m_myers··on Tokyo Radiation Less Than Paris’s Three Years After Meltdown
I downvoted because the GP doesn't even bother to make a coherent point, let alone back it up. This isn't Facebook.
m_myers··on The Face Behind Bitcoin?
> You have reached the limit of 5 free articles a month.

I haven't read any Newsweek articles this month. And it appears I'm not going to, either.

m_myers··on Dataset: Ten Years of NFL Plays Analyzed, Visualized, Quizzified
The question specifies "early in the game"; the correct call can and will vary in a late game or late first half situation (and of course depends on the strengths and weaknesses of the teams involved).

As Bill Barnwell of Grantland is fond of saying, in the first half, your only goal is to maximize your expected points. You don't know exactly how many points you're going to need in the game until the end.

m_myers··on Breaking Madden: The Super Bowl, in which the machine bleeds to death
Sure, on any modern platform. But you don't change 25-year-old code unless there's a pressing reason.
m_myers··on Have I tattooed a syntax error on my arm?
The notice is playing the odds; it doesn't track referrers, and right now most of the traffic is actually coming from Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/1vs4uu/have... to be precise). You might be surprised how many people with several thousand rep points forget the rules when they've been on Reddit recently.
m_myers··on Have I tattooed a syntax error on my arm?
It recursively calls both itself and another copy of itself. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/991142/how-does-this-bash...
m_myers··on The architecture of Stack Overflow [video]
To be clear: there is no version of the actual Stack Overflow code that is publicly available. There are, however, numerous open-source reimplementations of portions of the site code.

Also (as the video perhaps mentioned), the Stack Overflow developers have often been able to spin off pieces of the code as open-source libraries. See http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2012/02/stack-exchange-open-so...

m_myers··on What is your best programmer joke?
Well put. There is actually a major difference between a joke thread here and a joke thread on Stack Overflow: on HN, it would be on the front page for a few hours or perhaps a day at most (less if the volume of comments triggered the anti-flamewar code). But on Stack Overflow, the joke thread was being bumped to the front page every day for months; any edit or new answer jumps it to the top again, even if that answer is a copy of six other answers.
m_myers··on What is your best programmer joke?
There's another whole thread devoted to cartoons: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/84556/whats-your-favorite...

Yes, it's locked too, and it too was deleted for a year or so before the current crop of moderators undeleted and locked it.

m_myers··on What is your best programmer joke?
Huh. I was pretty sure this was one question everyone could understand was off-topic, but I guess I was wrong.

Interestingly, this HN submission is illustrating the original reason Jeff Atwood locked the post in 2009 - nobody can be bothered to even read the first page before posting their own joke.

m_myers··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
That would be http://slant.co.

Disclosure: I am not affiliated with slant.co, but I am a Stack Overflow moderator. I like slant.co a lot.

m_myers··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
http://slant.co is pretty much that.
m_myers··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
There is a time and a place for everything. For opinion-based questions about programming, that place is http://www.slant.co/ (not affiliated with Stack Exchange).
m_myers··on Jury: Newegg infringes Spangenberg patent, must pay $2.3 million
Someone who was paid to move to a town so they could be on a jury could never get onto a jury.
m_myers··on Launching developer Q&A on Stack Overflow
Examples? I find myself on SO quite often through searches and can only remember one or maybe two questions that were closed.
m_myers··on Launching developer Q&A on Stack Overflow
Or maybe the "questions police" is the reason the community is there and not in yet another weed-infested forum.

Disclosure: Card-carrying member of the "questions police".

No, no, football causes poverty. And obesity causes football.
m_myers··on The Monster Truck Madness 2 website has been taken down
Because it doesn't actually affect the site and it gets around HN's duplicate detector.
m_myers··on 6TB helium-filled hard drives bump capacity, decrease power use
This seems like a Simon-Ehrlich wager case. We don't know of an immediate way to stop the crisis, but does that mean we really will run out of helium before someone discovers a better method of production?

I am not an economist and I'm not going to bet $10k on it or anything, but I think it's reasonable to expect something to change the situation.

m_myers··on You’re infected—if you want to see your data again, pay us $300 in Bitcoins
Or for PowerShell:

dir -Path "$env:userprofile\AppData" -Filter *.exe -Recurse > "$env:userprofile\Desktop\FoundFiles.txt"
Useful if your corporate security policy, like mine, has disabled the command prompt but left PowerShell intact.
m_myers··on f.lux has been updated to a new version
I've noticed that I can't make it to 4 AM anymore, but I'd just attributed it to getting older. Perhaps it is f.lux's doing after all.

m_myers··on How Two Newspaper Reporters Helped Free an Innocent Man
Reminds me of the classic James Stewart film Call Northside 777 [1], about two Chicago men falsely imprisoned for a murder during Prohibition. The real-life case it was based on ([2]) hinged on a witness identification that occurred a day after the same witness had not recognized the suspect just after arrest; the police then recorded the suspect has having been arrested the second day and omitted the failure from the record.

Both men stayed in prison until a newspaper reporter discovered the case, just as in this article; in fact, one of the men was not released until several years after the movie was made.

m_myers··on Founders' Accents
Conversely, I skimmed down the page, saw the list of references at the bottom, and knew it had to be a tokenadult comment.
m_myers··on Happy 20th birthday Debian
I downloaded all 7 CDs for Woody, but didn't actually know how to burn a CD from an ISO, so I ended up with 7 coasters. I figured out my mistake and tried again the next week, but this time I picked a distro that only needed one CD: Ubuntu (Hoary). Never managed to get back to straight Debian since then.
m_myers··on Why does this Java program terminate despite appearing that it shouldn't?
That happens because of the "old shoe or glass bottle?" question.[1] When newbies (or even oldbies) ask how to do something, often the real question could be solved much better by taking a completely different tack. This has also been called the "XY problem".[2]

The best answers would ideally answer the question as asked (or explain why it can't be done) and also show a still more excellent way.

m_myers··on Dear Mr. Watterson
Calvin & Hobbes and Pogo are two of my favorites also. But for sheer volume of jokes and puns packed into each strip, it's hard to top Get Fuzzy. Its basic premise is similar to Garfield (man living with cat and dog, both of whom can talk), but it's written by a cartoonist who hasn't been coming up with the same jokes for 30 years straight.
m_myers··on Not Constructive, a place for the discussions not allowed on Stack Overflow
Programmers.SE originally took "not constructive" questions, but that turned out to be a mess, so they had to refine their scope multiple times until a viable model appeared. Now their scope is more or less "whiteboard" questions, which can be partially opinion based (just like almost every question on SO), but that is not the focus. The FAQ says:

    > Specific issues with software development, for instance:
      - algorithm and data structure concepts
      - testing and quality assurance
      - development methodologies
    > freelancing and business concerns
    > software architecture, engineering, or licensing
m_myers··on Reddit co-founder on NSA snooping [video]
In multiparty systems, it is possible to have a single-issue party which is actually electable (see the Pirate Party in Sweden and Germany). But in the US, any party must have a completely defined platform which is acceptable to a majority - or at least a plurality - of voters.

That is why the Libertarian and Green parties, both of which receive quite a few votes, are never elected. And that is why the proposed new party has very little chance. If its platform is defined by San Francisco hackers, there's a good chance that I will agree with half of the platform and strongly disagree with the other half, and most of the country will have the same reaction.
