magoghm··on Kids turned low-traffic NPR Spotify comments into a secret group chat
Now we have rogue kids escaping their sandbox :)
magoghm··on China state newspaper blasts Anthropic's calls to slow AI as 'Cold War' tactic
This is what they reacted to: https://darioamodei.com/post/we-must-pace-the-frontier
magoghm··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
That's correct. As far as I know nodody builds any kind of science or technology on top of chess, but mathematics is at the base of most science and technology. It would be horrible if we prevented AI from solving mathematics problems, just because mathematicians want to solve them by themselves the "hard way".

magoghm··on Open models by OpenAI
It's not Chinese, it's Japanese.
magoghm··on How were 70s versions of games like Pong built without a programmable computer?
If you want to learn more about this, I strongly recommend reading the 1978 book "How to Design and Build Your Own Custom TV Games": https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/how-to-design-and-b...
magoghm··on Addition with flamethrowers – why game devs don't unit test
Doesn't inserting locks affect the memory hierarchy consistency mechanisms and therefore interfere with possible race conditions?
magoghm··on Addition with flamethrowers – why game devs don't unit test
Tests can't catch race conditions in multithreaded code. Now that I told you what the tests can't catch, can you imagine writing tests for that specific thing?

magoghm··on BASIC turns 60
MAI Basic Four Inc. was a relatively succesful computer manufacturer that sold business computers that used BASIC as the development language for business applications: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic/Four
magoghm··on Claude 3 beats Google Translate
I guess that what OP meant is that LLMs are not specifically trained to do translation, they learn to do it as a side effect.
magoghm··on A History of Source Control Systems: SCCS and RCS
In 1983, when I started using Unix, I went through the manuals for Unix System 7 trying to learn about every program that came with the system. So I tried SCCS, but at that time I wasn't developing software as part of a larger team so I decided it wasn't useful to me.

Many years later I bought the book "Applying RCS and SCCS: From Source Control to Project Control", half-read it and decided I still didn't feel it was something useful to me. It wasn't until 1998 or 1999 that I started using CVS, then a few years later switched to SVN, an finally to Git (between SVN and Git I spent a few years using Unity's Asset Server).

magoghm··on Draft Paper Discovered in Which Joseph Weizenbaum Envisions ELIZA's Applications
"...can't reproduce the human mind because it's obvious that is not how we work" <-- that's a very strong assumption, without any concrete evidence to support it
magoghm··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
"stole a huge quantity of copyrighted material" <- nobody stole anything, even if it's eventually determined that there was some form of copyright infringement it wouldn't have been stealing
magoghm··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
I tried to find the where I heard that Radford was inspired by that blog post, but the closest thing I found is that in the "Sentiment Neuron" paper (Learning to Generate Reviews and Discovering Sentiment: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1704.01444.pdf), in the "Discussion and Future Work" section they mention this Karpathy paper from 2015: Visualizing and Understanding Recurrent Networks https://arxiv.org/abs/1506.02078
magoghm··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
In 2015 he wrote this blog post about "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Recurrent Neural Networks": https://karpathy.github.io/2015/05/21/rnn-effectiveness/

That blog post inspired Alec Radford at Open AI to do the research that produced the "Unsupervised sentiment neuron": https://openai.com/research/unsupervised-sentiment-neuron

Open AI decided to see what happened if they scaled up that model by leveraging the new Transformer architecture invented at Google, and they created something called GPT: https://cdn.openai.com/research-covers/language-unsupervised...

magoghm··on Ask HN: AI/ML papers to catch up with current state of AI?
Another book which also seems to be very good is "Deep Learning, Foundations and Concepts". It is coming out soon and you can already preview it on-line at https://www.bishopbook.com/
magoghm··on Ask HN: AI/ML papers to catch up with current state of AI?
I think it is quite good if what you need is to get very quickly a simple overview of the current state of AI.
magoghm··on Ask HN: AI/ML papers to catch up with current state of AI?
The book that just came out, "Understanding Deep Learning", is an excellent overview of the current state of AI: https://udlbook.github.io/udlbook/

Read that first, then to keep up to date you can follow up with any papers that seem interesting to you. A good way to be aware of the interesting papers that come out is to follow @_akhaliq on X: https://twitter.com/_akhaliq

magoghm··on Harvard: Student Use Cases for AI
For the last few months Ethan Mollick has been writing some great articles about how to best use Generative AI in his blog: https://www.oneusefulthing.org/
magoghm··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
It is distribution of copyrighted material without permission of the author that is illegal, when you download you're not distributing so it isn't illegal (unless you're using something like BitTorrent that also distributes it while you're downloading it).
magoghm··on Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI and Meta for copyright infringement
I am not a lawyer, but my understanding is that copyright law typically regulates the unauthorized reproduction, distribution, public display, or creation of derivative works of copyrighted materials. Possession of copyrighted material in itself is not illegal. It's how you use that material that could potentially violate copyright laws.

magoghm··on Ask HN: Will AI result in mass silo-ing of new knowledge?
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want to share with AI. Sharing with AI makes it easier for other people to benefit from what you shared.
magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
I assume it was the result of an overzealous guardrail trying to protect personal private information. And it turns out that Bard isn't available in the EU, so I'm starting to wonder if Google included in it's training data something they shouldn't have used.
magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
That first paragraph is almost a word by word copy of this the Wikipedia entry about Edgar Allan Poe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Allan_Poe

edit: sorry if it seemed like I claimed I didn't believe you. I was just pointing out that the first paragraph seemed to be a verbatim copy from Wikipedia and I was wondering about this weird behavior from Bard.

magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
I just tried again using a different computer and I still get the answer “ I'm a text-based AI and can't assist with that.”
magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
From what I've seen, Bard often gives great answers but sometimes it can't answer even very simple questions.
magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
I don't know what chat interface you're talking about. What I posted is the answer I get when I use https://bard.google.com/
magoghm··on ChatGPT vs. Bard: A Realistic Comparison
When you ask Bard "What do you know about Edgar Allan Poe?" it answers "I'm a text-based AI and can't assist with that", some people have managed to extract information about Edgar Allan Poe from Bard but it does require some effort. With ChatGPT you just need to ask the question to get information about Edgar Allan Poe.
