maddyboo··on An intro to finding things in Linux
Also = when prefixed with a space, which works basically like `command -v`, expanding to the full path of the executable. For example `echo =grep` results in `/usr/bin/grep`.
maddyboo··on .plan
On plan.cat/stdin it shows just such an incantation:

    T=`mktemp` && curl -so $T https://plan.cat/~YOUR_USERNAME && $EDITOR $T && \
      curl -su YOUR_USERNAME -F "plan=<$T" https://plan.cat/stdin
It worked for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
maddyboo··on Cellular Automata in F#
I don't know F#, but from what I gather it's very similar to OCaml which I do. To put it bluntly, after OCaml, most other languages feel ugly. OCaml is my idea of what programming should be: graceful, ordered, well-designed, mathematical, yet practically applicable to real-world problems.
maddyboo··on Why Tokyo Works
Except for the "everything is just so great" part.
maddyboo··on Photoshop’s journey to the web
This isn’t what I meant when I asked you for Linux support, Adobe!
maddyboo··on Self studying the MIT applied math curriculum (2019)
Excellent intro comic, it got me really excited about your product! I would love to try it out once you release a more advanced course. I signed up, hopefully you will send e-mail updates as you release new courses.

maddyboo··on Show HN: I built a sonar into my surfboard
Super cool!

P.s. it seems the repo with the code is private.

maddyboo··on A New Search Engine That Doesn’t Rank Sites Based on Their Authority
Oops

maddyboo··on Obsidian – A knowledge base from a local folder of plain text Markdown files
Obsidian may be Electron, but it doesn’t feel like it to me. It’s fast, smooth, and I’ve never noticed excessive memory usage. I think its quality exceeds most fully native apps, especially on Linux.

Last I heard it was built entirely by two people (and two cats). What’s a better way to build a high quality native-ish application targeting 5 platforms with a team of 2?

maddyboo··on Pursue High-Quality Leisure
> chill and relax

> don’t need thinking

You seem to be seeking proxies for the effect of not thinking, putting your mind and body at ease, and letting go. Have you given meditation a try? Anecdotally, it can fulfill these needs in a way no other semi-conscious activity seems capable.

maddyboo··on Showing GUIs from Shell Scripts
I like yad[0] for this. For example, I use it to present a GUI color picker to change/insert colors in Vim (via a plugin called vCoolor[1]). I also use it in some i3/sway scripts that need user input or to show a progress bar.

maddyboo··on Use Raspberry Pi as Airplay server to screen mirror on TVs, monitors, projectors
Does anyone know of any similar magic for turning an RPi into a Chromecast?
maddyboo··on The Mind Has No Firewall (1998) [pdf]
Down the Wikipedia Rabbit Hole we go:

> During the initial run of [A Fish Called Wanda], a Danish audiologist named Ole Bentzen died while laughing during a screening, which led newspapers to report that he had died from laughter. The official cause of death was heart fibrillation, which may have been caused by an increased heart rate due to extended laughter. Cleese considered using the event for publicity, but ultimately decided it was in too bad taste.

maddyboo··on Pocket P.C. – Ships first dev units
Reminds me of the ClockworkPi[0]. Is there a name for this form factor?

maddyboo··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
It’s the “wrong element” but if the goal is to scroll to a given vertical position then it works.
maddyboo··on Google sets burial date for legacy Chrome Extensions, fears for ad-blockers grow
I mostly agree, but one really nice feature FF has is the ability to see a diff of the CSS properties you've changed in the inspector:

maddyboo··on Nginx Playground
Absolutely. Julia is amazing. All of her work on Wizard Zines is so positive, helpful, approachable, and yet has enough depth that everyone from beginners to experts can learn something. She is an Internet Treasure for sure.
maddyboo··on Slacktyping: I'm typing when you're typing (2018)
That’s not stupid, that’s really cool!
maddyboo··on Confessions of a Michelin Star Inspector
Most things in Japan seem to come with less pretense.
maddyboo··on Show HN: I built four eight-foot-long handwriting robots
See also the LongPen, conceived by author Margaret Atwood for remote book signings. I particularly like the name because it sounds like something out of her fiction.

maddyboo··on Bestline: Light self-contained readline alternative
It would be cool to see a version of rlwrap [1] (blwrap in this case?) using this library.

maddyboo··on The pitfalls of using SSH-agent, or how to use an agent safely
I like to use GPG-agent’s SSH agent emulation [1]. I start the agent with a systemd user service and have the keys expire after something like 10 minutes. A benefit is that it uses a GUI pinentry dialog to ask for your password if the requesting program doesn’t have stdin from a terminal, e.g. if I try to git push from Fugitive inside vim. I find that GPG-agent is more intuitive and less finicky than SSH-agent.

maddyboo··on A search engine that favors text-heavy sites and punishes modern web design
Seconded, I’d like to incorporate it into a project of mine.

maddyboo··on Show HN: Chat with your contacts on different platforms without an app
This looks cool! I would be concerned about the privacy of my communications, though, since your service is essentially a MITM. What have you done to address privacy concerns? Your privacy police seems like boilerplate and doesn’t address anything specific to your service.
maddyboo··on Raspberry Pi Nixie Atomic Clock
Dalibor has a YouTube channel where he publishes super interesting videos about the production and R&D processes. Highly recommend.

maddyboo··on Migrating from Docker to Podman
I wrote a little tool to make creating and interacting with systemd-nspawn containers easier (on Arch Linux only right now):

https://github.com/b0o/arch-lwc

Not intended for any sort of production. I personally use it to run Firefox inside a container and for testing.

maddyboo··on Adapting the OCaml Ecosystem for Multicore OCaml
Also interesting: the new OCaml website is built with ReScript, the rebranding of ReasonML.
maddyboo··on I'm a Coffee Roaster: Here's What You're Doing Wrong That's Ruining Your Coffee
It’s an enjoyable part of the day and a fun skill to practice.

Snobbery exists, but I think most people are just excited about the subject and perhaps overly eager to share their learnings. To some it seems snobbish, but from the coffee lover’s point of view each thing they’ve learned has made a big difference in their experience and they’d like to share that with others.

Just like any skill, there will be gatekeepers and elitists who think they are better than others. They’re the vocal minority.
