mSparks··on How to Make a Handheld EMP Jammer
and what i mean by that, is we are talking about a pulse of high voltage and very very high frequency (maybe even gamma radiation) and its effect on electronics.

thats not a case of power falloff. Because interaction with the environment and target is non linear.

for example if it blasts a phone to reset from a few centimeters it could easily drop all calls in a 20 meter radius. but upping the power/voltage 4 times may only add milimeters to the range of blasting the phone to reset because so much is absorbed by the case. but upping the power/voltage 5 times could add a meter to blasting the phone to reset because the case now no longer absorbs enough energy to prevent the interference. Also resonance and harmonics play a huge role in the effect.

All conjecture. but my point is you cant apply school boy physics to the problem because its not a problem they teach in school.

mSparks··on How to Make a Handheld EMP Jammer
aiui.

its not linear.

either it induces a voltage high enough to cause disruption or it doesnt.

the limiting factor is the voltage not the power (power is tiny)

mSparks··on Russian ship loitering near undersea cables
given this is "Russia sub ship loitering near Syrian undersea cables."

its probably fud aimed at the strong russian syrian government relationship.

mSparks··on New trusted root certificates added to Windows in unannounced update
we dont disagree. Pointing out the change in behaviour is just another reason the perfect security mindset leads to worse security.
mSparks··on New trusted root certificates added to Windows in unannounced update
The ability to issue a malicious certificate gives you the ability to instantly mim any https connection.

So about as bad as it gets. Worse, because the user is under the impression there is at least some security on the connection which changes their behavior. - for example most users would now not enter financial details on a non https connection.

Does anyone know if there is a log stored in windows 10 of what root authorities were used by different domains?

mSparks··on London police charge man with terrorism over use of encryption
Pretty sure Theresa May can be arrested under exactly the same charges.

That's the thing with these people. Its not just idiocy, it's malicious intent. They really do think Orwells 1984 was a handbook not a warning.

mSparks··on Why an unhackable mobile phone is a complete marketing myth
Thats not a modem, it suffers the same problem (mic connected to the - compromised - baseband processor). To hook a mic to the Pi you need an ADC to the GPIO or something like: https://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/r...
mSparks··on Why an unhackable mobile phone is a complete marketing myth
Pi3 + screen + 20ah lipo + mic + speaker + usb 4g modem (removable)

and linfone or equivelent.

Just need a 3d printer so i can print the case. A bit of a brick. but a quite the "swiss army knife" of comms.

I also dont know how many people are aware just how sensitive the mic is on modern phones. I wrote a little app that turns android phones into bugs (broadcasts sound from the mic over wifi) a few years ago. It can pick up a whisper from 40m away, while when using it as a phone there is never any background noise.

mSparks··on Why an unhackable mobile phone is a complete marketing myth
Who now have nothing better to do than down vote comments like this. Like anyone important doesn't already have access to one of the thousands of black market stingray type devices that came out a couple of years ago.

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-black-market-dealers-se...

mSparks··on Why an unhackable mobile phone is a complete marketing myth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stingray_phone_tracker

They basically give external control to all the baseband processors functions (read mic, control signal, read gps chip etc.)

It's why snowden made: https://www.wired.com/2016/07/snowden-designs-device-warn-ip...

because if your phone is in airplane mode, it shouldn't be transmitting - and they can all be made to.

(Oh, and I have friends who served in Afghanistan, so found out about all this around 2002)

mSparks··on Why an unhackable mobile phone is a complete marketing myth
->There's a LOT that the phone OS and hardware manufacturers can do at the hardware and firmware level to make things better.

Yeah, like not issuing phones with intentionally compromised baseband processors.

In fact, any phone that has a direct connection from the mic to the baseband processor is not just "hackable" - it's designed to hack your life (hint:all of them).

mSparks··on Another replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has caught fire
i wonder if thats why my screen has cracked... (S7 edge)

very strange crack pattern. (barely visible marble pattern) Im fairly certain it happened while i was using it on a hot day and it got to hot to hold. But not certain. Want to swap it for a blackberry priv anyway but not got around to it.

mSparks··on UK bulk surveillance review is ‘fiction’, claims former NSA technical director
->“So this bill and study are to review and then authorise something that they have been doing for 15 years and, yes, we are joining the Russians and Chinese in monitoring our populations.”

