machinehermiter··on Ad men sacked to improve gender pay gap win sex discrimination claim
I would imagine statistically that having conversations about people's lives all day is more appealing to women than men in the ideal for the job.

Once you are on the job though you quickly realize what a terrible job it is and after a time leverage it into something else.

Black women in the US are what about 7% of the population?

So most likely any random HR interview is with a younger white woman.

machinehermiter··on Tell HN: YouTube is asking for age verification to watch Bret Weinstein's video
I mean clearly youtube has poor control if a group of some sorts does an attack on a specific user to lower views.

With that said I just watched Timothy Nguyen's video about Eric Weinstein this weekend and it just confirmed everything I suspected about Eric. I didn't realize he even put in his paper he is not a physicist but an "entertainer".

I think Eric gained traction and brought Brett in on this. They are doing a new form of science fiction IMO. It doesn't really work though if they break character.

The occam's razor between two brothers who have had revolutionary ideas in physics, economics and biology all shelved by an establishment vs two brothers who are podcasters creating content is pretty straight forward.

I am not sure restricting the age like a rated R movie is the worst thing with what they are doing.

machinehermiter··on Don't Be Anti Car. Be Pro Something Else.
anti-car? people need to quit social media. It is rotting your brain.
machinehermiter··on Americans' life ratings reach record high
My personal life is wonderful.

The country?

This chart from the Fed is just astounding. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/FYFSD

machinehermiter··on I was sick, tired and had lost myself until I began lifting weights at 71
I have lifted for 35+ years now. The only thing I don't like is how popular powerlifting has become.

Everyone I know that has been into powerlifting for a long time including myself is paying the price with disc herniation, bad knees, etc.

We really need gyms to get belt squat machines or pit sharks so people stop balancing barbells on their spine with huge weights and move up and down. Kind of obvious what is going to happen over time.

Lifting heavier weights than you have previously is super addictive.

I don't think it really helps my mood nearly as much as hard conditioning or even long walks but I don't really know what it is like to not lift at this point.

machinehermiter··on To H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks with Facebook
Spot on.

I stopped using social media because I was sick of having this critic in my brain constantly judging if an experience is worth posting on social media.

Of course this is a huge trade off with not knowing what my elderly neighbor at a cottage I never go to had for lunch.

machinehermiter··on How to install Linux instead of Windows 11
People still think it is 15 years ago that it took a week of tinkering to figure out how to get sound from your sound card.

I just don't care enough to become a linux missionary/priest though and try to get people to switch. I can't make the horse drink the water.

machinehermiter··on How to install Linux instead of Windows 11
I have no idea what you are installing or if you are talking about the year 2005.

KDE Neon in 2021 on SSD takes me about 15 min to reinstall completely with no configuration.Everything just works. It is easier than Windows.

I barely even know any unix commands beyond ls after using some form of KDE plasma for around 4 years now. Everything has just worked for a long time now.

machinehermiter··on Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed
This is like people reading research in the 50s that smoking causes lung cancer. Even if true what are we going to do? Everybody smokes so lets just keep smoking instead of trying to quit.
machinehermiter··on New algorithm flies drones faster than human racing pilots
Yea I think this is a bit harsh. I don't think it is quite such a trivial task to figure out when a FPV drone has such degrees of freedom. It can basically change to any direction at any time. Then the known space is the air in the room. The humans are also training on a known course.

A legit drone racing pilot is incredible at this also so it is not like there is a ton of meat on the bone to pick at.

It is cool from the perspective of racing drones even if less impressive from the perspective of AGI or something.

machinehermiter··on Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from Covid-19
There are no options obviously.

I am fully vaccinated, if you offer me a booster I will take it. If you offer me whatever, I will take it.

At that point I have done all I can do. If someone wants to stay in a bunker because things are beyond their risk preference then they should not be forced out of the bunker.

Forcing me back in a bunker though being fully vaccinated is absolute bullshit if anyone can get vaccinated.

machinehermiter··on Huawei hiring former Democratic super lobbyist Tony Podesta
Honestly, Hunter Biden's art is quite good.

I think that attack is foolish really. There are all kinds of crazy prices being paid for collectables right now.

machinehermiter··on Coronavirus Skeptics Use Orthodox Data Practices to Promote Unorthodox Science
I mean I am fully vaccinated and ready for a booster even if offered but these attacks on skepticism are crazy.

Are we looking to go back to medieval times that skepticism is not tolerated and have some digital version of the Pope that acts as the fact checker on reality?

The language in the headline sounds straight from religion.

machinehermiter··on Sci-Hub Twitter account suspended
As someone who hasn't used social media in 5+ years, what do these social networks need to do to make you quit using them?

There has to be some threshold but I just don't understand how this threshold hasn't been crossed for more people.

I don't want to see Twitter legislated or controlled. The counter balance and equilibrium should be doing crazy things causes a massive loss of users so crazy things do not happen. Twitter is not a public utility like electricity or drinking water. You actually need to drink water.

machinehermiter··on Can we survive technology? (1955) [pdf]
He also thought we would soon be able to completely control the weather.

To me, his thoughts on the weather are some of his most interesting things to read just from the fact even someone with the brain power of Von Neuman could be utterly and completely wrong.

It is the ultimate lesson in the fallibility of what you believe to be true.

machinehermiter··on Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will turn into a ‘metaverse’
The killer app of VR has always been virtual sex. We have made no progress towards this.

You can't do reality with just sight and sound. I suspect a 100 years from now people will look at us talking about the metaverse and virtual reality with any kind of headset as ridiculous as the old videos of people flapping wings attempting to fly. It just doesn't work.

machinehermiter··on We’re all teenagers now: The adolescent mindset transformed the US and the world
I am just not sure people are more educated at this point. For sure not kids graduating high school this year.

