure in America Still Sucks
Title needs to append “... unless you have a Tesla”
majestik··on Pulumi 3.0
There’s nothing preventing you from using Pulumi with GitOps, in fact it’s an encouraged pattern.
majestik··on How to Be Clear
Dislike authors writing style.

Here’s an excerpt with bad grammar:

— If you’re struggling to picture what clear writing looks like, buy a copy of the Financial Times or The Economist. Pay attention to the way articles their are written, to the word choices and sentence structures. —-

majestik··on Waymo and Daimler Trucks partner on the development of fully autonomous trucks
Because trucks are more dangerous than cars.
majestik··on Why Apple believes it’s an AI leader–and why it says critics have it all wrong
> After a brief pause, he added: "I guess the biggest problem I have is that many of our most ambitious products are the ones we can't talk about and so it's a bit of a sales challenge to tell somebody, 'Come and work on the most ambitious thing ever but I can't tell you what it is.'"

JG, I don’t think that’s your “biggest problem” - Siri is. Your privacy centric on-device strategy limits your view of user feedback, Google gets a lot of shit wrong but they know how to transmit user data and understand their feedback.

5th gen and still beta.
majestik··on Apple engineer killed in Tesla crash had previously complained about autopilot
I rented a Tesla Model S from Enterprise recently and learned they don’t enable Autopilot due to liability issues.
majestik··on Apple Sues Nuvia’s CEO, a Former Employee
I don’t think I agree with your premise that Apple should allow employees to moonlight and poach their talent.
majestik··on Code Health: Respectful Reviews == Useful Reviews
These are all just basic principles of being a working professional, if any of this is non-obvious you have a culture problem not a code review problem.
majestik··on Holes in T. rex's skull now thought to have regulated body temperature
Gotta keep a cool head, T.
majestik··on Splunk acquires cloud monitoring service SignalFx for $1.05B
So the days of “Splunk for logs and X for monitoring” will change to “Splunk for logs and monitoring”

majestik··on Google Is Eating Our Mail
He’s been using the same IP address for his mail server for 15 years. It’s possible his IP is on a subnet range that regularly gets blacklisted by Gmail due to other actors on the subnet sending malicious email/spam to Gmail.
majestik··on ROSshow: ASCII art visualizations for robot sensor data
I don't understand why people think this is useful. ASCII art is probably the most low resolution way of visualizing something that should be as high resolution as possible.
majestik··on You Can’t just rename your IT Ops team and call it “DevOps”
TLDR: devops not in ('IT', 'SRE', 'IT Ops')
majestik··on Shane Parrish has become an unlikely guru for Wall Street
If this guy were Russian there would be stories about the KGB infiltrating Wall St, but because he’s Canadian he’s just running a “knowledge community.”

majestik··on Anthony Levandowski is back with a new self-driving startup, called Kache.ai
Is it “Kache” because Levandowski still has a cache of trade secrets from Waymo to use here illegally?

Or Kache like “I need some cash” because Waymo sued him out of the Uber job and now he’s broke?

Ohh Kache like the Chinese word for truck. Got it.

majestik··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
"engineers its own downfall"

Hyperbole much? TLDR the new MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't repair as well as the old keyboard:

-- In our eyes, the new design was a repairability flop. We downgraded Apple from a seven-out-of-ten to a two. --

We're calling this a downfall now? I feel like we just got trolled.

majestik··on NSA ‘Systematically Moving’ All Its Data to the Cloud
They aren’t moving to “the Cloud” as in AWS or Azure, they’re just moving to bigger/faster/better Gov-owned data center(s). Business as usual.
majestik··on Apple Signs Deal with Volkswagen for Driverless Car
I’m not sure how this logic holds up. Airplanes are a safety issue, should their software be open sourced?
majestik··on Apple Signs Deal with Volkswagen for Driverless Car
I’m not sure what they can do to keep up with the Nomad or Treo.