15 years is only 2001. Bulk surveillance started in 1998.

The only reason they stick to "bulk meta data" is everything else is to much data to store. As soon as they pick up something interesting (illegal or not) it definitely doesn't stop there.

On the plus side. At least the development community can now start taking communications security seriously. Rather than sticking their head in the sand and pretending https: is the be all and end all to that particular problem. Or just not caring at all.

mSparks··on Police complaints drop over 90% after deploying body cameras
Having been arrested for intervening in the UK when a police officer was being totally unnecessarily violent to a young lad about 15 years old.

And then filing a complaint to be told I was never arrested.

All I can say is. Not soon enough.

I'd say the main reason for the change in behaviour is it stops the lying scumbags lying.

Hopefully they don't have direct access to the footage so can't doctor it themselves.

mSparks··on Tor Users Might Soon Have a Way to Avoid Those Annoying CAPTCHAs
yes, but my point was I think its a "bad" design.

It is not part of the internet, if servers want to provide "anonymous" access they can provide a tor address. But if they don't, then accessing a standard webserver via tor is very little different than any of the other means of illegitimately accessing computers.

->web access via tor seems like a lot of effort to provide what is little more than providing "hacking" services against normal webservers.

I would much rather see for example: https://thepiratebay.se.onion

where tor contacts the dns for thepiratebay.se to get the underlying onion address to use.

much better all round than either going through an exit node (most of which are malicious) to thepiratebay.se or trying to remember uj3wazyk5u4hnvtk.onion or whatever it has changed to now.

mSparks··on Tor Users Might Soon Have a Way to Avoid Those Annoying CAPTCHAs
While obviously useful for the poor souls that live in backwards dictatorships/monarchies like north korea and the uk. i dont personally think tor exit nodes are that great an idea.

tor traffic should stay on the tor network.

mSparks··on Ranking TV Shows That Got Canceled
I really wish they'd finished V and Flashforward too. Both could have been signed off in a few episodes and would of added tons of value to the franchises.
mSparks··on Quantum entropy source on an integrated circuit for random number generation
thats isnt how the project was billed.

the first part of the project is quantum encryption. the second is ftl communication https://www.rt.com/news/328988-china-quantum-info-teleport/

The satellite’s first mission would involve establishing a cryptographic communication line between Beijing and Vienna by creating “[the encoding and sharing of a secret cryptographic key using the quantum properties of photons] between a ground station in Beijing and the satellite, and between the satellite and Vienna.”

Scientists then plan to conduct satellite entangled photon quantum teleportation between stations located in the Chinese cities of Delingha and Lijiang or Nanshan, which are separated by more than 1,200 kilometers.

mSparks··on Saturated fats no longer the true enemy, experts say
it was 2007 i first ran into the issue that the conventional wisdom was there is no link between consuming vast quantities of sugar and a bodies inabilty to process sugar, but rather the foods we have always consumed in large quantities.

Its a very strange kind of relief to see the tide turning and a wider body of people beginning to believe they got duped.

I really think the food industry needs to be regulated more like the pharmaceutical industry. production line food should face the same stringent tests that production line simple molecules for human consumption always have done.

mSparks··on Quantum entropy source on an integrated circuit for random number generation
ever since the Chinese published that they can now use entanglent to transmit information faster than light. following it up with that quantum comms satelite recently im not sure what to think anymore.

surely a better answer is "we dont actually know anymore"

https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601658/first-demonstratio...

mSparks··on Quantum entropy source on an integrated circuit for random number generation
An mt requires reading only 400ish numbers to work out its internal state and exactly predict its output thereafter. its also biased, which puts bias into any simulation using it.

one of the best performance hwrngs atm comes in the raspberry pi.

one of the worse is that used by (old versions of)ms excel. which im still not sure if they fixed the high probability of creating extreme values.

if you need performance one of the best algorithmic pseudo rngs is in the rabbit stream cipher.