We have the technology that anyone can take classes at the best schools ever created by humans for free but the average person wants to watch a guy eat a 100 hotdogs for time or a video of someone else reacting to the hot dog video.

machinehermiter··on How to gain more from your reading
I think this is exactly the spot audio books come in.

When I am driving in the car, cutting the lawn, walking for exercise..I am "reading". I make time to walk 50 min a day without exception and you just rip through books if reading 50 min everyday.

machinehermiter··on Disinformation: It’s History
Yuval Noah Harari had a great quote on the history of misinformation in his talk with Natalie Portman that all religious people in history think all religions are fake news besides for one.
machinehermiter··on It doesn't take much public creativity to stand out as a job candidate
My job opportunities are limited to what my real connections and friends can help me get.

If I want to expand my opportunities I have to add nodes and strong ties in my network.

Not gimmicks for the interview lottery and pray the hiring manager doesn't have a friend going for the job.

From my past positions I suspect people highly underestimate how many times they go on an interview with no real chance for the position because the hiring manager already has someone in their real network in mind. I mean a real friend or friend of a friend, not someone they just added on social media but don't really know.

machinehermiter··on Quantum computing hype is bad for science
From talks I have watched, China is dumping money into quantum computing because Jian-Wei Pan and his team are genius.

I don't think China has the same problems we do that people are worried about "hype" and all this nonsense.

Jian-Wei Pan said they want to use their photon QC device and boson sampling to solve graph theory problems.

I don't understand boson sampling enough to know if it makes sense for graph theory but obviously they have some ideas in mind. Quantum graph theory, quantum network science ideas I suppose.

The video I watched also has 600 views and the only comment is if you can use a photon quantum device to mine bitcoin.

That is a cultural problem we have, not a problem with science that humans have.

machinehermiter··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
I just don't understand why people are so terrified of opinions they don't agree with.

I am just so glad I am old enough to have been exposed to a wide variety of different opinions and ideas before this crack down on such.

Being exposed to bullshit ultimately hones your bullshit detector.

If you grow up on twitter it just seems to me you will be easy to fool. Like a person who lives in a bubble afraid of germs so their immune system is nothing.

machinehermiter··on Twitter tests Reddit-style upvote and downvote buttons
Exactly. This is a terrible idea. This is exactly the opposite of what we need as a society.
machinehermiter··on Social Media Is a Public Health Crisis
I quit smoking cigarettes 10 years ago and social media 5 years ago.

Once you are addicted you forget how good life is without. You don't notice how much of your behavior has changed to accommodate your addiction until you quit.

I have no doubt people in the future will look at this time as the equivalent of the insanity of my grandfather becoming a cigarette smoker at 13 in the 1930s. "He is just mature for his age, what is the big deal?"

machinehermiter··on Time to assume that health research is fraudulent until proven otherwise?
I take issue with the entire concept that "normal" people can "follow the science".

Most scientific fields I know I can't follow because I don't have enough background. I love reading papers in the fields I have a base understanding to be able to get something out of. The idea the average person can follow all scientific fields with no background just doesn't make sense.

When I read language that says "follow the science" or "based on science" it is almost always using science as a rhetorical device and should not be trusted, period.

This is actually closer to medieval magic than science. The incantation "based on science" makes every piece bullshit "true".

machinehermiter··on Visualizing all the vacant office space in San Francisco
WeWork reminds me of listening/watching Real player audio and video podcasts in 1997 on psuedo.com .

It was basically a podcast channel for hip 90s NYC culture.

They got the idea totally right but the timing totally wrong. Psuedo filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

machinehermiter··on Ask HN: Programming Audio Book Recommendations
I second Designing Data-Intensive Applications.

Deep Learning with Python by François Chollet I think works as an audiobook as well.

I am a big non-fiction audio book fan and so much depends on the voice actor. I bad read can ruin the best content while Robertson Dean made Alan Greenspan's The Age of Turbulence into an enthralling adventure story.

machinehermiter··on Assange case: Key witness admits he lied
I mean I went to MSNBC on Saturday and the front page had like 5 stories about Trump.

Julian Assange just isn't going to drive enough clicks.

There is no conspiracy here, this is a side effect of the internet destroying the media's business model.

Julian Assange would have been a really interesting Sunday morning discussion in the 90s. The media can't really afford interesting discussion at this point though.

machinehermiter··on Piped: A privacy-friendly YouTube front end which is efficient by design
Awesome.

If someone wants to post a version with just the search bar and nothing trending that would be even better.

I would literally use that everyday and never go to youtube.com

I am just tired having to see moronic content and a start page of 20 random stupid faces for extra clicks.

Bookmarked the live version and will use this as is.

I just think it needs a result count for the search. I think that is a useful feature.

I love the grid of 6 videos across in the search. Can really sift through things much better.

machinehermiter··on Cloth face masks are 'comfort blankets' that do little to curb Covid spread
I don't think we should underestimate the value of comfort blankets though in this situation either.

I had no problem wearing a mask but I did have a problem with what seemed like a Pascal's Wager argument that was not just being passed off as science but as unquestionable religious dogma.

I don't think you can underestimate either the cover and scapegoat masks gave politicians in this situation. "My plan would work but it is these people not wearing masks that are causing my plan to fail!".

While I hope we really do solve what the actual effect of mask wearing was on this it does seem like a very hard experiment to run. So many different environments and levels of use, then noise in the masks themselves, on and on with variables to control for.
