mad182··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
Exactly.

I don't think its only the google search algorithm to blame, this has a lot to do with the extinction of old school forums and blogs. These days large part of the real discussions and posts without financial motivation have moved to facebook, whatsapp groups, discord, slack and other places behind logins and paywalls which google can't index. What's left in public are mostly blogs and websites motivated by affiliate or ad revenue and SEO'ed to death. So there simply is much higher garbage to valuable content ratio in the public, indexable web.

mad182··on Web3 is centralized
Moving money upwards in the pyramid.
mad182··on Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
File system is a database. Spreadsheet is a database. And surely blockchain is also a database.
mad182··on Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
Since the ICO craze in 2017 I've seen countless ideas and millions spent trying to use blockchain and crypto for everything you could possibly imagine, and yet I don't see anything meaningful has ever came out of it, apart from get rich quick schemes, ponzis and some virtual novelty items.

Bitcoin has been around for 12 years, but in real life I don't know anyone who has ever used something crypto related for anything else than risky investment, or basically gambling. I'm very skeptical.

mad182··on Instagram Is Facebook Now
Same. I prefer Telegram, and a few of my closest friends also use it, so I use it the most, but even my contact list on WhatsApp is at least 5x longer.
mad182··on Ask HN: Why is the touchpad on MacBooks still ahead of other manufacturers?
I'm curious, in what way do you consider Macbook touchpad so much better? I have a Macbook pro, a dell, a Thinkpad, and I honestly can't tell which one I like better, they all work perfectly fine.
mad182··on Chrome does not respect autocomplete=off (2018)
As a user, I think Chrome ignoring autocomplete=off is great and if it was a flag, I would enable it without hesitation. This feature is misused all the time.
mad182··on Datalegreya Font
Yep. I block remote fonts by default and for a moment it all seemed very weird.
mad182··on I no longer trust The Great Suspender
Packages in the default repos for some large Linux distro are usually reviewed and tested by many people until they make it into updates for current stable version, so while it's probably not entirely impossible for some malicious code to get in, it seems pretty unlikely. Unlike browser extensions, where the current owner can upload anything they want and it's pushed to the users without them even knowing.
mad182··on New MacBook Pro models to feature magsafe, no touch bar and more ports: analyst
> Type C is pretty ubiquitous by now.

Not really. From top of my head I could easily gather > 30 things at my house with the plain old USB A connector (several flash drives, keyboards, mouses, Bluetooth and WiFi adapters, smart card reader, external hdd enclosures, a stack of old laptops, r-pi, headphones, routers, playstation, tv, car diagnostics cables and probably several other things I can't remember). There are USB A connectors in all 3 cars in my family. And probably a dozen more devices with mini/micro USB - dslr camera, couple of tablets and older phones, dashcams, thermal imaging camera, powerbank...

Meanwhile there are exactly 3 devices with usb-c ports - 2 phones and one of several laptops (which also has several usb a ports). The only regular use of USB C for me is charging my phone. Everything else is on USB A or micro USB.

mad182··on You might not need jQuery (2014)
The size argument against jquery has always dumbfounded me. Bundle sizes in megabytes, "node-modules" folders with thousands of files and hundreds of megabytes are fine for modern web apps, but if you dare to mention jquery, you can bet someone will cry about overhead and waste.
mad182··on Ask HN: What Linux Desktop Environment do you use on tablets?
Not the OP, but to me a tablet is probably the worst tech purchase I ever made. I have 2 at home (mine and wife's), but we almost never use them.

To me the tablet combines the worst properties from phone and laptop. A smartphone is great because it's always with me no matter where I go. A laptop is ergonomic, powerful and easy to use. The tablet is neither of these things. When I'm at home I always prefer to use the laptop, when I'm out I don't see a reason to lug around another device that's almost the same as a phone, just a bit bigger.

mad182··on Your single-page app is now a polyfill
What does it even mean?
mad182··on The companies that bring us knife steel
Not really. The technique is well known and pretty simple. If there are differences between old and modern Damacus steel, it's mostly down to impurities in materials, but you can get all kinds of different results depending on material and technique. Some are vary similar to the original.

Damascus steel, old or new, is kind of shitty for practical purposes when compared to ordinary, good quality tool steel we have now, so it's all about the looks anyway.

mad182··on The default branch for newly-created repositories is now main
I personally don't care how it's named, but it seems silly to change a commonly used word because one of its multiple meanings in a completely different context is associated with something bad.

