madengr··on Designing an Overkill workbench for home office
I built some really nice lab benches using the laminated “butcher block” tops. One has a 48”x72” work surface to accommodate deep test equipment and still have 24” of working depth. A 24”x72” shelf on top of that for more equipment. With the butcher block you don’t need additional framing for support. Just sturdy legs at either end.

I wonder if they are using synthetic aperture radar to do this too?
madengr··on The Last Gunsmiths of the Khyber Pass
I got a shotgun for my 8th birthday, though probably started shooting at age 6. I remember the first gun I shot was an AR-15 M1 (triangular hand guard).

I bought my two kids their own .22 bolt action at 7 and 9. Then my son a .22 AR-15 at 10.

Here is my recipe. I don’t use any oil in the roux. Stock is from the shrimp heads, with file’ at the end.

madengr··on DIY Satellite Ground Station to Receive NOAA Images
Yes, all three in combination. GaAs PA, low cost GaAs LNA, and Turbo coding are what made it possible in the 90’s.

You’ll notice that many dishes are wedged shaped than circular. This is to keep the beam width under the 2 degree spacing of geostationary satellites.

The original Apple FireWire webcam was very good, with a large, motorized lens. Despite boasting higher resolution, I doubt many modern webcams are as good, especially integrated ones.
madengr··on Did fish sauce in Vietnam come from ancient Rome via the Silk Road?
I have tried Red Boat, but still prefer Three Crabs. It’s supposed to be lower quality, but I think it tastes better.
madengr··on Build an arcade machine at home
You can get unfinished cabinets of furniture grade plywood. I wanted mine to look like a nice piece of furniture (wife approved for living room), and it does, after much sanding, staining, and sealing. Extra modifications too, replacing plastic with glass and aluminum.

I don’t see how a RPi is going to work that well. I’m running a 4k monitor at over 60 Hz (freesync) with CRT emulation, and it looks gorgeous. The bezel artwork looks like it was painted.

madengr··on Chipmaker Analog Devices to acquire Maxim Integrated for $21B
Yeah, I was using a 30 dBm, L-band part that they discontinued, and had to redesign a PA section. Didn't HP acquire Avantek back in the 90's? I used to use a bunch of ATF-xxx parts.
madengr··on Google offers free fabbing for 130nm open-source chips
I thought most EDA companies put a stop to that with geographic licensing restrictions.

Not in the video I saw. She was using a lighter and spray can to do the job.

Oh BS! The guy (a drunk driver with a criminal history of child and wife abuse) turned and fired the taser at the cops.

It’s too bad George Floyd (a drug addict career criminal) wasn’t shot and killed by an armed homeowner when he committed his home invasion.

Both of these scum are eulogized by BLM (domestic terrorist organization).

madengr··on The Rolling, Lurching, Vomit-Inducing Road to a Seasickness Cure
Do you get motion sickness in VFR conditions, especially having to focus on instruments?

I’m contemplating getting a PPL, but I’m very prone to motion sickness trying to read while flying. If I’m not resting, turbulence is just fine. First-person-shooters make make me sick, but third-person do not.

madengr··on The Rolling, Lurching, Vomit-Inducing Road to a Seasickness Cure
To relieve the sickness from you or the passengers? Do you get motion sickness as a pilot, or only as a passenger?

I have been camel sick; large, slow motions.

Do the property owners have a say in this democracy?

I suppose the police chief is a white supremacist in black face, as a black female.

Assuming you can believe the SPD, the rape calls are already coming in.

I’m sure there is more to the story than “celebrating”.

Pointing a telescope at tens of meters away will get you noticed pretty quick. Now one can sell lightbulbs with noise modulation to defeat it.

I have that scope on my bench, a Tek TDS 300 series.

madengr··on The Unmarked Federal Agents Occupying Washington, D.C
I'd rather they be counterbalanced with a well-armed citizenry, such as the "cosplaying" the article insultingly describes.

Searching the FBO.gov you can find interesting solicitations, like the Department of Education needing 125 shotguns.
madengr··on First photo of HS2 tunnel boring machines
Back in the cold war, there was a proposal to criss-cross the USA with underground tunnels carrying train-launched ICBMs. Would make for a great post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie.

I doubt truck driving will obsolete, given the track record of self driving.

Federal revenue will be gutted too, it’s just that the states can’t print money.
madengr··on Things from leaked audio of Mark Zuckerberg and his employees
Cable TV is required. The KKK ran a show on a NYC public access channel back in the 90’s.

Of course I could go cut the data lines running through the right-of-way on my property. I don’t agree with how these big data companies are censoring, so maybe I will censor them.