____ quantum random number generator would scare me. whats to stop the nsa from entangling it with their own hardware and controling its output (only half joking)

mSparks··on Atmospheric carbon dioxide passes 400ppm
Aside from the fact it's a good question.

I'm also upvoting because that "sounds" like maybe you are pessimistic about the significance and need them to recoup the robo downvotes given to anyone not willing to swear the worlds going to end tomorrow. (don't know for sure if they lurk on HN, but for sure they are everywhere else).

mSparks··on The Effect of State Marijuana Legalizations
http://www.amsterdamcannabis.co.uk/amsterdam-coffee-shops/ The general prices range from about €6,- (£5.13) to €11,- (£9.41) for a gram of weed or hash.

->28.3495 grams in an ounce

Prices in the coffee shops range from about €168/$188 to €280/$340 an ounce.

So yeah - gotta agree with that "pretty expensive" in the same way US at $250 an ounce is expensive.

iirc we used to pay around $50 for a half ounce of green (Been a decade or two since I bought any though), or 9 ounces of resin was $325

I was in Egypt a month ago or so and they were trying their luck at $25 a gram.

I wonder how long until wholesale prices pop up in the commodities indices :p

mSparks··on The Effect of State Marijuana Legalizations
it would of been nice is they contrasted the "no rise in serious crime" with the number of drug related arrests.

for me the biggest reason to have gange legal is it frees policing resources up from processing fairly ridiculous prosecutions of people dealing in what is basically just plant material.

so while it is nice to see there is no real impact on "other crime" the fact they missed the impact of freeing up resources directly related to weed is a major ommission.

and also.

god damn you americans pay a lot for it. $250 an ounce. that's ridiculous. like more than three times the price I used to pay as a teenager for prime amsterdam skunk.

mSparks··on How to Crash Systemd in One Command
I've complained a few times that systemd haters havent explained the hate.

having read this post I'd say a slightly less succinct but infinitely more informative version would be

> "Systemd is defective by design because they totally disregard the fail-safe by design rules"

mSparks··on Sale of Kodi ‘fully-loaded’ streaming boxes faces legal test in UK
A bit OT, however, I think it's worth pointing out:

->order to get some protections from government spying.

I suspect the governments who actively make their own citizens vulnerable to spying by other governments probably won't be around that much longer. The kind of incompetence and arrogance that comes with making your citizenship vulnerable to foreign influence to protect the status quo in the name of "national security" has never ever ended well for the status quo.

mSparks··on Sale of Kodi ‘fully-loaded’ streaming boxes faces legal test in UK
define:piracy ˈpʌɪrəsi noun 1. the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea. 2. the unauthorized use or reproduction of another's work.

_____

The UK courts have extended that already to :

3. Providing an index dedicated to people reproducing another's work without authorisation.

As per all the great bookmarks here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_websites_blocked_in_th...

mSparks··on Sale of Kodi ‘fully-loaded’ streaming boxes faces legal test in UK
Only if you are willing to frame "providing a directory of people willing to share 1s and 0s with each other" as equivalent to holding someone up at gun/sword point on the high seas.

Many of my peers have come to the conclusion making such an equivalence is the result of corruption and vested interests in causing damage to society at large.

I think its just the result of total incompetence and sheep like behaviour.

Either way its definitely caused now irreparable damage to what was once considered the worlds best legal system.

And if you don't believe, just ask yourself when the UK legal system last made a decision that people at large considered demonstrated how good a system it is (rather than the exact opposite)

mSparks··on Sale of Kodi ‘fully-loaded’ streaming boxes faces legal test in UK
I'd say he doesn't stand a chance.

UK law has already determined thepiratebay is an illegal site equivalent to selling pirated dvds, and forced isps to block it. judges by and large can barely even turn a computer on let alone comprehend search isn't the same as hosting.

This absolutely isnt because they are mostly corrupt and taken large payments from big media.