If we are going this route, just in case we should also remove the word "default", because it means failure to repay a debt, to avoid upsetting somebody in a tough economic situation.

mad182··on Google’s Search Preference Menu Eliminates DuckDuckGo
I'm from the EU and this is pretty much how I feel.

Also I kind of trust huge companies like Google more than smaller ones. Yes, I know Google is collection lots of info on me, and I know they will show me ads and try to sell me something or get me to use more of their services, but I don't feel like it's such a big issue, and I don't think it's in their self interest to abuse this data or that anyone there cares about me personally. What is some smaller company going to do with my data and who are they going to sell it to? Who knows. Can I really trust they are not collecting any data? Who knows.

mad182··on Google’s Search Preference Menu Eliminates DuckDuckGo
This is my experience as well. If DDG gave me the same quality of results as Google, I might use it. Until then, I don't care. Privacy alone isn't going to cut it, if I only cared about privacy and not the results, I would send my queries to /dev/null instead.
mad182··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
Hats off, Chrome starts instantly on my Debian machines. Even on a 10 years old, half dead Thinkpad it's just couple of seconds. This must be a Ubuntu/Snap specific issue.
mad182··on Expert predicts a major hurricane hitting Houston would be “America’s Chernobyl”
Not really. In hindsight, many of the efforts like digging under the reactor and dropping lead from air were of questionable usefulness at best. In their defense, they acted according to the information and resources they had, but all in all the mitigation efforts gave unnecessary radiation exposure to many people and many of them were completely useless. If the reactor were left alone for a while, it wouldn't have changed much.
mad182··on Blockchain, the Solution for Almost Nothing
Wrong. They are using blockchain to generate hype. Internally it might as well be an Excel spreadsheet instead of blockchain and it wouldn't make a difference to the end user.
mad182··on Canon's cloud platform has lost users' files and can't restore them
There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer.
mad182··on Boeing 747s receive software updates over floppy disks
> we keep a bunch of old laptops running win 7 and other examples around, hound around for them and spare parts

Maybe I misunderstood something, but do you really need some specific, old hardware to run win 7? I thought you are going to say DOS or something older than win 98.

mad182··on The most remarkable legacy system I have seen
Power cuts every month doesn't seem very normal to me. I had a home server running for a few years without UPS, and at one point it had over 2 years of uptime.
mad182··on Soup.io Will Be Discontinued
AWS is cheap to start with, but once you got some scale, the numbers starts racking up quickly. It's a really bad idea to use AWS for a project with lots of users and low earnings per user. Of course, for some kind of eCommerce project with millions in turnover the server costs doesn't matter, but for a small company or individual project hosting choice can be the difference between making a decent living or burning money.
mad182··on Why are toys such a bad business?
It doesn't really help. I have purchased very few toys for my kids myself, but they have way more than enough, we even have couple of huge garbage bags full of toys hidden away in the attic, and we gave some away, otherwise our house started to look like we are hoarding them.

We have many relatives and friends, everyone wants to gift something at every occasion (x2 kids), and several times friends gave us whole bags of toys their kids outgrew. Over time they pile up more than you may think.

And in the end - it doesn't matter how many toys they got - a measuring tape or an empty box will keep them occupied longer than any toy you can imagine :D

mad182··on Dates and Times in JavaScript – A New API for Dates from TC39
You forgot there will be a leap second and switch to summer time.
mad182··on VCs Promised to Help Black Founders – My Experience Shows a Different Reality
But this is relevant. If both the product and her CV are weak, the racism card doesn't hold up. If I was deciding if I want to invest money in some app, I'm pretty sure seeing most of the reviews are poor quality fakes would be a lot more important factor than founders race.
mad182··on VCs Promised to Help Black Founders – My Experience Shows a Different Reality
Of course they should. Investors have every right to choose where to invest however they want, it's their money and nobody is entitled to it.
mad182··on Linux Mint drops Ubuntu Snap packages
Same. I'm running Linux as my primary desktop and server operating system for ~16 years, and I don't really care if it's becoming more mainstream on desktops anymore. It's already working perfectly fine for my needs, so I don't even want it to change much.
mad182··on Nginx UI – Access and modify the Nginx configurations files without CLI
Why not?

I have done this for 10+ years and it's still working flawlessly, I don't see a reason to add more complexity to something that is working fine for my needs. I don't have to change config often, maybe once a year or so.
